Several rows of cars lined the interior of the ship’s main storage area. There were various makes, including three or four from the current year; 1912. The sound of a young woman losing her virginity came from one of the cars, its window steamed over because of the romantic interlude taking place inside of it. The gentle rocking of the brand new car, a 1912 Rolls Royce, was more evidence that the act of making love was taking place in the backseat of the car.
(Flash back begins)
Young Jimmy Kirk was nineteen years old. Not one day of his life had been spent in school, not one day at all. And when his parents were killed in a fire, when he was eleven years old, he was forced to find a way to survive and did so by working with his uncle on the docks. Loading and offloading of cargo had made him very strong and very streetwise as well. Yet, somehow, he had maintained a youthful and very contagious charm. This was a plus for him, he found, when it came to romancing women, or attracting the better looking whores that caroused the docks. Though he longed for a more long lasting relationship with a woman, he would never be able to settle down with one. It was a lonely existence, but it had its benefits as well.
The rough lifestyle he lived had taken him to most parts of the world in just seven short years. When Jimmy was fourteen years old his uncle was lost at sea, leaving young Jimmy with out any other living relative. Jimmy was truly on his own.
Although he loved working the docks at the various harbors through-out England, he had longed to go home. And so it was one fateful day he saw her for the first time; the RMS Enterprise.
She had just been commissioned, and was rumored to be the finest luxury vessel ever built. Not only that, the fine vessel was set to take its maiden voyage to New York, and to challenge the current speed record for just such a voyage. The record had only been set three months earlier by the HMS Lexington, commanded by one of the world’s most respected commanding officers; Robert Wesely.
The HMS Titanic was captained by almost an equally respected captain as well; Jean-Luc Picard. Though Picard was French, he was highly respected in England for his exploits during his naval and career as a luxury liner Captain.
With a run of luck at a random poker game on the docks, Jimmy found him self in possession of a second class ticket, and was set to board the Enterprise. While boarding the vessel, on the small ramp that the second class passengers, used lighting struck for the second time that day. Not only had he won passage aboard the vessel, he also caught the eye of a very rich and beautiful woman, barely his age if that, as she boarded the Enterprise on the first class ramp, with her servants in tow. When their eyes met, Jimmy knew that he had found the love of his life.
“Oh, don’t mind that one laddy,” the Scottish accent of one of the other second class roughnecks warned as he too eyed her, “she is engaged to that man o’er there.” The rough neck pointed to a very elegant looking man who followed behind her three servants as they carried her bags aboard.
“Who is she, and who is he?” Jimmy asked the roughneck.
“Don’t ye read the paparrrs?” the roughneck said with a laugh. “His name is Christoph’a Pike. His family is well vested in oil and word has it he is a millionaire several times o’er. I’d like to see inside of his wallet, if you know what I mean lad.”
Jimmy Kirk listened to the Scottish man talk about Pike, but not once did Jimmy Kirk allow his eyes to leave their target; the woman. Though their mutual glance had been broken by her having to move up the ramp, he was quite sure she felt something for him as well in those few short seconds.
“So, who is she then, mister…?” Jimmy searched his memory for the Scotsman’s name realizing finally he didn’t know it.
“Oh, you can call me Scotty.” Scotty said as they both shook hands.
Jimmy returned his gaze the woman as she was nearly about to disappear into the bowels of the ship.
“Ahhhh, yes, she is fine mare isn’t she?” Scotty said. “Her name is Edith Keeler. Her father, Francis Keeler, is a world famous maker of fine wines. No doubt Keeler is looking for more investment in his company and so is marrying his daughter out to the most available bachelor he could find.”
“That is so cruel,” Jimmy said, “treating women like they are nothing but cattle to be sold to the highest bidder.”
“Perhaps,” Scotty said, “but such the world that we live in.”
Jimmy nodded in agreement. He knew that he would not let one passing of the sun go by until he met the beautiful woman named; Edith Keeler.
