So when does the Afternoon Dredge video insisting this is a desperate stunt cast by Kurtzman to save his job come out?
Though he does do Shakespeare quite wellI misread the title - I thought they are going to draft in Picardo to play Picard.
What did they do to antagonise Stewart I gasped in belief?
Picardo simulating an English accent ain't gonna work was my 2nd thought before I came to my senses.
Revisiting shows from the 90s always results in a revelation that they're fantastic or an equally intense revelation that they're complete shit (Babylon 5), and I'm convinced a modern audience would find most of post-season 2 Voyager to be the former, especially with the amount of meta-fictional episodes they ended up doing.
Quark and Garak would work because they aren't Starleet with enough range you can write them almost new characters. Like with any shows you can do more new things with old characters once you take them out of their old settings. The words, Voyager and Ds9 don't even need to be uttered. JasonAs a massive DS9 fan, I honestly can't think of an organic way they can bring any of them into Picard without it being jarring as fuck outside of Worf and the O'Briens. Seven and The Doctor at least both have a ton of first-hand Borg knowledge (Seven experientially and The Doctor medically) that the rest of the Federation just doesn't have, so they make sense in a Borg-centric story. None of the other Niner characters even met Picard.
Well, Sisko did. But Avery Brooks retired from acting back in 2001 (aside from the occasional stage production) to teach theatre at Rutgers. And he seems the sort of eccentric dude that a) wouldn't see the point in ever returning and b) might be difficult to reign in even if he was somehow wooed back into film & TV acting. The dude marches to the beat of his own drum, and I love him for it. I just don't see a Sisko return working out.

Why does he need to save his job? He was fired years ago when CBS got payroll to stop sending him checks but nobody has informed him so he just keeps showing up making new Trek shows. Despite the fact they took away his favorite stapler and put his desk in the basement. It'll depend on the writing. But after two seasons of Discovery, count me as leery of it coming off as anything more than nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia.
I couldn't give a crap about Discovery anymore to be perfectly honest. Georgiou, the best character from it, is getting her own show and it's likely Pike, Spock and Number One, the best parts of Season 2, will get their own show eventually. The remnants of Discovery mean very little to me but at least its still there for those who enjoy it and now there's also Picard to enjoy. This is a win win situation for all fans unless you hate Discovery, Georgiou, Pike and Picard. In that case, you get Lower Decks and Tarantino Trek. If that doesn't please you then nothing ever will.
I just hope the disco die hards who clearly want picard to fail can stay in their lane and let us enjoy this.
Agree, Discovery failed to hit home for me, Pike and Spock made season 2 sort of ok buy then they left, and in the space of that season the "main cast" did nothing to endear themselves to me.
Look Discovery keeps a certain crowd happy, and that's cool, but this Picard show and other potential projects are what I'm looking forward to, I just hope the disco die hards who clearly want picard to fail can stay in their lane and let us enjoy this.

What? All two of them?I just hope the disco die hards who clearly want picard to fail can stay in their lane and let us enjoy this.
Captain Janeway wouldn't do enough kung-fu kicks to keep modern audiences happy.
Also I'm Caretaker chakotay would need to be dressed down for toxic masculinity

I share your feelings re: Discovery. I thought they knocked it out of the ballpark with the Talosian episode, but then it fell over for me.
I'm also in the "looking forward to everything else" camp. If Discovery can keep a show runner around for an entire season, who knows? They might be able to turn it around. But seriously, is hating on the new Picard series from Discovery fans really a thing, though?
