Rings of Power S3/Hunt for Gollum Anticipation and JRR Tolkien Discussion thread

Was surprised to see the Nazgul so soon, i expected them to build up the human kings some before turning them but maybe that'll be the plot of this season. Was very surprised Sauron already forget the One Ring too but maybe that'll be one of the final scenes of the season. Lord knows they can't spoil these events because everybody and their mother has at least read the books or seen the movies even if they have not read The Silmarillion.
They technically aren't actually the Nazgul yet, they're using a different name for them here. From what I've seen I've kind of gotten the impression that they might still be human, or at least aren't full on wraiths like they are in Lord of The Rings yet.

Nazgnagôl is the name the show has coined for them. Here's the article that covers it.

Im in the middle of rewatching The Rings of Power, which led me to the decision to start Marathoning the six Peter Jackson Middle-earth films (of which TRoP is a "spiritual companion") tonight, and I had genuinely forgotten just how much I love the The Hobbit Trilogy.

It's also interesting and fun doing a rewatch with the new contextual lore of TRoP in mind when it comes to Gandalf and Elrond (since we now know why Elrond can read Ancient Dwarvish and how truly deep Gandalf's connection with the race of Hobbits goes).

While I certainly headcanon it that way, isn’t Rings of Power officially unconnected and legally distinct from the Jackson films (and just visually trying very hard to disguise that)?

I did my first watch of the Extended The Hobbit Trilogy recently, and honestly had no clue which scenes were added because it has been years since I watch the theatrical. And I had a lot of fun.
I can understand why people who are deeply in love with the book don't like it, but it's truly very engaging and finds clever ways of tying in some things from the LOTR books into the whole six movie arc.
And yes, TRoP is underappreciated and even though it may not officially be part of the whole canon of movies, it works for me.

I headcanon it that way as well. I consider TRoP to be movie canon but not book canon as neither the show nor the movies are 100% consistent with the books. However, has there been anything established on the show that conflicts with the movies? I can't think of anything to be honest.

I wonder if the show could find a way to incorporate the character of Glorfindel, who was not included in the cinema adaptation, the same way that they found a way to include Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Wights.

According to Tolkien lore (by way of Jess of the Shire), Glorfindel was reincarnated by the Valar after being killed by a Balrog in the First Age and returned to Middle Earth right around the time that Sauron created the rings, which would fit the timeline better than any of the Gandalf stuff does.

Although JD Payne, Patrick McKay, and the rest of the TRoP crew were legally prohibited by the Tolkien Estate from directly working with Peter Jackson himself in any capacity (something they had tried to do on a Consultory basis before being told to cut off all contact), there was no way for the Tolkien Estate to legally regulate the production's choice of filming locales, effects and prop houses to partner with, etc , which allowed Payne and McKay and their team to work with WETA Workshop and John Howe (who had continued to do freelance design work for WETA) and Howard Shore (who conposed and performed the series' Opening Titles theme), thus allowing them (Payne and McKay) to create a Spiritual connection between The Rings of Power and the Jackson films through the series' design and production in lieu of an Officially sanctioned one. They were also able to choose to film the first season in New Zealand, further establishing a Spiritual link between the series and the Jackson films.

Establishing Shots of New Zealand locations also continue to be used even after the production's move to England for Season 2+ and WETA continues to remain involved tangentially through the production's new UK-based prop houses maintaining the aesthetic that WETA and Howe established.

TLDR, it's very much intended for TRoP to exist alongside the Jackson films even though no formal official direct links between them can be legally established, which is why I referred to TRoP as being a Spiritual Companion Piece to the Jackson films.

This doesn't seem to have been mentioned here yet, but it seems that Amazon will be dropping the entire season 3 over a 3-week period. Four episodes will drop on November 11th with two episodes a week dropping over the following 2 weeks.

I was going through my Imgur account since half the board can't see those images anymore, and this popped up. Thought some here might like it:

It's hard to get a good picture because it's so big, but here is my pride and joy. 49 signatures from the cast and crew. 7 Oscar winners.

Even with the season being dropped over a 3-week period, viewership numbers likely won't be an issue because not everyone who watches the show is going to watch more than one episode a week.

I have to admit that I had been really looking forward to watching the depiction of the destruction of Numenor, but the recent images out of Gyirong Port have really dampened that enthusiasm. :(

I wonder how they're going to handle it?

They could always just put up a warning that the episode or episodes that deal with it could be disturbing to some viewers due to recent events. I've seen a few shows do that when stuff in them ends up being close to stuff that has recently happened in the real world.
