Richard Curtis to write an episode...

As a long time fan of Not the Nine O'Clock News & BlackAdder I welcome this news.

My god, he should be hung, drawn and quartered for Mr Bean and The Vicar of Dibley. And that is being overly generous.

I've never watched The Vicar of Dibley, but what was so bad about Mr Bean? I found most of it hilarious.

Black Adder meets Doctor Who? Best. Episode. Ever. :D
Only if Ben Elton is involved. Blackadder wasn't as good when it was Curtis solo.

However, if Curtis wrote an episode where Atkinson's Doctor met Smith's Doctor, that would be super-fab. :techman:

Hmmm....wouldn't that be cool? Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry on Doctor Who written by Richard Curtis? :D

When you have Fry and Laurie and Richard Curtis, who the hell even needs the Doctor at that point? ;)

Oh I don't know. I'll concede that the dialogue isn't as snappy, nor the characters of BlackAdder & Baldrick as well rounded and honed as in later series, but the first series still contains some of the most memorable and humorous lines in the entire run. I still crack up at things like the heaven & hell speech to the dying man in the Archbishop episode, or Percy's "famous blue stone of Galveston" (he says, pointing solemly towards the heavens) from the Spanish Infanta one.

And if the credits are anything to go by, Curtis wasn't entirely solo. Atkinson assisted him on series 1.

Richard Curtis was on Radio 2 this afternoon and mentioned that his episode would be in February.

Now if he did write the Daleks/Churchill episode (which fits in with his description of it featuring a famous historical figure) it looks like they're planing on starting a lot sooner next year. (Which makes sense since they didn't have to start by shooting the Xmas Special this time round.)

The new issue of Shortlist magazine has a piece with Curtis in it in which he reveals that his episode features Van Gogh. (Let's hope it doesn't try to suggest that it was aliens what drove him nuts.) So that's two celebrity historicals in the one series, which seems a bit odd, but there you go.

I guess this also confirms the rumor that his episode would be shot abroad.

I wouldn't hold your breath. We haven't had a pure historical since Black Orchid, and before that I think the last one was The Highlanders..

The trial in the one where Blackadder was accused of being a witch was pretty good, especially the "son of the devil" scene.

Grumbleduke!

The Witchsmeller Pursuivant. I like the bit in that where Edmund decides to go out amongst the peasants.

"Morning Prince Edmund"
"Morning peasant!"
"Morning Prince Edmund"
"Morning peasant!"
Baldrick suggests that Edmund should disguise himself. Blackadder puts on an eyepatch.
"Morning stranger"
"Morning friend"
"Morning stranger"
"Morning friend"
Peasant (to another peasant):"Who is that dark stranger?
"Oh, that'll be Prince Edmund."
