Riven (2024 Remake)

A screenshot of Riven 2024, showing the village on Jungle Island. A wooden walkway winds around a lagoon. High bluffs surround it, with round clay dwellings clinging to one side. In the water, a peculiar hole is visible next to a small dock.
Has anybody else played the new re-release of Riven? Like the remake of Myst from a few years ago, it's real-time, free-roam, and designed for VR (though it looks great on regular old computers and consoles).

It looks absolutely beautiful. Unlike the new Myst, which had a substantial art-style shift, the original Riven was detailed enough that it was much easier to translate the look up to modern standards. There were also some new explorable areas added that were gated off in the original, and a couple of fairly startling reconceptions. I also liked the redesigned aspects of the flow and puzzle design. I was a kid when the original Riven came out, so I never really had the experience of solving it "correctly" until now (even when I knew the theory on replays, I never bothered to collect all the necessary information myself just because it seemed like too much trouble and nonsense to work out by hand).

Yeah, it's a great remake. The adjustments made for the sake of VR are way more organic and well-considered than the MYST remake. Surprisingly performant on my system, too.

I used to play the original for HOURS without understanding what I was even doing - I just loved walking around in such a beautiful world (and I wasn't even annoyed that I had to constantly switch CDs, haha). The graphics were top notch for Win 95 back then. I might give this remake a try. If they release it on PS5, that is.

I never got very far in Myst when it originally came out. I was more into 3rd-person point-and-click adventures at the time it released, and while it definitely signaled a new subgenre, i always felt like this type of game made me feel isolated seeing as you never met up or interacted with other characters other than by video and solving difficult puzzles.
