I hear what you're saying. Finally shaved the 'goat' after 10 years because the white was starting to out number the dark. Guess I could it grow back out and do the 'Riker'/Frakes things and go 'Just For Men'. Riker wasn't a dick......but he did color his beard in the later years. I'm just sayin'.

Seriously in Second Chances hes an asshole to himself, in addition hes a dick to his subordinates and I don't like his smug sleazy grin. If some lieutenant, in this case himself, or a commander like Shelby had a great idea they would present to Picard, he'd have a fit about it and say, any cool ideas you have, you run by me so I can shoot them down. He did this so as not to look incompetent or lazy in front of Picard and justifieid it by saying that he didn't want to take unnecessary risks. This is why he never made captain in the shows run.

I think they should have made an episode for Peter David's book "Imzadi." The down and DIRT of Riker and Troy... It showed more about the relationship between the two... perfect romance...

I did not exactly like Second chances either... There was something about Lt. Riker that rubbed you the wrong way and made you not like him.

He was arrogant, smug and full of himself. (in my humble opinion) It reminded me alot of my Lieutenant when I was in service.

If I had a choice between Commander Riker and Lt. Riker in real military. (people who were just like him) I would still serve under Commander Riker. Here's why

He's got his shit together, he can handle himself, He is a seasoned veteran... Lieutenant Riker in my opinion would most likely shot by friendly fire with the attitude he portrayed.

He acts like a dumb ass 90 day wonder as we called them in the military. Officers who have their head up their wazoo... And can't lead for nothing.

Lt. Riker IMO was less confident and seasoned, but the two couldn't be exactly alike since they had different experiences. Tom didn't fight the Borg, or get accused of murder.

I liked Cmdr. Riker, since he seemed assured and somebody you could depend on. As for Will being a dick to Tom, well to me it was mutual. I couldn't blame them, i'd probably react the same way if i met an exact double of myself.

Not a Riker fan here, Tom or Will, but one could make the argument that Tom should have been bugfuck nuts after spending all that time alone. That he was not suggests that Riker is a very strong personality indeed.

The only time I ever thought of Riker as being a dick, was in "Chain of Command", though in that case, everyone on the whole ship was being a dick. Except Data and Worf. I was SO happy when Jellico locked Riker in his quarters for mouthing off, and put Data in charge as First Officer. That was an intentional message... if Riker won't follow his orders, and take it like an officer and a man, then he'll replace him with someone who'll do the job right, and without any drama.

After watching the show for nearly 20 years, I have come to the following conclusion. As much as I like the cast members, there were too many main cast members for this series. Riker and Deanna were the most redundant. Data could have easily been the First Officer and Science officer. The captain should have gone on away missions. On TOS, BOTH Kirk and Spock would travel down to the surface on away missions. When they would get screwed, it was up to Scotty (occasionally Mr. Sulu) to save the ship by being in command. Back in those days, officers were pretty useful and competant. In regards to Deanna, she belonged in an office helping patients, not right next to the Captain. She especially shouldn't be in a position to be Data's commanding officer during a crisis situation. Cobra

Deanna should have spent most of her time, like Dr. Crusher, in sickbay. As a counselor she should, in my opinion, be trained as a medic. Her place on the bridge is to give the captain advice on who they are meeting and to try to anticipate any potential problems. And as she's portrayed in the books (so I've heard) as the Head Diplomatic Officer, ready to meet and great and forge the basis for treaties alongside the captain.

She is not in a position to command Data. In Gambit, Data takes command of the Enterprise, not Deanna, since he is after Riker in the chain of command. She is outside the command structure, and would only take command in special, rare instances, like in Disaster. (I do admit Ro should have been in charge, but having Troi in command made some, if convoluted, sense.)

A starfleet captain is a valuable commodity. Finn made it clear in The High Ground that by holding a starship Captain, especially the one commanding the Federation Flagship, he could call the shots. Having you CO and XO go away on missions would be like putting the President and Vice President in Afghanistan. You could do it, but if something went wrong you're in a world of sh*t. Also, as Troi reminded Riker in BoBW, with Picard kidnapped, he was in Command and needed to be on Enterprise to make the big decisions.

While Data, Geordi and Worf are all capable, competent officers, they should be at their primary post if at all possible. That's why Geordi didn't take over as XO in Gambit. He was needed in engineering. Worf was given the spot since as XO he could also man the weapons.

^^^Yeah, what the last two people said. It's amazing that he was able to integrate back into society at all in such a short time, particularly when you're faced with that sort of Twilight Zone oh-look-there's-another-me crap.

TBQH, Picard came across as being more of a "Dick" than Riker, at least Riker actually took time to socialise with the crew (although its not exactly protocol for the Captain to socialise) Picard could have at least socialised with his Senior Officers (something which Kirk, Sisko and Janeway all did), rather he shut himself away in his Quarters or Ready Room during Off-Duty periods and even when he did rarely "Socialise" with his officers, he merely had breakfast with Dr Crusher, etc

But that was the beauty of All Good Things, when Picard realized what a fool he was for isolating himself from his crew rather than showing them how much he valued them by simply being with them, playing poker, hanging out. Captain Kirk had the whole Uncle Captain thing down straight from the start. Picard was more of a work in progress that didn't know he was a work in progress.

I just saw Second Chances today, and it occurred to me that the crux of the episode is fan fiction for those who want to see Riker and Troi in a relationship and see background on it, with a dose of rationalization thrown in as to why it never happened up to that point.

Riker vs. Riker is included perhaps to give it some edge; but also, these Rikers are transported emotionally back to the episode Icarus Factor, where both are still carrying the baggage Kyle Riker piled on them. Those Rikers are cranky.

I think ALL the first officers have a bit of dick in them (err .. hang on .. never mind)

Starting with the big guy himself .. Spock. You can't get any "dickier" than him... but he's still the all time coolest character.

Riker .. already covered. Except for the fact he's a bit scared of becoming a captain. Every time someones asks him why he hasn't got a command of his own .. he starts gushing about how much he loves Picard and wants to bear his children.

Chakotay .. constantly kissing Janeway's arse and secretly despising her. I remember the evil glint in his eye in the episode in series 6 when Janeway went on an away mission for a couple of weeks and left him in charge.

Riker was a good character, both in writing and acting, but his relationship with Picard was not a realistic one. All relationships have conflict; he essentially kissed Jean-Luc's derrière (an apt word considering Picard's nationality).
