Robert Picardo to return for Picard

Tempered expectations since it literally says in the article headline that he's in early discussions about an appearance, and in the article that he hasn't actually seen anything concrete about it yet.

It's also weird that he is disclosing it this early, and I wonder if that might reduce his chances for actually appearing in the show at some point. And then there's the cynic in me that wonders if he's talking about it now to generate positive buzz to leverage when it comes to negotiating the contract.

It would really suck if he ended up talking himself out of an appearance. He was fantastic on Voyager, and he's still got it. He kicked ass when he guest starred on The Orville this year.

He did but that episode was super uncomfortable.

He and Billingsley were both great.

Still feel quite wary about bringing back these characters, but if this show succeeds, it might at least persuade people to rewatch Voyager so it can FINALLY GET THE RESPECT IT DESERVES.
I don't know about that. That show is widely hated already, so I'm not sure we need a bunch of new people seeing it and realising how terrible it is.

90% of old school Doctor Who wasn't so hot either. Doesn't invalidate the 10% that legitimately kicks ass.

To me, an appearance by The Doctor (not that time travel one) and Robert Picardo - makes sense if Seven becomes a more important character. He was the one who designed the implant and encouraged her humanity. He could work his magic with other ex-drones, and help "the cause".

Without Seven, there is little place for his character as I see it now.

Unless Picard is having some medical issues which only The Doctor could help with. We could have Picard collapsing in the finale, and Seven brings The Doctor to help in the Season 2 premiere.

So, there's a possibility of a second character from Voyager showing up but no one from DS9? Not even Worf or O'Brien, who at least have a TNG connection?

I've said before and I'll say again- some nice Voy fan service going on with Picard. But where is there any DS9 representation? That show had fans too.

The co-creator of Picard, Kristen Beyer, is a Voyager novelist so she would naturally think of VOY characters. I am sure DS9 has some fans on the writing staff too, including Beyer, so there will be eventual representation. I am hoping DS9 itself will make an appearance, though probably too expensive so not likely.

This is fantastic news. Personally i found him to be the best doctor in all of Trek. Shows great willingness behind the scenes for future cameos from past Trek Stars. Mabye Kate and some case from DS9.

My three take-aways from that:
  1. Fucking 2nd season! :D Hope the first one will be so good they don't need to do some major adjustments.
  2. I really love how that turns into a "continuation the the TNG era", not a "Continuation to TNG"
  3. I really would absolutely love to see Robert Picardo again!

Me personally, bring on the fan service, I've got plenty of other Sci fi I can watch if I want something "different from star trek". I don't need Star Trek to be "different from star trek"

Fully agreed. If it were their "new ship, new crew, new stand-alone series", I wouldn't like that many guest appereances that early on. But that's what DIS is currently failing to be.

This series specifically started out as a sequel to the Picard character. Including other popular characters from that era in guest spots is the damn right thing to do.

A lot of the Discovery die hards are so threatened by Picard it's unreal, so many heckles are up.

This has to be the weirdest part for me. Especially since it's often the same people that continuously tell me "to keep an open mind" about DIS, or the Mirror universe cannibal genocidal fascist S31 spy show. Even though we can much better assess how they will turn out since they have been on screen already the last seasons.

In all seriousness I don't know what their problem with Picard is, the show to me looks like it has something for both us "old school" fans and the new discovery fans too.

A compromise between classic trek and trump generation trek.

Just because they haven't said anything doesn't mean they weren't contacted.

Patrick has said other people might show up.

Revisiting shows from the 90s always results in a revelation that they're fantastic or an equally intense revelation that they're complete shit (Babylon 5), and I'm convinced a modern audience would find most of post-season 2 Voyager to be the former, especially with the amount of meta-fictional episodes they ended up doing.

JJ Abrams deleted all of my DVDs back in 2009. ;)
Ah, you were part of the first Purge :D

Yeah, I've tried to get back in to VOY. Can't get past the second episode.

Thanks to Picardo we know they're already beginning the casting process for Season 2. I'm sure we'll see at least one or two more names pop up in the coming months. And if Beyer & Chabon ultimately decide that they need 30 episodes to tell the story instead of 20, there will be at least a couple more still. This is a 20-30 hour epic that's still filming hours 1-10. There's plenty of time for more Next Gen faves to join the party.
