Richard Curtis to write an episode...

^ I love that scene! Actually that episode and the finale with the seven most evil men in the land are probably the only two of the six I really like. Blackadders II and III for me, although my overall favourite episode is definitely Private Plane from Goes Forth.

"I'll never know how you did that Baldrick, but it was bloody brilliant!"

I'd opt for pure DW historical now just for variety. I didn't enjoy Black Orchid at all.

Damn, there goes my hopes for a pure historical this season. :(
I wonder, EMH, if the kids audience today would really accept a pure historical? I'm disappointed that it's the one genre that RTD didn't do, but I understand that the audience that wants to be scared stupid behind the couch by the Daleks and the Cybermen probably wouldn't find human monsters as compelling.

One could argue that kids in the past didn't accept them either, which is why the BBC stopped doing them. Personally I don't see why they shouldn't do the odd one. surely it comes down to the writing, and the villain(s). If the story is good, and the guy/gal playing the nefarious bad guy is fun and larger than life, then I don't see why people wouldn't accept it. It would make a pleasant change sometimes...

That's one of the great urban legends of Doctor Who, that the pure historicals went away because they were lower rated. In reality, there was no appreciable difference in ratings between the pure historicals and the science fiction stories; producer Innes Lloyd simply didn't like doing them.

Which begs the question of why, Black Orchid excluded, no other producer has brought them back?

Perhaps you're right, but at the same time I still think it's possible to make human monsters scary and interesting to children. I think The Aztecs in particular did an excellent job of this (which happens to be my favorite First Doctor serial). I can only hope that some writer will be willing to take that risk (and Moffat allows them to take that risk).

Absolutely. Any story idea (well...most story ideas) can be interesting and engaging on all levels with the proper writing and acting.

Speaking of Blackadder, the "Ultimate Edition" DVD set with all the series, plus the Christmas Special (featuring a cameo by Nicola Bryant), Back and Forth, and all the other stuff -- along with lots of interviews with Richard Curtis -- was released in North America yesterday. (It's been out in the UK for a few months).

Ah, the scribe of Black Adder writing a Doctor Who episode! I can see it now...

The Doctor: You see, Amy, the ancient Greeks wrote in legend of a terrible container in which all the evils of the world were trapped. How prophetic they were. All they got wrong was the name. They called it 'Pandora's Box', when of course they meant 'Captain Jack's Trousers'.

New end credits?

His fourth regeneration was elected President on high,
Although that calling he did not heed.
When he regenerated just recently,
He went with a bow tie and a jacket made of tweed.

The Doctor, The Doctor,
A shame about that military boot.
The Doctor, The Doctor,
At least his new outfit is not a multi-colored suit.

The Doctor, The Doctor,
No regeneration goes as planned.
The Doctor, The Doctor,
Sometimes you even lose a hand.

Richard Curtis to write an episode. Wooah.

He and The Moff will own the entire season.

Cant wait, this sounds great.

The writer of Black Adder, Four Weddings, Love Actually, The Boat that Rocked, Vicar of dibley and the founder of comic Relief...

Bring it on.

I don't like his work, and he's part of that cliquey group of posh wankers that have made so much terrible television and films, but critics still rave about and others aspire to.

That said, Ben Elton is much worse. A cliff-pushing would be too good for him.

Completely proportional response, that.

Sorry, I was asked. I'm not usually given to strong dislike of people, but he's one of them.
