River Song Gone?

I dunno. I like the character well enough, but I'm not sure if I'd prefer seeing her back, or just leave her as yet another of the Doctors mysteries. Probably the best way to handle it is to add a little grey to Tennants hair for his final special, and just assume that a number of years and adventures have passed and that the whole 'River' story happened offscreen.

Jenny OTOH, I'll be very annoyed if she doesn't turn up again for a one-shot. At least so the Doctor will know she's alive.

You're forgetting the Doctor is currrently travelling alone. There was no cliff hanger to the Next Doctor. We may never see River Song again on screen. Her time travelling with the Doctor could take place between the Specials.

I just don't know why people who know Doctor Who, and know about regeneration, take it that she literally was David Tennant's Doctor's wife.

THANK YOU - this is the best post in this thread.

She was the Doctor's wife - for all we know she knew him through ten regenerations (I do not believe for a second the idea that 13 is the maximum and cannot be broken) and she saw Tennant and thought it just as likely he was another future regeneration and not a past one. It is possible she is quite used to him appearing non-chronologically in his life.

It is scary how sci-fi fans are so prone to taking things intended to remain a mystery totally literally and expecting them all to be played out on-screen, as if they are real. It is borderline to trek fan-fic where you get a ten page tactical assessment of the hero ship to help you get to sleep.

^ you know when she looked into his eyes and said he was young, I assumed she was not looking at the age of the regeneration, but the age of his soul, that said the episode did leave me with the impression she have known him as David Tennant.

Although, there was never anything said that is proof that she was with Ten, she said he was young, but that could mean in regeneration terms.

As said, centuries couldve passed between episodes and specials. As we dont really know how the Doctors regenerations age, my guess is very slowly, it is perfectly viable for this to happen between said specials etc.

I'd prefer not to see or hear about her, my imagination has taken that role, and its a good one. Your outcome maybe different to mine, but Moffat used the best device ever to close the episode, the imagination.

Besides, Moffat being the all clever little thing he is, he gave us one line, ONE line only to explain why we never saw inside the book, never heard the truth behind River and The Doctor, never heard anything really explained...

ONE line explains the whole thing, the whole reason why we will never see River Song again or an explanation to the who fiasco.

ONE line that us fans can relate to, a line that gets out imaginations going in overdrive...

"Spoilers, Darling."

;)

Sums it up beautifully for me.

I thought you were going to say WWTW

I think the fact she recognises him as Ten is a very big clue to the fact she knew him as Ten, or at least the post regeneration Ten.

On their last day together, when they danced, he came to her door with a new haircut.

She said nothing about a new face.

Isn't the music from the end of Forest of the Dead entitled "The Greatest Story Never Told" on the S4 soundtrack?

That pretty much sums up for me how much of River's tale we'll ever learn in future eps.

I haven't seen the episode for a while, but how quickly does she say to The Doctor "you're so young" after meeting him? Unless its straight away, she's got to be talking about that one regeneration, surely?

^Could be open to interpitation. She looks at him in a deeper sense than that of just physical. She could perhaps understand or sense it's a younger him in terms of regeneration. She does call him "Pretty Boy" which is what you might call a 26 year old 11th Doctor.

It does take her a while to realise he's younger than she has seen him.

I hope we see her again. I loved the episode and the character. It would be great if there is a special with Tennant and her.

Not that we know about.

A novel might go off the deep end with girliness.

though a comic would be nice.

i was wondering the other day about if she bumped into 1 through Nine? Would she try to steal a snog and from which ones more than others?

It's likely River was used to The Doctor showing up with a different face. As she tried to place The Doctor in her diary, she indicates she's used to bumping into him before he's done certain things with her. It's possible she might go on a date with #12, later have lunch with #11, make love at night to #13, then the next day go away on a journey with #11. Hence the diary so she knows what to say and what not to say.

A relationship like this might lead to her really seeing his "souk" first, and face second. She may have never met Doctor #10 before, or had all her adventures with an older #10. Either way, it wasn't until she looked deep into his eyes, gateway to the soul, that she was amazed at how young he was.

River is a great character, it would be a shame if she never got another story.
I defintely got the impression that River knew 10 , but it was left vague if she knew other Doctors.

I was a big fan of River and Alex Kingston herself is a fine actress...I would love for her to return to the series but like others have stated I'm doubting that it was ever intended that would happen. River does comments on his facial features though and I think if I remember correctly he is wearing different clothes, doesn't she say that the Tenth looked much younger? Anyways it doesn't really matter either way. The Doctor is the Doctor just a different incarnation with some personality and fashion alterations...;)

She's obviously met the tenth Doctor before, because she expects him to know who she is-- if she'd never met that incarnation before, why would she think he knew her? However, given how out-of-sequence her meetings with the Doctor apparently are, she could have met any number of future Doctors.

Personally I would prefer it if River doesn't appear on the show again. She's a great character, but I prefer that their time together remains somewhat of a mystery and something we can all come up with our own ideas about.

I'm wondering if she had to do this again for the first time how eager she'd be to sneak a snog from one through 8, not that there's anything wrong with them and nothing we wouldn't try to do to our own wives and husbands if we fell through a hole in time and was give the opportunity to smooch them when they were just 17.
