Riddick 3 begins scouting locations

Well, this sucks in a way...

I wanted to know what happened next in the Necromonger saga.

This seems to be either a pre-PitchBlack story or an in-between PitchBlack and TCoR story.

I liked Pitch Black and will definitely see this. Hopefully that will mean that they can continue to show the Necromonger story. But if successful, they might decide that standalone Riddick-wins-against-the-planet horror stories is the only way to continue the series. Which would suck since it would mean never revisiting the TCoR storyline.

Yeah I'm saddened they are seemingly ignoring the last movie completely but happy at least it's being made.

Well it seems they will not be ignoring Chronicles. It may be a quick transition but Chronicles is not being ignored.
Picking up where 'Chronicles' left off, David Twohy's script has the anti-hero no longer wishing to be the Necromonger's Lord Marshal and making a deal with Lord Vaako to hand the position over to him in exchange for being returned to Furya.
Things turn to hell though with Riddick left for dead on a harsh planet with three moons, populated with nasty creatures like trisons and mud demons, and being hunted by two shipfuls of mercenaries.
Visions of a woman haunt him, while the character comes to realise that the only way to survive is to drop the more civilised traits he's picked up in recent films and return to his merciless hunter origins.

So some continuity is going to happen. That makes me happy and maybe one day we can return to other worlds within this universe. See what society in general lives like since Chronicles showed us at least two types of civilizations thus far.

Apparently there are two versions of the script floating around -- one version completely ignores the second installment and the most recent one, apparently the one they are filming -- acknowledges it. I read a particular draft of the script, with the working title Dead Man Stalking, and I thought it was pretty good. Definitely more in line with the first film than the second, all things considered.

Bummer. The universe they were trying to construct was the most interesting part of the second film, I thought--certainly more interesting than watching Vin Diesel swagger about being a bad-ass which, let's face it, is the sum of almost all the films he stars in.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I too will miss not knowing more about the Necromonger storyline.

I actually agreed with Vin going all out to get Judi Dench for the role of the (Furyan?) Elemental in the film - there was sooo much there - the Furyans, what do the Necromongers really believe, what is the Underverse and also since one of the characters (to remain nameless) dies, does that mean that they can still "exist" in the underverse?

Darn it all... I saw Pitch Black and while I liked it, I wasn't waiting to see the next version/sequel to that as much as TCoR.

Re: Riddick 3 synopsis announced

The general synopsis for Riddick 3 is as follows:
Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before.
Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge.
With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction."
Shooting on the film kick off later this year once Diesel wraps "Fast Five".

Fast Five aka Fast&Furious 5

Is that series already at #5?

I only watched #3.

Back to Riddick - There is some reference to Furya so that's nice. I hope this doesn't mean that the movie will feature nothing about the Necromongers... But it does seem to be returning to the faux-alien-horror roots.

I wonder if "own kind" refers do the Necromongers? Riddick became their leader at the end of the last film, and maybe he was then betrayed by them, similar to how some Necromongers conspired against the previous Lord Marshal.

Sounds like fun. :techman:

Re: Riddick 3 synopsis announced

I've said it before & I'll say it again: I really hope Karl Urban comes back as Vacco, even if it's a small part.

I'll be disappointed if we don't get to see at least some of Riddick as king of the Necromongers. The idea of Riddick being in charge of anything was what got me excited about the end of The Chronicles of Riddick.

I would have preferred it if they'd kept the Necro army in it somehow. That was such an original idea. Plus Karl Urban was hot in all that armour.
