Robert Beltran (Chakotay) is back for Star Trek: Prodigy

I have it! Captain Chakotay will be the recurring character throughout the series and we will be teased with hearing about Voyager. He'll arrive on the Delta Flyer. Then in the finale when the Holo-Janeway goes offline and the kids feel hopeless and are about to die, Chakotay will arrive at the last second as captain of Voyager with the whole Full Circle Fleet (including a Merian-Class USS Curie) and present Admiral Janeway. She'll give an inspirational speech to the children, that it was never the hologram of Janeway...it was the hologram of their hearts that led the way. The standard fanservice ending and it will be marvelous.

I haven't seen much Red Dwarf. I thought the original crew were all dead except for Lister.

Here's what I think will happen:

It turns out that Starfleet intentionally planted the Protostar in the Delta Quadrant and will be monitoring the ship closely throughout the entire run of this show, to see what the kids do with it. Chakotay, as captain of Voyager, will be heading the operation, but will only reveal himself and the ship at the last minute.

Assuming the kids pass the test. ;)

Good for me, I need to cut down on my tv viewing anyway.

Or if the Protostar will get involved in the conflict between Talax and the Haakonian Order. That's a huge thread that VOY just left hanging.

It really depends on WHERE in the D.Q. the series will take place... and whether or not the Protostar is using an experimental drive (such as say Quantum Slipstream, Transwarp or enhanced Warp drive [like the one created by VOY silver blood copies]) to get there in a small amount of time (such as say a few weeks or months) as opposed to years or decades.

There are several factors at play here... but I agree that depending on the Protostar's location in the D.Q. it could pick up on VOY's previously touched upon but never fully explored subjects.

At any rate... if Chakotay will be back as Captain and in a recurring capacity... that would probably preclude the possibility of him being a flesh and blood person - as I doubt he would go back to the D.Q. (via whatever means), encounter the Protostar and then just leave it to return periodically.

That would be an interesting twist. Usually, it was other alien species doing this to 'test' the UFP... but now it would be a reversal (only on a quarter of the galaxy).
Still, how would they have known the ship would end up in the kids hands to begin with? How could they ensure the sequence of events which would get the kids to escape and find the Protostar?
While I don't doubt UFP/SF could probably pull off something like that... it doesn't seem very prudent. Furthermore, SF wouldn't be so callous as to just leave and experimental ship in the middle of the D.Q. with all its technology to find (and potentially abuse).

I'm sure they could control the Protostar by remote. If hostiles had gotten ahold of it, Starfleet could have set a self-destruct or something like that.

As for why Starfleet would do something like this? Now that there's real-time communication between the Alpha and Delta quadrants, perhaps they had gotten ahold of some intelligence regarding the kids who would eventually find the ship. If Starfleet knew who they were ahead of time, they could have arranged for the Protostar to be found by them.
