^The Overlords didn't destroy the planet, that was a side effect of the last generation of humanity evolving into the Cosmic Overmind and shedding their physical forms. All of this would have probably happened anyway (assuming humanity didn't wipe itself out through other means before it could evolve), they just made the process smoother and considerably less traumatic.
They even took steps to preserve the Earth's non-human life, presumably to re-seed on another suitable planet somewhere. Where it can continue to evolve and perhaps in million of years produce another species that can join the Overmind.
