River Song Gone?

Australis

Thinking of our new, chinny hero, impossibly young, can you see him with River Song? UNless they radically recast her, I can't.

Thoughts?

I was actually thinking about this the other day and thought that they might want to consolidate River Song's time with The Doctor into Tennant's remaining specials. Could be done. Would be appreciated by fans.

^ Yeah, I agree. In all the hype of the Eleventh Doctor, it seems we're all forgetting that Tennant still has a couple of specials to do this year.

I first saw Alex romantically entangled with another woman in the Ballard of Moll Flanders. Don't sell her short. If she can go to sleep in the arms of a girl, then Alex can go to sleep in the arms of a girlyman fine.

She'll be a fascinating speciminn yet for some years to come.

well he is always going to meet her when she is younger than when she was in the library, maybe he meets her younger than we all thought it would be.

I wish the Doctor was not without a companion for all these speiclas. This whole "companion of the week" thing isn't working very well, and I think maybe having River in the remaining specials, not to show the WHOLE relationship, but just to show parts of it as other adventures unfold...

...never gonna happen...

^No, it's not. I really, really, really don't see it EVER happening at all, in any way, shape, or form on television. Much like Sally Sparrow, River Song was never meant to be a recurring character. And, even if she did, no one has ever, ever convinced me from anything in those two episodes that she originally met/loved the 10th Doctor. I just don't know why people who know Doctor Who, and know about regeneration, take it that she literally was David Tennant's Doctor's wife.

Not to crush anyone's FanFic, but god am I sick of hearing about River Song. I fell in love with Alex Kingston years ago. Doesn't mean I ever want to see her reprise the character again, though...

I probably shouldn't mention that I'd also love to see the Doctor's "daughter" pop up again.

Actually, I remember before Forest of the Dead aired that many thought River might turn out to be his daughter, only regenerated.

You know we are talking about a time lord here. time isn't linear to what we see on screen. From the season 4 finale to the time that Matt Smith's Doctor shows up decades or even centuries may have passed.

A very good point!

Hell, centuries may have passed for The Doctor between Journey's End and The Next Doctor.

If Moffat wants to bring River Song back in a meaningful way (oh how I doubt he does, but if), he'll have had her chemistry with possible Doctors in mind while casting. And even if he hasn't, I'm not inclined to make assumptions about Smith's ability to play against Kingston based on his age and chin.

I think the period of having River as his companion happened inbetween right after losing Donna and before the Xmas special.

After leaving the Noble's household, he went to the 51st Century to find River Song as a young archeology student (where he told River all about Donna), spent several years with her and after their final meeting at the dance, knowing after that he was also going to lose her (again), he went back in time to 1851 to spend Christmas in London to help cheer himself up...

If River Song has ever been intended to turn up again, I'll eat my hat.

And wait for the inevitably terrible tie-in novel published in 2033 when the show is once again the province of fanboys who have to explain every little bit of the show's past.

I will so be in to BigFinish when they start doing Tenth Doctor stuff, or any of the other newWho spin-offs they produce. (Jenny seems like someone they might make a series based on)

This theory makes alot of sense to me. To me, it also explains why he went so ga-ga for River Song. At "Journey's End" he's probably feeling the loneliest he's ever felt in his life and he has Davros' philosophical quandaries to consider. The cure for loneliness is companionship so he goes off to find River Song and creates the closest bond of his life, revealing his own name to River.

'Course, realistically, I don't expect that plot line to come up again.

Licensing issues. They ain't allowed to touch anything after 8. But I haven't actually explored their Sarah Jane catalog yet but there does seem to be some bleed between the two eras.

yes I know they wont be getting the rights to the new series Doctors & characters for quite a few years (if ever) but yeah it does seem like Sarah Jane can bring some New series to BF, the gap between School Reunion & Invasion of the Bane for example. (provided they are allowed to use K9)

I think there will be room for it; nothing says that the Tennant Doctor has to die in the time frame in which we've been watching him. I'm betting that Tennant will be a Doctor to die of old age (i.e. he finally won't be fast enough to save himself and the day at the same time). The final special could even be an epic set of teases showing us a lifetime of adventures over a few minutes in a build up to the last story.

Such a time lapse approach would also be a good way to give Moffat a clean slate to work with; there would be hundreds of years worth of things we don't know about, so we would be playing a little bit of catch up just like we did with Eccleston's intro.
