Riddick 3 begins scouting locations

I think Chronicles just needed to be a little tighter, there were some neat ideas but some things were sloppy or just didn't quite come together. If they could do that I think a third film might work.

I've still never fully understood the mythology behind the Riddick series. Is there any definitive source that makes it all make sense?

I caught part of Chronicles of Riddick on TV. I had no idea it was a sequel to Pitch Black, to put it briefly; and the original film was... well, okay. (But really, Riddick was some sort of dark fantasy space epic or something, right? That wasn't Pitch Black.) It's not that surprising Vin Diesel is returning to his franchises of yesteryear to boot them up for future installments, though.

I haven't seen either Riddick film (yet), but I liked David Twohy's contributions to The Fugitive, and his writing/directing debut, The Arrival, is an awfully underrated science fiction movie (with brains, nonetheless!).

Just don't rent The Second Arrival (AKA The Arrival II) by mistake. The first film was made for no money. The second film was made with one quarter of the first film's budget. And the budget of Star Trek (2009) wouldn't have been able to help its piss-poor writing and acting.

But the first one with Charlie Sheen, Teri Polo, Ron Glass, and Richard Schiff (It's a West Wing pre-uinion!) is worth watching. The cinematographer is the same fellow who worked on Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

The Old Guard (Terminator, Predator, Rambo etc) are getting ... old. We need new heroes and stories. Riddick may not be it, but its good they are trying.

Is this the Underverse movie that Diesel was talking about back in the day?

Well, New Zealand is "down under," crazy toilets & all!

Somehow, it's going to bring the grand epic that was Chronicles back down to a "Pitch Black" budget?

It's not unthinkable, particularly if they're able to amortize a lot of the Necromonger props from the last movie. Patrick Tatopolous was able to make Underworld: Rise of the Lycans for about $30 million. Epics can be cheap if you shoot them judiciously.

Any word on whether Karl Urban or Thandie Newton is going to be coming back as Mr. & Mrs. Vaako? I think there's more to their story.

I agree that The Chronicles of Riddick never quite congealed as a complete movie. In particular, the Crematoria sequence in the middle of the film is something of an annoying distraction from the juicy Necromonger mythology that drew me into the story. It's this mythology that makes me so interested in seeing a 3rd film. I love that ending of Riddick leading the Necromongers. When I left the theater, I was far more interested in the possibilities of that storyline than I was in the movie I just saw.

I saw The Chronicles of Riddick before I saw Pitch Black. I agree that it's difficult to reconcile those 2 movies as being in the same universe. However, I enjoy both of them for what they are.

His writing/directing debut was Timescape, with Jeff Daniels also known as Grand Tour: Disaster in Time. I tracked it down after really enjoying both Riddick movies, it's pretty likeable really but nothing special.

I also enjoyed The Arrival, it did a good job with very little money. I have enjoyed most of the films he has directed, but he has written some stinkers like Terminal Velocity, which made me laugh in a few places, but that is all.

Imposter was pretty good, but then I am a sucker for anything Philip K. Dick.

I look forward to another Riddick movie, although wildly different from each other each film has some great concepts, and the universe they created in Chronicles was visually fascinating.

What I didn't "get" is why the planet in "Chronicles" didn't seem to have any defense forces of its own. These Necromongers, doesn't anyone ever fight back against them? Don't any of the planets they conquer have their own military that can retaliate? Is there no 'federation' (I'm guessing that there are multiple human worlds in the Riddickverse, including - presumably, I don't know if it's ever mentioned - Earth) that can defend a world that is being attacked?

From what I recall, the planet the Imam (Keith David) lived and Riddick first encountered the Necromongers on did have defenses, they were just totally inadequate.

The novelization does a pretty good job at explaining the Necromonger mythology and even includes appendixes at the back that has a timeline and a list of Lord Marshals. The myth part of the story is really what made me enjoy the movie...also visually it reminds me of Dune.

Does the novel explain my last question, why there apparently is no multi-system defense force (i.e. a counterpart of Starfleet) that Helion Prime could have called upon? Or did the Necromongers just attack too quickly for such a force to be able to respond?

Do you mean Ron Silver? :)

Um...of course I wrote Ron Silver! I knew something was wrong with that name. Who the hell is Ron Glass?

RE: Pingfah -- I haven't seen Timescape, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll give it a shot one of these days (and Imposter, which I was aware of, but haven't seen).

Riddick is an awesome character and after the odd ending of the second movie I can't wait for more! Bring it on!

Right! I must have had my wires crossed there. Too many different science fiction movies/shows swirling around at once in my head...
