River Song Gone?

I am all in favour of the Doctor dying of old age, and leaving room for not only BF stories but the return of the 10th Doctor in some other form.

but the problem is that we have seen him get old before, and we've seen him get out of it. Considering what the master was able to do to him in the Last of the Timelords arc... I'd have to assume that 12 regenerations is just a polite convention they stick to in an attempt not to be garish.

Twice actually, if you count John growing old with his nurse for about 12 seconds in imagination land.

I laughed when Sarah Jane called 4 "middle aged".

Well Doctor 11 could meet up with River again, or for all we know Doctor 12 or 13 will. I'd be tempted to suggest recasting a younger River, but Alex has such an iconic look that that could be difficult.

In all honesty I wasn't a huge fan of River, so it wouldn't bother me if the rest of the relationship was off camera :D

You all seem to be forgetting her comment to him in the library "you're so young". He said "really, I'm not" but that's by the by. The implication is that whatever incarnation she has a relationship with, it isn't someone who looks 10 years younger than DT.

Yes, I got the impression from that line (and I think several others, although I do not have the episode here for reference) that she recognised him specifically as a man, albeit a younger version of the one she knew, rather than just The Doctor as an individual. It could probably be retconned the other way if you want, but I definitely think it was Ten she knew.

I'm not sure why everyone is no derisive of the idea of bringing her back. I know the issue can be shrugged off in the traditional "we're not trekkies, we don't care about continuity, timey-wimey, wahey!" sort of attitude of modern Who fans, but its not exactly a radical idea to bring back a character from a previous story who's part in The Doctor's life was clearly not contained therein.

That comment made me think of why I wouldn't like to see River Song touched on again. I guess what bothers me is that the writer was mixing two ideas at once -- A companion the Doctor meets before he 'meets', and the concept of a companion whom the Doctor loves so much he actually tells her his name. What's the problem with having both of these concepts in one character? Well, when River Song finally appears in the Doctor's life we already know they're going to hit it off excellantly and become so attached he tells her his name...We also know that she lives through their adventure(s) so that she can go back in time to the "Library." Bam. You not only gave away a huge spoiler that would have been fun to experience but you also sucked out a good deal of drama potential.

I've got a feeling that River Song will be explored in spin off media, but not really touched upon on tv again.

Well 10 is younger than 11, in the same way that Hartnell's Doctor is younger than Davison's. I took that line to mean, not that he looked young, but that the look in his eyes was younger than she'd ever seen it before. I always took it to mean that River's relationship with the Doctor went far beyond anything physical.

Like I say, it's entirely possible that River barely knows 10 or 11, and it's 12 or 13 where meat of the love story really exists.

^ agreed. he may not be much older when he meets her, but with the trauma of losing Donna and seeing Davros return, he make 'look' older in the eyes...

Licensing issues. They ain't allowed to touch anything after 8. But I haven't actually explored their Sarah Jane catalog yet but there does seem to be some bleed between the two eras.
There's not. All of BF's Sarah Jane Smith audios were made before she appeared on the new show (though the second season was released around the time SJ was appearing in "School Reunion"), and there's no connections.

In the other direction.

Some people were jumpnig up and down about Sarah Jane off handedly kinda mentioning her audio adventure with a Graske during whatever became of Sarah Jane?

Speaking of "River Song Gone?" ... Do people think River Song is gone from her own progression as well? By which I mean that the Library really is where she died and stayed dead, only a ghost living eternally on a hard drive?

Or will the Doctor, after giving her the screwdriver, go back to the library and get her out of the machine so they can run again?

I really hope not.

That's not to say it can't be done. But I'm not sure what kind of story you could tell that wouldn't read like a rewrite of The Time Traveler's Wife.

Moffat said in some interview or panel at River knew the 10th and future versions of the Doctor. But I kinda doubt we'll see her again, at least on the show.

She never met a Graske in the audios, and if there's any other references to the audios in the TV show, I've never caught them.

I believe she only said that the Graske was on Earth a few years ago, referring to the interactive Doctor Who story.
