RMS Enterprise--1912

Inspired by The JUNE Writer’s challenge

(This is a limited mini-series. I liked Cejay’s challenge so much I just had to do a mini-series; meaning it will no doubt be too long to compete for the challenge, but will be fun to do no-less)

Several rows of cars lined the interior of the ship’s main storage area. There were various makes, including three or four from the current year; 1912. The sound of a young woman losing her virginity came from one of the cars, its window steamed over because of the romantic interlude taking place inside of it. The gentle rocking of the brand new car, a 1912 Rolls Royce, was more evidence that the act of making love was taking place in the backseat of the car.

(Flash back begins)

Young Jimmy Kirk was nineteen years old. Not one day of his life had been spent in school, not one day at all. And when his parents were killed in a fire, when he was eleven years old, he was forced to find a way to survive and did so by working with his uncle on the docks. Loading and offloading of cargo had made him very strong and very streetwise as well. Yet, somehow, he had maintained a youthful and very contagious charm. This was a plus for him, he found, when it came to romancing women, or attracting the better looking whores that caroused the docks. Though he longed for a more long lasting relationship with a woman, he would never be able to settle down with one. It was a lonely existence, but it had its benefits as well.

The rough lifestyle he lived had taken him to most parts of the world in just seven short years. When Jimmy was fourteen years old his uncle was lost at sea, leaving young Jimmy with out any other living relative. Jimmy was truly on his own.

Although he loved working the docks at the various harbors through-out England, he had longed to go home. And so it was one fateful day he saw her for the first time; the RMS Enterprise.

She had just been commissioned, and was rumored to be the finest luxury vessel ever built. Not only that, the fine vessel was set to take its maiden voyage to New York, and to challenge the current speed record for just such a voyage. The record had only been set three months earlier by the HMS Lexington, commanded by one of the world’s most respected commanding officers; Robert Wesely.

The HMS Titanic was captained by almost an equally respected captain as well; Jean-Luc Picard. Though Picard was French, he was highly respected in England for his exploits during his naval and career as a luxury liner Captain.

With a run of luck at a random poker game on the docks, Jimmy found him self in possession of a second class ticket, and was set to board the Enterprise. While boarding the vessel, on the small ramp that the second class passengers, used lighting struck for the second time that day. Not only had he won passage aboard the vessel, he also caught the eye of a very rich and beautiful woman, barely his age if that, as she boarded the Enterprise on the first class ramp, with her servants in tow. When their eyes met, Jimmy knew that he had found the love of his life.

“Oh, don’t mind that one laddy,” the Scottish accent of one of the other second class roughnecks warned as he too eyed her, “she is engaged to that man o’er there.” The rough neck pointed to a very elegant looking man who followed behind her three servants as they carried her bags aboard.

“Who is she, and who is he?” Jimmy asked the roughneck.

“Don’t ye read the paparrrs?” the roughneck said with a laugh. “His name is Christoph’a Pike. His family is well vested in oil and word has it he is a millionaire several times o’er. I’d like to see inside of his wallet, if you know what I mean lad.”

Jimmy Kirk listened to the Scottish man talk about Pike, but not once did Jimmy Kirk allow his eyes to leave their target; the woman. Though their mutual glance had been broken by her having to move up the ramp, he was quite sure she felt something for him as well in those few short seconds.

“So, who is she then, mister…?” Jimmy searched his memory for the Scotsman’s name realizing finally he didn’t know it.

“Oh, you can call me Scotty.” Scotty said as they both shook hands.

Jimmy returned his gaze the woman as she was nearly about to disappear into the bowels of the ship.

“Ahhhh, yes, she is fine mare isn’t she?” Scotty said. “Her name is Edith Keeler. Her father, Francis Keeler, is a world famous maker of fine wines. No doubt Keeler is looking for more investment in his company and so is marrying his daughter out to the most available bachelor he could find.”

“That is so cruel,” Jimmy said, “treating women like they are nothing but cattle to be sold to the highest bidder.”

“Perhaps,” Scotty said, “but such the world that we live in.”

Jimmy nodded in agreement. He knew that he would not let one passing of the sun go by until he met the beautiful woman named; Edith Keeler.

But, as fate usually proves, the whims of a young man’s heart do not drive the universe. Most of the first day at sea had young Jim Kirk offering to help total strangers find their way on the massive ship.

Many of the passengers heading to America were doing so to escape the eventual war that was coming Europe. Thus, there were many families with young children aboard the ship. They were not there for the majesty of the voyage; they were there for simple passage. So with a good heart on his shoulder, Jimmy spent most the day helping the families by carrying their luggage. He also helped several of the older passengers as well. Their feeble legs unwilling, at times, to carry them up or down the ladder wells meant Jimmy had to use his legs to lift, or help pull up, several passengers in his matter.

While he was volunteering to do these good deeds, he couldn’t keep his mind off the woman who had captured his heart with just a simple glance. As the first night came, young Jimmy found himself crammed in a room with three other second class passengers; three Japanese brothers who were a traveling acrobatic team that toured circuses and carnivals through-out the world. The oldest of the three Japanese brothers was named Hikaru Sulu. Jimmy Kirk was surprised to find that Mr. Sulu, as he liked to be called, spoke fluent English.

Jimmy Kirk, and his three roommates, shared two bunk beds. Jimmy was on the top of the second bunk, and was about to lean over so he could talk with Mr. Sulu. But first Jimmy took a quick glance out the small port hold. The stars were glistening above. He wondered how it would have been, centuries ago, to only have the stars to guide a vessel on its trek through the ocean. He leaned down to converse with Mr. Sulu.

“So where are you headed now?” Jimmy asked, totally enthralled with these new friends. They pretty much lived the same vagabond existence he did.

“Back home to San Francisco.” Mr. Sulu said. “We were born there.”

Jimmy looked at this young man closer. “Just how old are you?”

Sulu replied quickly. “I am twenty-six, my two younger brothers, twins, are nineteen.”

Jimmy was not the brightest person in the world, but he wasn’t a spring chicken either. “No way, you can’t be more than fifteen.”

Sulu looked directly at Jimmy. “I am twenty-six, they nineteen. That is what it says on our papers, so it must be true.”

Jimmy nodded in acknowledgement of the dual meaning. Sulu’s age, and that of his brothers, was not open to discussion.

“I love Frisco,” Jimmy said as he returned to laying back on his pillow, changing the subject, “somehow I think, even after the quake, it is destined to be a great city of the future.”

“I think you dream too much.” Sulu quipped.

“Yes,” Jimmy agreed, “I do dream. But I also do my best to make those dreams come true.”

“Hard work is the only way to make your dreams come true.” Sulu agreed. “My brothers and I found out the hard way that it isn’t easy for all of us.”

“True,” Jimmy agreed as he looked up at the steam pipe that ran through their room, only barely two feet from his face. “My dream for tomorrow is to meet the most beautiful girl in the world, and kiss her. What do you say about that dream?”

The only answer Jimmy Kirk got was the sound of Sulu’s snoring. But it didn’t matter, Jimmy thought to himself. Sulu was right about one thing; it would be hard work to make this dream come true. Getting access to the First-class decks would be no small fete. But Jimmy Kirk would not let any blockade of guards to hold him back. Young true love would find a way.

--

WHACK!

Edith Keeler fell back onto the bed. She looked up with total fear at the man who had smacked her face with the back of his hand; Christopher Pike. He dress had been torn seconds before; a victim of Pike’s drunken raged.

“You whore!” He said to her while he held a bottle of liquor. The room stunk of his sweat and his whisky tainted breath. He wore slacks but no shirt and began to take off his belt.

“What are you doing?” She demanded.

He flashed a devious grin as he slowly pulled the belt through the small hoops of his slacks. “I paid your father handsomely for your hand, and this is what I get?! I get a woman who will not have sex until we are wed!?”

She clung to her bare breast, her dress already having been ripped open by Christopher. “I’m a virgin and will stay that way until we are wed!” She shot back.

He finally had the belt in his hand. He swung it at her, barely missing her. “No, you will give me what is rightfully mine; now! Or by God, I will make you feel my wrath!”

“My father would have never let you marry me if he knew you were like this!” She spat back. “You are nothing but a drunken bastard!”

He smiled, and nodded in agreement. “I am drunk,” he said as he raised the belt. He laughed as he brought it down with full force, striking her in the process.

--

Captain Jean-luc Picard was preparing to turn in for the night. He made one last stop at the radio control room. It was manned by a woman named Uhura. It was rare, very rare, for an African, no less an African woman, to be employed as such, but Picard had been impressed with her easy use of the new maritime codes. She had studied abroad and was a very elegant woman. She had caught Picard’s eye two years hence while his last vessel, an old freighter called Stargazer, was moored for repairs in a shipyard in Tripoli.

“Have there been any updates about iceberg conditions?” Picard asked her.

She shook her head. “Strangely, not as much as you’d think we’d get.” She told him. “The weather has been quite warm in the past few months, so one would think there might be more icebergs than usual this far south.”

Picard nodded. “I agree.” He sipped on the mug of coffee he held in his right hand. “Let me know if you get any updates. I’m turning in for the night.”

“Good night sir.” Uhura said with a soft smile.

--

The RMS Enterprise wasn’t the only vessel in those waters. Unknown to Picard, and his crew, a German U19 sub shadowed the massive luxury liner.

The brave bridge crew of the U19 submarine stood silent as their Captain, Klaus Van Trapp kept his face tight upon the scope. Vande Trapp puffed on a cigar as he surveyed the Enterprise from afar. Though his last name was Van Trapp, he preferred to be called by his given nickname; Chang. Sometimes a torpedo would scrape the bottom of a boat before blowing it up. The sound was something like CHAAAAAANG...CHAAAAANG. That is how he got his nickname. Captain Chang had sunk tweny-seven vessels in his naval career. But none as large, and none quite the prize, of the RMS Enterprise.

"Captain Chang," first officer Zeunhausen Delanci asked, "is it time?"

Chang exhaled cigar smoke from his nose, then spoke back to Delanci. "No," he said softy, "we shall let them fatten up on their food for one more day. Then, and only then, we shall strike a blow for the fatherland! I have it on great faith that the iceberg and thus I will clothe my naked villany."

Indeed, It was time to strike fear in the hearts of the British, with this new type of submarine. And with American fast becoming a naval threat, it was time to strike fear in their hearts as well. However, the time to sink the liner had not come; just yet.

A nice alternate universe take on the characters setting them in the Edwardian era on the Titanic. Sweet.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure if this is what Cejay meant by the challenge, but it is fun plugging in our trek characters into another established franchise and seeing where it goes...and we all know the tragic ending of Titanic and Kirk/Edith Keeler. So even though I am contrained to follow that evenutal ending, the journy of getting there is very rewarding, and suprisingly inspiring

A bright blue sky, and a calm sea, greeted the RMS Enterprise on her second day at sea. The passengers were enjoying their time on the fast and sleek vessel.

On the First-Class deck there were high-priced lounging chairs assembled on the various observation decks for the passengers to use. Fine wines, and various cheese plates, were available for them to nibble on as enjoyed conversation. There were binocular stands that they could also use to view the beautiful surroundings the ship found its self traveling among; for a modest sum of course.

Even the Second-class citizens were having a relaxing day. Unlike the First-class decks, which were dotted with an occasional passenger here and there, the recreation decks of the Second-class were jammed pack with families and other passengers fleeing from the cramped quarters below.

Plates of bread rolls, which only held crumbs by this part of the day, were strewn all over the deck areas; as were cheap paper cups used for water. The lack of A+ service was a small exchange for a hoped voyage to freedom in the United States of America.

Jimmy Kirk was waiting to play handball with a gathered rogue of young men and boys. Jimmy was sitting on the ground, his back against the stiff bulkhead of the ship, enjoying the sun, when, at last, he saw her again.

Edith Keeler could be seen looking out at the ocean before them, with Christopher Pike by her side. Pike was point at something in the sea of interest. Jimmy was squinting his eyes when, suddenly, an old style hand held telescope was presented to him by his roughneck friend; Scotty.

“Where’d you get this?” Jimmy asked.

“Oh,” Scotty said, “me father gave’em to me eh long time ago. I figured you might be a needin’ them.”

“It’s your turn, fatso,” a voice said to Scotty, waiting for him to join in a game of handball.

Scotty patted Jimmy on the shoulder and headed off to play the game.

Jimmy aimed the telescope at where Edith and her fiancé, Christopher Pike, stood on the First-class observation deck. As he looked at Edith, a look of anger came over Jimmy’s face. He could see a small bruise on one of her cheeks, no doubt the result of being struck in the face. He could also see a very vacant look in her eyes as she faked a smile for her soon to be husband. Jimmy Kirk knew right there and then that she was not marrying for love at all, just as Scotty had suggested.

Then, with out warning, her eyes shifted and she was looking straight at Jimmy.

--

Christopher Pike followed the gaze of his bride to be. A young man could be seen on the Second-class deck looking up at them with a hand-held telescope.

“Do you know that boy?” Pike asked.

“No, I do not.” She answered. “Maybe he recognizes you from the papers.”

Pike nodded in agreement. “Perhaps you are right. Sometimes I hate having all this wealth.”

“Then perhaps you should give more of it to those who need help with their lives.” She suggested.

“That is why, my dear,” Pike said softly “your only concern will be to bare children for me, and see to the running of our home. Cluttering a woman’s mind with matters such as wealth or politics is far too demanding.” Pike told her as he sipped the glass of wine in his hand.

Christopher took her by the hand and led her away. He looked one more time at the young man below, who had now lowered his hand-held telescope, no doubt after losing target of what he was really looking at; Edith. Pike glared down at Jimmy Kirk, knowing full well that they were making eye contact with each other. Pike flashed a fiendish smile, and then walked off with his wife, far from the gazing eyes of Kirk.

Scotty had rejoined Jimmy, after only lasting a short time in the game of handball.

“I don’t suppose he’ll be inviting you to dinn’a tonight.” Scotty said with a chuckle.

Jim Kirk was formulating a plan in his mind. He had to find a way to save her from Pike’s clutches. A man like Pike would not only steel her beauty, but her spirit as well.

“Yer dreamin’ if ye think you can keep him from havin’ her.” Scotty said, as though he could read Jimmy Kirk’s mind.

“You’ve got to help me get up to that deck.” Kirk said to Scotty. “Can you help me engineer some kind of plan? You seem like a crafty sort of fella.” Kirk added.

“Are ye daft?” Scotty asked. “If ye get caught up there, ye’d be tossed into the brig, or worse.”

“Love can make a man do crazy things.” Jimmy replied with a broad smile.

“Aye,” Scotty said under his breath, “It can indeed.” He patted Jimmy on the shoulder. “I’ll help’ya.”

--
Later, as the night sky darkened, Jimmy Kirk found himself atop the bunk bed again. The steam pipe, with small beads of water, was there as if a constant companion.

“So,” Mister Sulu’s face said from below, on the lower bunk, “are you any closer to finding your dream white boy?”

Jimmy leaned down and looked at the young boy, who could be no older than fifteen, though he said his age was much older.

“Yes,” Jimmy said to him, “I think I am. I have not a doubt in my mind that tomorrow I will see my dream come true.”

“Did your crazy dream of meeting this young woman come true today?” Sulu asked with a doubtful grin on his face.

“No, I didn’t meet her.” Jimmy admitted. “Our eyes met though. And sometimes that’s all a fella needs to keep a dream alive.”

Sulu chuckled. “Go to sleep,” Sulu said to Jimmy, “that is about the only chance you have of finding a dream.”

Jimmy stretched out in his bunk and prepared to sleep. For now, as Sulu had said, all he had to show for his dream was another night of dreaming. Oh well, Jimmy thought. What a nice second prize that was.

--

The German sub stalked the RMS Enterprise from a close distance, but not to close to be seen by any of the iceberg watches that were surely posted.

Captain Chang walked the bridge, preparing to turn in for the night himself. First officer
Holger Ludwig met him with a report.

“Sir, there could be a heavy cloak of iceberg activity tomorrow night.” Ludwig said. “We are ordered back to our original patrolling area for further orders.”

Captain Chang shook his head. “No,” he said to Ludwig, “we shall shadow this vessel for one more night as well. Then we shall sink her, and strike fear into the fatherland’s enemies.”

“You will be violating orders.” Ludwig said in reply. “You could start a war with the British or the Americans, or both!” Ludwig said in a cautionary tone.

“You have your orders Mr. Ludwig.” Chang said to him. “And If I have to repeat them again, you might be counted as the first enemy casualty in that war.”

Ludwig gave him a terse look, saluted, and returned to his post.

The other officers who had heard the exchange went about their various duties as though nothing had happened. There was the undeniable smell of mutiny in the air.

“Fate”

On the third day of the voyage of the RMS Enterprise, as the ship was bathed in sunshine, Jimmy Kirk and his new friend, Scotty, were playing a game of cards on an isolated area on the port side of the ship. Well, it would be better to say that they appeared to be playing a game of cards. As they were playing they were engaged in conversation far from the realm of card play.

Scotty spoke. “Ever’day thee the laundry is to that chute o’er there. I know this because down a bit furth’a is a bathroom that hardly any one uses. So when I got to plant a long stinkeee log that is where I go. Anyway, the laundry is sorted into those three chutes by two Chinese work’as.”

Kirk nodded as Scotty spoke. “Okay, so what does that have to do with me?”

Scotty shook his head. “Jimmy o’boy, can’t ye se it? The top of the cart will be nearly seven feet from the same chute area one level up.”

Kirk raised his view up one deck; the secured deck. “That hardly gives me enough room to climb.”

“It will require ya to jump up, grab the upper deck, and then do one hell’ov’a pull up to get to next level.” Scotty admitted. “But I have found the love gives a man added strength he never knew he had.”

“But I can’t walk around that upper level in these clothes.” Jimmy said. “I’ll stand out like a sore thumb.”

Scotty reached over and whacked Jimmy on the head.

“What the hell are you doing?” Jimmy asked as his head snapped back.

“Do ya got any brains man?” Scotty asked with a smile. “There be a chute up on that level too. If it be anything like ours, some of the clothes will get stuck until later when more clothes are added. All you gotta do is hope there are some clothes you can use that are still stuck in the chute.”

Jimmy’s scowl, after having his head whacked, slowly turned into a grin. He nodded in approval.

“Not bad.” Jimmy said. “Not bad at all.” He lit him self a cigarette. “So, when do they usually do the laundry?” Jimmy asked.

“Not too long from now, I supposed.” Scotty said as Jimmy offered him a cigarette as well.

Jimmy surveyed the climb again. It would indeed, as Scotty put it, require one heck of a pull up. But that would not deter Jimmy Kirk from scaling the wall.

Moments later, just like clock work, two Chinese workers, dressed in all white outfits, came down the walkway with their laundry cart. They opened the chutes and began to pile in the laundry.

“How do I get pass them?” Jimmy whispered.

Scotty smiled. “Leave’ em to me, will ya?” Scotty replied.

The portly Scottish man stood up and innocently walked over to where the two young Chinese men were working. He then pretended to be drunk, and started helping the two workers by throwing laundry into the chute with them. The chute became crammed with clothes so Scotty began shoving down on the clothes, even jumping in, using the mass of his ass to squish them down even more.

“We no need help with work!” One of the workers said in broken English.

“You want me to work harder?!” Scotty yelled back, pretending not to comprehend what the Chinese man had said. “Shit man, I’m given it all she’s got!” Scott added as he threw all of his weight against the mass of clothes.

Suddenly, and with out any warning, Scotty pretended to lose his balance and he fell over the two workers, knocking all three to the floor. Jimmy Kirk flicked his cigarette butt over the railing. This was his opening.

In one fluid motion Jimmy ran over to the car, and leaped up to the top rung where the remaining clothes waited to be put in the chute, and with all his might he flung himself into the sky, barely landing his two hands on the walkway one level up. With all his might Jimmy Kirk pulled himself up, and on to the next level. He took one last look down, and saw Scotty trying his best to wrestle the two Chinese men, trying to keep them on the ground while pretending to try and stand up. Scotty looked up to Kirk and gave him a thumbs-up. Jimmy Kirk smiled back.

As he could hear the ruckus below, young Kirk opened the laundry chute on his level. Sure enough, just as Scotty had predicted, there were clothes. And being that there were not as many First Class passengers as Second Class passengers, there were not as many clothe items. He found a pair of slacks and shirt that fit him close enough. He stripped out of his own clothes, and in his nakedness, he tossed them over the railing, knowing they would land near the pile of clothes on the lower level.

He put the stolen clothes on and hurried down the walkway, not wanting to linger around the commotion below any longer.

Jimmy Kirk soon found him self fitting in quite well. His young, strong looks, brought approving glances from some of the women, and even some of the men, he greeted. He engaged in small talk with a few of them as well, but never forgetting why he had come this far. He had to be careful. If Christopher Pike saw him, and recognized him, the gig would be over.

Near the forward section of the boat several passengers were tbeing shown the sights by the ship’s Captain; Jean-Luc Picard. Jimmy had seen Picard’s photograph in the papers all through-out England. He was a celebrity, just as much as Bob Wesely, the man who held the speed record that the RMS Enterprise was attempting to break.

And, sure enough, at the front of the pack of First Class Passengers, were Pike and the lovely Edith Keeler. Jimmy tried to look at her while not trying to be obvious. But apparently he had failed.

“You may want to be a bit more careful at who you look at.” A voice said to the right of Jimmy Kirk.

The man was very tall, at least six feet seven inches. He wore old style clothes made from Native American cloth. He was a mountain man. No doubt one of the last of his kind. Jimmy Kirk watched as the older man, easily in his late fifties or sixties, lit a pipe and started puffing on it.

Jimmy Kirk reached his hand. “James Kirk;” then he added, “the third,” Trying to sound wealthy.

The other man smiled, seeing right through Jimmy’s lie. He offered his hand, and it was very strong as they shook. “Mathew Weer.” Mathew Weer said. “I don’t suppose you want to tell me why you are up on this level?”

Jimmy Kirk tried to pass it off, but he knew this man could read him. Then he looked back over at Edith, who was taking with Picard at the time. “Because, Mr. Weer, I need to meet that woman.”

Mathew Weer puffed on his pipe, and then he gave Jimmy Kirk some advice. “You never want to lose your chance at true love.” Mathew said. “I had it once, and then I let slip through my fingers, and never got another chance.”

“Why not?” Jimmy asked.

Mathew pointed at the icebergs in the distance. “See those icebergs out there. There have to be at least, oh, fifteen of them, if not more. But they are scattered upon the ocean as if they are trying to keep to themselves. In actuality the water, and the currents, are keeping them almost equally spread apart. Love is like that boy,” Mathew said, “and our pride is the ocean.”

Jimmy Kirk nodded. “Meaning you got hurt in the past. And have chosen not to let it happen again.”

“And it was a very costly mistake, Mr. Kirk, giving up on love.” Mathew said. “I have been to every continent in this world, and I have seen many wonders. But there is nothing more fulfilling for a man to find than the promise of true love.”

“Even if that risk means being thrown in the brig, and never meeting her?” Jimmy asked.

“There is no better kind of love than the one you risk your life for.” Mathew offered to Jimmy. Mathew reached into his pocket and took out special voucher; a piece of paper with fancy writing on it.

“What is that?” Jimmy asked.

Mathew smiled as he spoke low, so that no one else could hear. “I have had the fortune, and misfortune, to dine with the both of them the past two nights. We are table mates. She is a lovely young woman, there is no denying that. But I can tell looking into his eyes that he is not worth the scum on the bottom of my shoe.” Mathew said. “However, as it turns out, Mr. Pike has been trying to shoehorn me into a game of poker with a few other men folk. I will see to it that the game lasts into the dinner hour. I will leave word to expect my young nephew, you, will eat in my place.”

Jimmy Kirk smiled at Mathew Weer. “Why are you doing this for me?” Jimmy Kirk asked.

“You have the hands of a hard worker,” Mathew said, pointing at the calluses on Jimmy’s hands, “and a dock worker no doubt. I worked the docks when I was about your age, so I know the marks well. You deserve this chance, and,” Mathew added with a devious smile, “I am going to plant a card in Mr. Pikes jacket. I’m going to ‘find’ it and then accuse him of cheating me. And then I’m going to introduce him to my fist.”

Jimmy almost wanted to laugh, but held back. “Why go through all of that? Why do you want to hit him?” Jimmy asked.

Mathew’s demeanor changed to one of being real serious. “Anyone who would strike a woman is the lowest of lows.”

Jimmy Kirk nodded in understanding. They both knew that Pike had struck Edith, and Karma was about to strike him back; hard.

“Dinner starts in about one hour.” Mathew said as he prepared to leave for the poker game. “Don’t be late, and,” Mathew said, “give her a kiss for me.” He said with a gleam in his eyes.

Mathew Weer walked out of view. Jimmy switched his gaze pack to Picard as he concluded his tour of the forward part of the ship. Jimmy Kirk would do his best to stay out of sight until dinner was served. Fate had given him a card to play; a voucher to sit next to Edith Keeler. He could only hope the deck fate was dealing from had more than one card left.

Jimmy Kirk entered the main dining area and was amazed at the display of wealth before his eyes. Women in elegant dresses, with diamond jewelry adorning their necks, wrists, and ears, were everywhere. Some of the older women were more conservative with what they wore, but the younger ones, many of whom were trophy prizes for their much older husbands, reveled in their beauty.

And being of good looks himself, Jimmy found many of the women stealing glances as he strode into the dining area, wearing the fine tuxedo he came into possession of earlier in the day. He was also fortunate to have found a wad of cash in one of the pockets of his stolen attire. More than enough to get the out fit pressed in time for the dinner hour.

There was a very festive mood in the air, and the noise level was very high as hundreds of conversations were echoed through out the dining hall. Jimmy made his way to the dining table he was assigned to, and as he approached the table, he saw her; Edith Keeler.

She was very beautiful in her gown, and yet her face betrayed that of sadness. It was very clear that she had no love for the man she was to marry. There was no sign of Mr. Pike, and Jimmy knew why. Pike was involved in a game of poker in the lower decks, and would, before the night was through, be sporting a very sore nose as well.

He walked up to her slowly, and as he did, he could feel his heart beating. She looked up as he approached, and then she smiled. Jimmy could feel his heart skip three or four beats at the sight of her gazing into his eyes. She stood up to greet him.

“Hello there, my name is James T Kirk.” He told her as he took her hand and planted an innocent kiss on it.

She curtsied and smiled back. “My name is Edith Keeler. If I may be so bold, Mr. Kirk, how is it you are even here?” She knew he didn’t belong on this part of the ship. And he knew she knew.

“I guess you could say I won the lottery.” He said with a warm smile. “Would you like to dance Miss Keeler?” He asked her.

Her expression turned serious. “Oh, I can’t” She told him. “I am engaged, and my husband is due here any moment.”

Jimmy smiled. “Many of the women on that dance floor are dancing with other men. It is very innocent, and besides,” Jimmy as he looked around the room, “I see no sign of your fiancé. And I would be remiss if I didn’t entertain you in his stead.”

She thought for a moment. “Very well,” she told him. “I guess I can have one dance.”

He took her by the hand and led her to the dance floor. As they walked toward the music, the crowd of elegant people seemed to part like the red sea for them. And as they reached the dancing area, the music changed to one of the more romantic pieces of the day; Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody On Theme Of Paganini.

As the two young strangers danced, it was clear to all those who were drawn to watch them, they were fast becoming two young lovers. Most had already been introduced to her as she had made the rounds with her soon to be husband, who was conveniently missing. But no one said a word of protest, no one. It was clear that, for at least this moment, these two dancers, these two who were most obviously in love, were lost on the dance floor; somewhere in time.

Jimmy gazed into Edith’s eyes, and knew that she was as special as the first star in the night sky. There was a spirit inside of her that called to him in ways that none had before. He wanted so much to kiss her lips with his, but he could not. It would not be appropriate to do so; at least for the moment.

As Edith was lost in Jimmy’s eyes, she too could feel something special in this young man who held her in his arms. He had a soul that was full of spirit, yet a calm nature that was very much like that of someone who yearned to explore life for all that it was and would take chances to do so. She wanted him to take her into his arms, lay her down on a bed of pedals, and make love to her in all the ways a man could. She could feel her face blush as she had such thoughts. If only their lips could touch.

An hour’s time had passed since the dance had ended. The main course of the dinner was being served, and Jimmy Kirk found himself sitting next to Edith, who was to his left, and the Captain of the Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard who sat to his right at the head of the table.

There were six others at the table as well. Sitting to the right of Picard was his beautiful date, Eline. Her beauty was very innocent, and her charm was very infectious. To Eline’s right were Mr. and Mrs. Jack and Beverly Crusher, and next to them their young son Wesley.

The young crusher was, at best, eleven years old and was very smart for his age. Jimmy and the others listened as the young boy talked about the newer generation of flying air planes. Jimmy Kirk had the strangest feeling that there was something more to the relationship between Picard and Mrs. Crusher. And as Wesley talked on and on about air-flight, Jimmy Kirk realized what it was.

As the various people at the table conversed, Jimmy was able to hold his own with them. Blending in real stories of his own life, with fakes one about his ‘uncle’ Zeb. But he hated when he had to speak, because it meant less time to share words and thoughts with Edith.

Captain Picard was enjoying a glass of wine when the first officer, Wil Riker, came up to him and whispered something into his ear. Picard excused himself and the dinner party went on.

--

Christopher Pike entered his quarters and hurried over to the sink. Blood came from his nose, thanks to the strong fist of Zeb Macahan. Pike, broken and battered before the other players at the poker game, swore he would get revenge on Macahan someday. Macahan told him he would be waiting.

Now, in his private room he shared with his fiancé, Edith, Pike searched for his Tuxedo and put it on as fast as he could. He was still very angry, and for him, anger always manifested itself into the urge to take a woman, any woman he could pay for, or now that he was engaged, have for free.

He would find his fiancé, Edith, and excuse her from the dinner and bring her back to the room so that he could ravish her with his anger. He had taken her the night before by force and now he wanted to take her again, but from behind, with even more anger than before. And if she protested, which he hoped she did, he would gag her if need be and use the back of his hand to force her to his will. No one would stop him, no one at all.

--
Captain Picard hurried to the Bridge.

“We think we can pilot through the icebergs,” Riker said, “but I thought you’d want to take a look for yourself.”

“Oh yes,” Picard told Riker, “quite right to have come and gotten me Number one.” Picard said.

The moment Picard came on to the bridge he was handed a very sensitive hand held telescope. Not only were there icebergs ahead, the fog was getting deeper.

“What do you think?” Riker asked.

Picard looked to Riker as he handed him the eye piece. “Contact engineer Leforge,” Picard said to Riker, “and tell him to reduce speed by one third.”

Riker cocked an eyebrow, “Only by one third sir?” Riker asked.

Picard nodded. “If you’re half the man I think you are,” Picard said, “you should be able to navigate the bridge crew through at that speed. I don’t want to lose any more time than I have to. We are trying to break Bob Wesley’s record you know.”

Riker nodded slowly. “Yes sir,” Riker told Picard, “we will do as you command.”

Picard headed off the bridge and back toward the party, leaving Riker in command of the bridge. Riker used the eye piece to scan ahead again. Lt. Spiner walked over to him.

“Sir,” Spiner said, “is he trying to get us all killed.”

Riker shook his head slowly. “God, I hope not.” Riker said. “I wanted to live forever.”

They say that the destiny of a man can be read in the stars. Others say that a man can only create his destiny among the stars. Jimmy Kirk found himself somewhere in the middle. As the dinner festivities began to wind down, Jimmy Kirk found himself, at last, walking hand and hand with Edith Keeler. The two had managed to slip away from the dancing and loud music. As they left the dining area, Kirk caught the eye of Picard. The much older Captain gave Kirk a fleeting smile as if to say “go ahead, enjoy yourself you scamp.”

Picard, ever attentive, knew very well that Mathew Weer didn’t have a nephew. And he had also seen Kirk working on the docks many times before.

So, Picard thought to himself, the kid had snuck aboard and was about to deflower the young woman. Wasn’t that one of the joys of a young man’s life? Besides, Picard thought to himself. Pike was a son-of-a-bitch.

And so it was, at last, Jim Kirk and Edith Keeler stood together looking over the bow of the ship at the cold ocean below. Jimmy had given Edith his dinner jacket to help keep her warm.

“So, Mr. Kirk,” she said with a soft smile.

“Call me Jim.” Jimmy Kirk interjected.

“So, Jim, why risk the wrath of my fiancé and the wrath of who ever owns this fine dinner jacket, to simply share a couple dances with me and a few fleeting words?” She asked him.

Jimmy held her closer to him. “This is why.” He said as he absorbed her warmth, and she his. “I have sailed all over this world and this,” he held her even closer, “is the only true world a man needs.”

She smiled as their lips grew closer. “Do you use this line on all girls you have met?”

He shook his head. His hands glided up the back of her neck and to where she had pinned her hair up. “No,” he told her. “But I won’t lie, I have been with other women. Some of them younger, some of them older. But none as special as you.”

“Yeah,” she told him with a knowing smile, “you are pretty well polished. But that’s okay mister Kirk, I can tell you are a good lover. And when you look at me, I can see so much in your eyes. Perhaps, in a different time, we could have been lovers forever. But I am afraid this one night is all we have.” She leaned in closer and pulled him tight against her. “Take me.”

Jimmy shook his head as their lips met. The passion they felt as they kissed was undeniable. As he held her closer, Edith could feel his arousal and it called to her own yearning. Unlike the anger and drive that she had known from Christopher Pike, it was clear that Jimmy Kirk was a true lover and she, Edith, had to have him inside her.

So, like a young school girl flying in the kite of her first kiss, she suddenly ran from Jimmy’s arms laughing gaily. Jimmy Kirk followed her. They bobbed and weaved passed some of the other couples. Thanks to the tour of the ship she had taken with her fiancé, escorted by Captain Picard no less, she knew exactly where she was going. Perhaps her actions were not those of a conservative woman; but if Edith were to have to marry Chris then she wanted at least one night of love, pure love, before having to be chained to Christopher for the rest of her nights like so many balls and chains.

--
Christopher Pike strode into the main dining area. There was still a pretty good crowd enjoying the food and dancing. And while some of the passengers attempted to make conversation with him, Pike had only one thought on his mind; to find Edith Keeler, his bride to be.

He finally saw Captain Picard talking with one of the older passengers and his wife. Pike walked over to Picard.

“Can I help you mister Pike?” Captain Picard asked.

Pike bowed to the other two passengers to whom Picard was talking with, and then continued. “Yes Captain,” Pike began to say, “I was wondering if you had seen my fiance?”

Picard, knowing full well that Pike’s fiancé was with Kirk, feigned ignorance. “No Mr.Pike,” Picard lied, “I am sorry to say I do not. She was at the dining table earlier, but I was called to the bridge and lost sight of her.”

Then the older gentleman cut in. He spoke to his wife. “Edna,” the man said, “didn’t we see this young man’s fiancé dancing with that nice young gentleman?”

Picard could see the anger grow in Pike’s eyes.

“Yes dear,” Edna said, “I think we did. I think he said he was the nephew of Mathew Weer.”

Pike looked to Picard, with a look of accusation in his yes as he did. “So this nephew of mister Weer’s was sitting at the main table with Edith?”

Picard shook his head. “I wouldn’t exactly say she was with him. They were sitting with me, and other guests, at my table.”

The elderly woman, Edna, continued. “I think they went out to get some fresh air. It is rather stuffy in here,” Edna said to them all “now come on Herald,” she said to her husband, “let us go get some fresh air of our own.”

As the elderly couple walked away, Pike turned to Picard, with a sudden suspicion to ask Picard;

“I don’t remember mister Weer at the dining table the past two nights. How can that be?” Pike asked.

“I didn’t really notice.” Picard said, “but as to where your fiance may be, perhaps you should check the aft section where one of the other bands is playing.”

“I will do just that.” Pike said as he charged off in the direction of aft section of the dining area.

Picard knew that Kirk and Keeler had actually exited the front of the dining area. He only hoped he had given them a little more time before the enraged Pike found them. But were it not; Picard had done as much as he could. Part of that youthful lust is dealing with risk. Kirk had risked a confrontation with Pike, which was surely, now, a forgone conclusion.

Picard knew all to well about the risk of lust. It had made him the father of a child he could never acknowledge. Life was indeed a box of chocolate!

--

Three miles behind the Enterprise, and masked by the onslaught of icebergs, the German sub waited for its shot. Captain Klaus “Chang” Van Trapp eyed the prize, the Enterprise, through the periscope. The rest of the command crew waited in silence.

As Chang studied his hand held time-keeper in his hand, the first officer whispered into his ear.

“By doing this,” Ludwig said, “you are risking war with America. I beg you to reconsider this plan of yours.”

Van Trapp turned to face his first officer. “I will remind you of your place; first officer!” Trapp said with a loud anger. “I am the captain, and you, and this crew,” he said as he eyed the others, “will do as I order.”

Ludwig pulled out a pistol and put it to the captain’s head in one swift motion. He pulled the trigger. The bullet exploded the captain’s head, splattering blood and brain matter on the some of the crew who had been minding their posts. At that moment the crew of the U19 submarine exploded into a wild battle of fists and guns. It was a full fledged mutiny. And during the battle, with out anyone manning the controls, the sub struck an iceberg and took it and the crew to the bottom of the sea.

--

Several rows of cars lined the interior of the ship’s main storage area. There were various makes, including three or four from the current year; 1912. The sound of a young woman losing her virginity came from one of the cars, its window steamed over because of the romantic interlude taking place inside of it. The gentle rocking of the brand new car, a 1912 Rolls Royce, was more evidence that the act of making love was taking place in the backseat of the car.

It had taken Christopher Pike some time, but he had finally made it down into the large area that held the automobiles that were being ferried along with the passengers and crew. Pike could hear the soft moans of a woman; his fiancé to be more exact. He reached into his pocket and took out the small revolver he had brought along with him. It was time to end the life of the man who was with his fiancé, and if need be; her life too.

Suddenly the entire ship was rocked violently.

Jim Kirk was lost in the pure ecstasy when the ship was suddenly rocked. The strangest part was that the violent thrust of the ship was timed as Jim Kirk reached the pinnacle of making love with Edith. And as they both, he and Edith, absorbed the moment of pure orgasmic fulfillment, the window shield was shattered by what could only have been a gunshot.

“Get out of that car!” Pike’s voice yelled from the other side of the storage area. The cars, and other large items, had been packed in tightly so as to maximize the storage area.

“Oh my God,” Edith said excitedly, “it’s Christopher. He’ll kill you James! You’ve got to get out of here.”

Jim Kirk looked out the other window and could see Christopher Pike attempting to work his way past the jam packed cars.

“He looks crazed,” Jim Kirk said to Edith. “I think he’ll kill us both if given a chance.”

--

Captain Picard was wakened by the sound of repeated knocking at the door to his quarters. He made his way over to the door and opened it. It was one of deckhands.

“Captain, Sir,” the young man said, “the ship has struck an iceberg!”

Picard watched in cold silence as the young man ran off to do his duties. Picard wasn’t worried, not one bit at all. The Enterprise had been built with modern technology and was deemed to be unsinkable due to its engineering successes.

It took only a moment for Picard to be in his uniform. He made his way towards the bridge to get an update from his command crew.

--

Kirk held Edith’s hand and led her in the opposite direction from which Pike was coming at them; armed with a gun. The scorned husband to be saw the two young lovers fleeing toward the far exit. He aimed his gun and fired. The bullet missed Kirk by mere inches. Kirk looked back at Pike.

“I’ll search this boat if need be!” Pike yelled at Kirk. “And when I find you; you will die.”

Kirk tried to reason with Pike as he watched Edith scurry through the metal door. “Look, we can fight over her later. But the ship has hit an iceberg. You and I have a duty as gentlemen to make sure all women and children are seen to safety first!”

Pike aimed the gun and fired. Luckily Kirk ducked out of the large steel door as the bullet stuck the door behind him. Kirk ran forward onto the deck where he joined Edith. She held him close as they both saw the large iceberg as it was still jammed up against the side of the boat. Several large chunks of ice had crashed on the decks below where Second Class passengers were. Kirk could only hope his new friends, Scotty, along with Sulu and his acrobatic brothers were safe for the time being. Kirk grabbed Edith’s hand and ran, trying his best to help her as they both ran.

Pike emerged from the door and took in the small, but growing panic that was gripping the other passengers. At that moment Picard ran in Pike’s direction. Pike stopped the older, but stronger, ship’s captain.

“Captain,” Pike said to him, “surely this ship can withstand a collision with an iceberg!”

Picard shook his head. “That is what the engineering books say. The decks were arranged to not allow compartmental flooding beyond certain blocks of the ship.”

“Why don’t your words sound convincing?” Pike pressed Picard.

“The iceberg has sliced a whole above that line.” Picard’s voice was distant and hollow. The captain nodded to Pike an then ran off towards the bridge. Pike took the gun out of his pocket and looked at it. Kirk was right, he thought to him self. It was time for Pike to help those who needed his help first; and then he would kill James Kirk.

As Kirk and Edith ran along the upper deck Kirk could not help but notice that armed guards were keeping the Second Class passengers from coming out of their areas of the ship. He stopped running for a second and turned to face Edith.

“You keep going.” Kirk told her. “The lifeboats are just up around the next bend.”

She stopped him from running off with out her. “Wait,” she said to him, “where are you going. We have to get off this boat!”

He held her tight and kissed the top of her head. Then he looked at her and tried to wipe her tears with the sleeve of his shirt.

“I have friends down there.” Kirk said as he motioned to the guards with the guns. “I have to make sure they have a chance to live as well.”

She could tell in his eyes that he was not going to go on at this point.

“I will wait for you on the forward deck. I won’t leave this ship with out you!” She said to him.

He held her tight again. “I helped load this boat Edith.” He told her. “I saw the specs. There are not nearly enough lifeboats because they didn’t think the ship would need them. There are only enough for four hundred, maybe five hundred passengers.”

She gulped at the number she had just heard. “But the Captain told us, on the tour, that there were nearly sixteen hundred passengers and crew aboard!!!”

They both knew what it meant. The women and children would be saved first.

“Go, Edith,” Kirk said to her, “go now. I will find you up on the forward deck. But I have to do this!” Kirk pleaded with her.

“But why you, why must you save them?!” She demanded of him.

Kirk smiled back at her. “Because I’m a hero,” Kirk said to her. “And my friends need me!”

They shared one last kiss and then Kirk jumped over the guardrails and landed in the crowded frenzy below, in hopes of finding his friends.

Pike watched Kirk as left Edith. He ran over to Edith and took her by the arm. Kirk looked up and saw Pike forcing Edith forward. Kirk and Pike locked glances for one moment. Kirk nodded one time to Pike, and Pike nodded back. It was wordless gesture that the both new a vow to protect the woman they both loved.

Kirk forced him self on. He had to make sure Scott and the others were safe. James Kirk knew a lot about ships, having served on several in his past. And he knew that the ship, at the rate it was starting to list, had maybe, at the best, two hours left before it would be come lost at sea.

--

Communications officer Uhura tapped in the new the Morse code for ships distress. It was a group of three letters, repeated over and over. S O S. S O S.
--

From a distance another ship picked up the signal. It was a Bulgarian freighter. The Captain, Lusavious Spock, ordered the freighter to make best speed. Spock gazed through the dark, moonless sky. He could even see the flares far ahead that the Enterprise crew had been firing off. Spock could only hope his ship could arrive in time.

Captain Picard spoke to his crew in a most serious tone.

“Gentlemen,” Picard to his senior staff, “the ship isn’t going to make it.” Picard said softly. “Most of us are not going to survive this night. But it is our duty to make sure that our passengers do. Please help the crew that are maintaining the lifeboats and do your best to bring order to this process. And hurry,” Picard said as he looked at his hand held watch, “we don’t have much time.”
--
Jim Kirk had finally made it to the lower decks. Though he felt bad for leaving Edith with Pike, at least she was alive. He trusted Pike to see to Edith’s safety in this time of trial.

Kirk found Scotty, along with the Sulu-brothers acrobatic team, helping the young and old alike to the main deck. Scotty had a look of defeat in his eyes.

“Lad!,” Scotty called out to Kirk “what are ya doing down here’a?”

Kirk smiled. “Helping you, my good friend, now shut up!”

Hakaru Sulu spoke to Kirk. “They are not letting the coach class passengers to the forward decks where the lifeboats are. Our women and children will die.”

“They have guns!” Sulu’s younger brother said. “And will shoot us if we try to move to the decks.”

“Scotty, get these people ready!” Kirk yelled to Scotty. “I’ll see what I can do!”

Kirk made his way to the outer-deck that had the only stairway that led to the upper deck where the lifeboats were. Two men with guns were at the ready when Kirk rounded the corner.

“Who are you!” The men yelled. “None of your rift-raft are allowed up here!”

“Bullshit!” Another voice said with a full gruff sound. It was Mathew Weer. He was standing on the upper deck, but just behind the two armed men and in one move he pushed their two heads together with a force hard enough to knock them out.

“Well,” Mathew said to Jim Kirk, “hello nephew!” Mathew said with a broad smile.

Kirk waved to the others and soon the large throng of second class passengers rushed to the upper decks. Scotty and the Sulus ushered the women and children to the lifeboats as Mathew and Kirk watched on.

“Well,” Mathew said to Kirk as they watched the panic filled passengers run to the lifeboats, “I don’t suppose you’ll be trying to get on one of those boats?” Mathew asked.

“Nah,” Jim said with a smile, “we both know there are never enough lifeboats. The women, children, and rich white men will be the only ones who survive this night. The better question is why you are not up there getting on one those boats.”

“Not my style,” Mathew said. “I am just going to do my best to make sure one of those old rich white guys you mentioned doesn’t cost the life a woman or a child.” And with that said Mathew took out a large hunting knife and headed towards a lifeboat where he could see a man trying to board.

Jim Kirk had a feeling that the man trying to get aboard that lifeboat would not be alive much longer.
--

Uhura had sent her last message. Moments later she came upon Captain Picard in his quarters.

“Sir, what are you doing!?” She asked in pure horror as Picard held a hand gun to his head.

“I ask for your forgiveness dear lord,” Picard said as he stared back at Uhura, though he didn’t really see her. He pulled the trigger and Uhura could only watch as the left side of Picard’s head was blown away, blood splattering the window and wall behind him.

First officer Riker, having heard the shot, came running in. He stood in silence with Uhura and realized what had happened.

“Why?” Uhura asked. “This wasn’t his fault!”

Riker hugged her to try and make her feel better. And as he looked down at the dead captain’s body, Riker knew, but would not say it to Uhura, that Picard’s rush to break the speed records is what put them in this situation. Much would be said about the tragedy, Riker surmised, and those who investigated the incident would come to the same conclusion.

“Let’s go,” Riker told her, “the lifeboats are almost all full.” He released her from his arms.

They began to walk out of Picard’s room when suddenly Uhura darted back in and toward Picard’s body. Riker knew what her intent was.

“Don’t do it!” He demanded of her.

She heard Riker’s words as she gazed into Picard’s dead eyes. She put the gun to her head and pulled the trigger.

Riker averted his eyes. The shot was loud and crisp. Riker reopened his eyes to see Uhura’s body draped over Picard’s. Riker bowed his head. He took a moment and walked over to Picard’s bed and took the large blanket off and covered the dead bodies with it. It was a useless gesture, Riker concluded. He knew that once the ship sank their bodies would not be untouched by what was to come; but still he did it.

Riker left Picard’s quarters and shut the door behind him.
--

Pike, while holding Edith’s hand, was surrounded by a throng of people, all fighting to get aboard one of the last remaining lifeboats. A very fat man was just ahead of Pike trying to fight his way aboard. Pike looked down at Edith.

“Close your eyes.” He told her.

She did as he said and then she heard the gun go off. The rest of the crowd screamed in panic at the sound of the gun shot. Edith looked up at Pike in time to see a bullet, fired by one of the ship’s officers, strike him in the back of the head, killing him instantly. She was in shock as the blood splattered her face and body. Then the man who had just killed Pike, picked her up, and threw her onto one of the boats.

Edith Keeler was still standing as the lifeboat she was on was lowered to the ocean below. She looked up at the huge crowd of people who watched her boat descend into the water. Suddenly she saw an oriental man. His face was a cold as ice with determination. He made eye contact with Edith and nodded as he held out a blanket. Edith nodded back as he let the blanket fall.

Then time seemed to stop as the blanket fell down to her. With all her might she caught the small bundle. She looked inside of it and smiled down at the baby that was cuddled inside the blanket. Edith looked up to smile at the oriental man, but he was no longer there.

--
The RMS Enterprise was sinking. The lifeboat Edith was on had gotten far enough from the boat that they would be safe. But they could still here the panic and screams of those who were not able to make it onto a lifeboat.

Some had jumped into the ocean, but found death or would die due to the cold of the water. The crew was still doing their best to signal for help. Every few minutes the streak of light from a flare would be seen, followed by the sounds of its dieing flame.

As Edith held the small Chinese baby tighter, so as to keep the child warm, she wondered where Jim Kirk was. She looked at the ship. In its final moments of ‘life’, the ship was starting to arch up. The end was near.

RMS Enterprise--1912 "So Much For Time"

RMS ENTERPRISE

“So much for time…”

Featuring
Edith Keeler

The survivors of the RMS ENTERPRISE, mainly women and children, watched in silent horror as the massive ship was swallowed up by the ocean. Edith Keeler trembled in fear, like many others. Their lives had been shattered, hers was no different. Nearly seven hours later the survivors were rescued by a Bulgarian freighter. Keeler was almost not rescued; her lifeboat was out of range of the yelling voices of the rescuers. If not for the watchful eyes of the ship’s captain, Lusavious Spock, Edith Keeler, and the seven other passengers with her, would have been lost at sea.

Nine months later, safe and sound back home with her father, she would give birth to a baby boy. She would name the child James Tiberious Pike. Inside her heart she knew that the child’s father was Jim Kirk. But to insure her son a brighter future she would go on and tell the lie that only she and her father, who she confided in, knew.

Some believe there are no such things as miracles. They believe that the universe is too cold, too orderly, for such possibilities. But twenty-five years later the universe blinked.

Edith was taking her son, James, to attend Harvard. While disembarking the luxury liner that had brought them to America, Edith nearly fainted. Jim Kirk was one of the loading dock supervisors. If it wasn’t him, is sure looked like Jim, maybe older and more seasoned, but it was him, Edith was sure of it. Had he survived! She hired a private investigator to investigate this man who looked like her long lost love Jim Kirk.

Upon seeing James to Harvard, Edith headed back home to England. She returned to hotel room, in New York, to make last minute preparations to leave. A letter arrived from the private investigator. With a heavy heard Edith opened the letter and sat on the bed to read it.

The man on the dock was indeed Jim Kirk. He has survived the sinking of the ship, his body having been pulled from the sea. Amnesia had stolen his memory, most likely the result of a sever head injury. Edith smiled at the news. Would he remember her if she made the first move to contact him? Her smile dimmed as she read on. Jim Kirk was happily married to a woman named Carol Marcus. They had a son named David, who as luck would have it, was also attending Harvard.

Edith took out a match and lit the candle on the desk next to the bed. She burned the letter, and in so doing, she burned the past up as well. She would go on with her life, knowing that Jim was out there, somewhere, but he was out there living a happy and complete life. Edith would never find another person to love. If only head injuries were an option..for all.

This... is entertaining for lots of personal reasons. One, because I've spent a scary amount of time researching the RMS Titanic, and two, because I've spent a scary amount of time watching Star Trek in my life.

LMAO! For anyone who's read On the Nature of Wind and has even a decent working knowledge of the Titanic, it's not hard to spot the many, many little references I put in ONOW towards the Titanic. From some of the names, and certainly some of the places... even some of the dates.

So, you made me giggle with this. :D Apparently, I'm not the only one to reference one with the other, though you went much further than I did!

What really sparked my interest in the Titanic was when I read RAISE THE TITANIC way back in the late 70s. It was written by Clive Cussler, and turned into a terrible movie. But, back then, the Titanic had yet to be found. So I spent many years wondering where it was..was it still in one piece...did the Germans sink it?? (always a rumor)..So when I did RMS ENTERPRISE, I put all those rumors into the story, and retold the Titanic movie but with Kirk/Keeler in the place of Jack/ROSE from the movie....

There are some really fascinating TITANIC sites on the web...
