Ridley Scott to Direct New Blade Runner

As was announced earlier this year, a company called Alcon Entertainment secured the rights to make films set in the Blade Runner universe (though not a remake of the original film itself).

As of today, it has been announced that Ridley Scott himself has been signed to direct and produce this new film, though it's still apparently not decided yet if the new film will be a prequel or a sequel. The article also states that is currently "unclear" if Harrison Ford will be at all involved, since the film has, of course, not progressed to the script stage yet.

My first thoughts? "No. God, no. Please, no." Especially since Scott has stated that he will "never work without 3D again."

I think, in honor of the original film and in sadness over this news, I will finally get around to embarking upon a thorough watch of the five-disc Blu-ray set I bought earlier this year.

I thought the intention was to make it neither a Sequel, nor a Prequel, but, simply another story set in the same universe, entirely divorced from the original Blade Runner?

I wouldn't be surprised if the new story in the same universe is what ends up happening, but, regardless, with Scott's involvement, I'm there.

As risky as it is, I have to admit it WOULD be cool to see that amazing Bladerunner world again on the big screen, and to see how it might have changed and evolved.

I mean, you knew someone was going to make another one someday, so at least it's gonna be Ridley doing it.

BR, my all time fav film. Very few filmmakers would give me hope this would be worthwhile, as the original really doesn't call for any kind of followup.

But it will have RS. Ok, it has the benefit of the doubt. Bonus if they manage to rope Vangelis to do the soundtrack.

Or if they can't get him...Bear McCreary.

I don't know what the hell to think of this.

On the one hand sure, I'd like to see more cyberpunk movies and I guess tying it into Blade Runner is a feasible way to get a budget (probably more sensible then adapting, shall we say, Neuromancer).

On the other hand this could very easily be an uninvolved retread of the earlier film, or a brand new story a little closer to the action-hunting-androids draft of the film that Dick apparently so derided. Scott's attachment is no assurance of quality, although it's an assurance of something, I guess.

I'd rather see Scott make The Forever War or Brave New World, both of which he's had in development for some years now, but it's good to have him making sci-fi films again regardless.

Please, no. Unless it's classic, a sequel will only diminish the original. Look at the Godfather Part III. It wasn't a bad movie, but can anyone say that it enhances the greatness of the first two? No. If anything, it lessens it.

Another vote for Forever War/Forever Peace. Why remake a movie that doesn't need it when so many potentially great movies go unmade?

I'm for it.

Blade Runner's great, but it's great because of the performances and direction. Even if they screw up the "universe," it's not as if they'll be injecting contradictions into the world's most cohesive story.

There were a couple of sequel novels to Blade Runner ("The Edge of Human," "Replicant Night," and "Eye of Talon"). They weren't written by Philip K. Dick, but they were considered official sequels as they continued Deckard's story.

Then they could do a prequel movie with Justin Bieber as a young Deckard, I guess...

And I thought I was evil for thinking about suggesting Shia LeBoeuf. :rommie:

Forget movies, I'd love to see a Blade Runner TV series given the primo treatment on HBO or Showtime. Time for some premium cable sci fi!

Blade Runner was/is a great movie. I saw it first run, by the way; I was the only one in the theater.

It was great even in its initial cut, with the voice-over, without the extra wankery, and even inexplicably flying off into the pristine wilderness at the end.

I'll give a new film all due consideration, but I'm not pumped. I'm perfectly content with what we got the first time, a great, memorable, and moving film.

I, too, am starting to get really bored with safe franchises.

So, feel free to wow me, but Jesus Christ, yawn.

I'm cautiously optimistic now that Ridley Scott is on board. At least the first thought wasn't to go to a mercenary director like Brett Ratner or Len Wiseman. I think this will ultimately end up like Prometheus, set within the universe but not necessarily connected in any other meaningful way.

The problem with a Blade Runner prequel is the film is set in 2019. To give us a young Deckard, you'd have to actually set it in the recent past.

with Scott involved i don't think there will be anything to worry about.
