Ricky Gervais to have brief cameo on US Office

I wasn't sure whether this should go in the other Gervais thread, but I thought it might be important enough for it's own thread. If the mods think it's not feel free to merge it with the other.

So...I just saw a link on Facebook to this: http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/01/ricky_gervais_will_cameo_on_am.html. Apparently Carell and Gervais wanted to have some kind of scene together before Carell makes his exit at (or slightly before?) the end of this season. Doesn't sound like it'll be much (will we even know he's supposed to be David Brent? The beard?) but it should be fun to see how they play this. I still have mixed feelings about what should happen with the Office after this year...it won't be the same without Michael Scott, but it should be fun to see the send of the writers have in store for him.

Anyway...if you don't want to read the article, the cameo will be in the cold open on the January 27th episode.

It'll be slightly before. There will be four episodes, if I recall correctly, post-Michael Scott.

Four episodes post-Scott?? I guess to introduce the newcomer? Hm. I'm skeptical Carell can be replaced, but would like to be pleasantly surprised.

I have never seen the(fake)US "Office" and am yet to believe that Ricky Gervais's David Brent can actually be replaced, let alone this imposter!

So Carell is really leaving, huh? Did NBC offer him a Sheen-sized salary? Because The Office will bomb without him and they literally have nothing else...

Given that you've never seen it, it follows naturally that you would not hold such a belief. Continued non-watching is unlikely to yield any further results.

All of NBC's sitcoms are "funny" in a lame way, the only truly funny one is Community and that will be the first to get canceled.

Micheal's exit will be before May Sweeps, I'm sure NBC is happy about that.

i rather they introduce someone new at the start of next year. That way they have the summer break to plan ahead for the new beginning.

Not sure if The Office without Michael Scott is a bad idea but one where one of the established cast isn't his replacement might be.

I've seen the British version and enjoyed it as well. The American one used most all of the concepts and due to the longevity made it's own niche. Isn't there a German or Australian version also? If so I'd be curious to see those.

Hope the Gervais cameo is well done!!

I believe there's an Israeli one too. There's probably a version in most countries.

Did anyone else read the rumour a while back that Harvey Keital could be the replacement?

It'll be... interesting, at least, to see the show try.

If anyone wants, they can read a little more about the post-Scott plans for the remainder of this season here and here.

The US Office has been on a substantial slide for the past several years, and Steve leaving will pretty much stake it for me. I look at the post-Carell show as an AfterMASH or Scrubs: Med School situation. I guess I'll finish out the season, but returning next year is a toss-up.

Loved the UK version, and I think the early US years are just as enjoyable, though certainly different in tone.

Honestly, I've been a big fan of The Office for years but I'm welcoming Carrell's exit. Michael, as a character, has become too over the top for me this season.. In past seasons, he's been annoyingly out of place/touch, often with hilarious results..

Frankly, he's become simply just annoying and most of his scenes give me that uncomfortable feeling.

The rest of the cast is strong and like Cheers did when Shelley Long exited, I think it will find its way to continued success for at least a couple more years.

I've been okay with Michael's actions for the most part, usually they're funny. The worst one though was when he wrecked Holly's Woody doll. That was just so mean and petty.

I've been thinking about who could take his place, presumably they'll be bringing in a new actor. If they were going to promote and existing cast member I'd quite like it to be Daryl. It seems logical, after all they've been pushing him to go farther in the company. It'd be a very contrasting style of management compared with Michael's as well.

Am I out of my mind or did they basically just announce Gervais would be replacing Carell??

"Any job openings"
"Not at the moment"
"Well just let me know"

And apparently Gervais earlier hinted that this episode would foreshadow who would be the new office manager when asked about rumours of his guest appearance.
