Riddick Returns ?

Vin Diesel has another SF movie opening this weekend, Babylon AD. If it performs well at the box office, that might persuade Universal to greenlight another Riddick movie. It may not do well, though; all the press on it is about the director complaining that it sucks due to studio interference.

Directors should wait until their movie performs badly before starting to whine about interference. It's like painting a portrait on commission and then chucking a bucket of white paint at it.

I liked both films, although the Chronicles was very overblown. I hope another one is on the way.

It's strange because the Chronicles of Riddick starts out so strong and fizzles so badly by the end, off the top of my head I can't think of any film that goes from one extreme to the other like it.

The sequel only bombed because they tried too much. There has been rumours of more movies for awhile, but they would be much more cheaply made.

Escape from Butcher Bay is the best movie tie-in game released so far. The guys at Starbreeze really made a great game

I think what made Chronicles stumble at the box office was that it was too different from Pitch Black, granted we don't get much of an idea of the outside world in PB, but we go from gritty horror survival future movie, to epic mythical antihero story
it was too much of a change . . .

EFBB was a great bridge between the movies, even though it mostly takes place before PB, it went a long way to giving Riddick a backstory.

Hyperspace05 has a point... the "Director's Cut", with the inclusion of 15 minutes, is a far superior film to the one shown in theatres. Seriously-- it's amazing the difference that just a few extra lines of back story can make.

Also, the directors cut is really edited like an 'R' movie - unlike the theatrical which was 'PG13'. This is especially noticeable in the Crematoria fight sequence. This also helps reduce the some of the difference in feel from Pitch Black ('R'). Going from a 'R' movie to a 'PG13' sequel is *never* a good idea - and it certainly does not fit the main character.

Reverend, have you tried to watch the "Director's cut" of COR, or just the regular version?

I've tried both and I think I fell asleep about an hour into the Director's cut. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't get any purchase on the plot.

It's amazing how director's cuts improve movies. Just look at Kingdom of Heaven. I HATED the movie when I saw it in theaters, but now having seen the director's cut, I love it.

Oh I agree, I loved the Director's Cut of "Kingdom of Heaven" and the special edition of "Abyss" is almost an entierly different and far superior film.

I should point out however that I'm a sucker for almost anything by Ridley or Cameron...almost anything; can't deal with Legend. As far as "Kingdom of Heaven" I really liked the FEEL of the theatrical edition when I first saw it, but the plot was a mess. The Director's cut cleared that right up.

I'd love to see the sequels. CoR set up a very interesting story with a very interesting ending. My only real complaint about the movie is the unnecessary 'Riddick in prison' sequence in the middle of the movie. Just completely side-lined the story.

Vin Diesel can act. Watch Boilerroom and Find Me Guilty. It's just that his looks get him cast in dumbass, violent action flicks all the time. He could use a better agent, maybe - get him in a "real" movie for every big-budget paycheck movie he does.

If Babylon AD bombs, it will be because the summer season is chock-full of competently-made, entertaining action movies and there's no room for some bombastic, incoherent piece of garbage, not because Vin Diesel can't act. He's got more acting ability than the movies he usually makes requires.

It was a strange decision. They built this very detailed universe, brimming with interesting potential mythology, just to tell some run of the mill - and often silly - escape story.

That said, I'd give a sequel a look.

People like Snake, Riddick, etc. aren't just anti-heroes (which I, on principle, don't like or want, since my worldview is limited to clearly defined heroes and villains). They're *jerks*.

On the one hand, there are principled anti-heroes, such as Malcolm Reynolds (who I can at least respect), and on the other hand there are those who are just nihilistic, completely unlikable creeps, such as Snake, Riddick, Kerr Avon, etc.

I too enjoyed Pitch Black and the Chronicles of Riddick. However, I doubt another movie will ever see the light of day. That said, there is a approx. 50 minute short animated film called "Dark Fury" available that is quite good. Also, if you haven't checked out the PC version of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, do so. It's an amazing game filled with Vin Diesel motion capture and voice overs. It is very cinematic and worth every penny.
