Robert Picardo to return for Picard

So when does the Afternoon Dredge video insisting this is a desperate stunt cast by Kurtzman to save his job come out?

I misread the title - I thought they are going to draft in Picardo to play Picard.

What did they do to antagonise Stewart I gasped in belief?

Picardo simulating an English accent ain't gonna work was my 2nd thought before I came to my senses.

Though he does do Shakespeare quite well :D

Revisiting shows from the 90s always results in a revelation that they're fantastic or an equally intense revelation that they're complete shit (Babylon 5), and I'm convinced a modern audience would find most of post-season 2 Voyager to be the former, especially with the amount of meta-fictional episodes they ended up doing.

Captain Janeway wouldn't do enough kung-fu kicks to keep modern audiences happy. Also I'm Caretaker chakotay would need to be dressed down for toxic masculinity

I couldn't give a crap about Discovery anymore to be perfectly honest. Georgiou, the best character from it, is getting her own show and it's likely Pike, Spock and Number One, the best parts of Season 2, will get their own show eventually. The remnants of Discovery mean very little to me but at least its still there for those who enjoy it and now there's also Picard to enjoy. This is a win win situation for all fans unless you hate Discovery, Georgiou, Pike and Picard. In that case, you get Lower Decks and Tarantino Trek. If that doesn't please you then nothing ever will.

As a massive DS9 fan, I honestly can't think of an organic way they can bring any of them into Picard without it being jarring as fuck outside of Worf and the O'Briens. Seven and The Doctor at least both have a ton of first-hand Borg knowledge (Seven experientially and The Doctor medically) that the rest of the Federation just doesn't have, so they make sense in a Borg-centric story. None of the other Niner characters even met Picard.

Well, Sisko did. But Avery Brooks retired from acting back in 2001 (aside from the occasional stage production) to teach theatre at Rutgers. And he seems the sort of eccentric dude that a) wouldn't see the point in ever returning and b) might be difficult to reign in even if he was somehow wooed back into film & TV acting. The dude marches to the beat of his own drum, and I love him for it. I just don't see a Sisko return working out.
Quark and Garak would work because they aren't Starleet with enough range you can write them almost new characters. Like with any shows you can do more new things with old characters once you take them out of their old settings. The words, Voyager and Ds9 don't even need to be uttered. Jason

God, my bi ass would kill for an appearance by an openly pansexual Garak.

Why does he need to save his job? He was fired years ago when CBS got payroll to stop sending him checks but nobody has informed him so he just keeps showing up making new Trek shows. Despite the fact they took away his favorite stapler and put his desk in the basement. Jason

Easiest DS9 character to bring over would be Nog. Most logical one would be O’brien due to his previous connection to Picard.

Loved The Doctor. Happy with this news. If they want to cherry pick fan favorites which fit the story, fine by me.

I'm a huge DS9 fan - but I'd rather they left it alone. I don't see it as a snub of DS9, it just doesn't fit.

I'd rather DS9 came back as a limited series OR have a new series kick off after Picard S1 that immerses us in the politics of 24th/25th century Federation again, picking up some of the DS9 story threads there. Dominion War II?

I can't imagine they'd come up with anything to bring Avery out of retirement. I think he's quite content within his own world.

It'll depend on the writing. But after two seasons of Discovery, count me as leery of it coming off as anything more than nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia.

I sincerely hope you're wrong. The show runner seems to have some impressive credentials. I have high hopes for the series, so long as Kurtzman and Goldsman keep a healthy distance from the ... well, the whole thing.

Agree, Discovery failed to hit home for me, Pike and Spock made season 2 sort of ok buy then they left, and in the space of that season the "main cast" did nothing to endear themselves to me.

Look Discovery keeps a certain crowd happy, and that's cool, but this Picard show and other potential projects are what I'm looking forward to, I just hope the disco die hards who clearly want picard to fail can stay in their lane and let us enjoy this.

I share your feelings re: Discovery. I thought they knocked it out of the ballpark with the Talosian episode, but then it fell over for me.

I'm also in the "looking forward to everything else" camp. If Discovery can keep a show runner around for an entire season, who knows? They might be able to turn it around. But seriously, is hating on the new Picard series from Discovery fans really a thing, though?

I don't think you're talking about me, just in general, but since I qualify as a "Disco Diehard", I just want to say, so we're clear, I want Picard to succeed.

Captain Janeway wouldn't do enough kung-fu kicks to keep modern audiences happy.

That’s the same Janeway who slid into a hellhole prison packing a phaser rifle, spouted action hero one-liners like “time to take out the garbage”, faced off with the Borg queen, etc? Not to mention the various other transparent appeals to “modern audiences” with the “hot rod” Delta Flyer, babe in skintight outfit, cool villain, etc.

Also I'm Caretaker chakotay would need to be dressed down for toxic masculinity

Ah, SJWs, etc. Sigh.

I just hope the disco die hards who clearly want picard to fail can stay in their lane and let us enjoy this.

I think you’ll be safe in that regard, given I’ve not seen “Disco die hards” expressing such views.

Most of the negativity I’ve seen about Picard comes from those who dislike Disco, and expect to dislike Picard for the same reasons.

It is

I'm not saying it's every fan but you spend time on here you notice sly digs being made quite a bit.

I'm a shameless Discovery fan, but I'm just as excited about Picard as I was about Disco when it came out. Of course, I've read the assertions that Disco fans will be desperate for Picard to fail as it's obviously going to be a huge success due to being closer to what TrueFansTM actually want, and this will inevitably cause CBS to divert funds from their unsalvageable trainwreck to the new cash cow, eventually leading to Discovery being cancelled... but I've generally seen these from diehard Discovery haters mostly eager and often desperate to see DSC fail and Kurtzman being hurled out of the Tower of Commerce onto the Sacred Marketplace. I've yet to see 'Disco diehards' who'd want Picard to fail... in fact, the only Discovery fan I've met who wasn't excited for Picard was someone for whom Discovery was their first Trek experience and didn't have that emotional connection to the TNG era most of us do; even they conceded the trailer looked promising.

Yes, I might have said negative things myself... about TNG, mainly how bland and formulaic it seems to me in retrospect. But that doesn't mean I don't like what I've seen from PIC so far. I wasn't a huge Voyager fan either, but I still couldn't contain my glee when Seven showed up and I'm just as excited for the possibility of the EMH returning. Him and Seven were my favorite characters on Voyager and I'll be very happy to see them again. Maybe Janeway too, if the winds are kind.
