Rian Johnson trilogy canceled

if it was a guy who was an executive producer.. which most people don't even know what that means.. and he was just scheduling, arranging, checking the budgets and informing investors.. how would be a glorified secretary as well.. in both cases it';s hyperbole not sexist.. to say that she had no creative input into the storytelling of those films during her tenure with Spielberg

but if it makes you feel good to not actually address the issue and call me a sexist instead.. fine

In none of your posts have you shown any evidence that you understand how movies are made - much less why.

This demonstrates zero idea of how any of this works.

Yes, Executive Producer doesn't have a fixed definition. Sometimes an EP is just a credit given to a big name to come on board a project and reassure investors. Sometimes they're the one who gets the project moving and they hire other producers to handle various aspects of the production. Sometimes it's even like the EP version of the AP joke from State and Main...

WHITE: What's an associate producer credit?
SMITH: It's what you give to your secretary instead of a raise.

The term "producer" is overused and abused in film and TV, which is why the Producers Guild of America instituted a firm set of criteria in order for anyone to get a "pga" after their screen credit. EP has no such criteria.

EDIT TO ADD: Lucas is an odd case because in a typical case the Producer does not work for the Director. This is why Director's often have to fight to cut their cut released because (unless otherwise in their contract) the Producer typically has the final cut.

No Producer with a modern pga after their name is a "secretary" just following orders. That's insulting to a whole field. It's a whole lotta project management and decision making.

She was George's heir apparent and she also runs the day-to-day overhead of Lucasfilm. If that's a glorified secretary then it's a "secretary" almost on the same level as a governmental Cabinet Secretary. You don't have to like her at all but pretending that the head of Lucasfilm is just an empty suit is unbelievably ignorant.

Whether or not Kathleen Kennedy's and Rian Johnson's ideas of Star Wars are garbage is completely irrelevant to their jobs and responsibilities. She runs Lucasfilm. She may run a company now owned by Walt Disney but she exercises a great deal of independence and she still runs that company and oversees all its projects.

The fact of the matter is we don't know exactly how involved Kennedy is or cares to be. Some executives prefer to get out of the way and only inject themselves into the process when absolutely necessary. Some exert subtle influence by way to feedback and suggestion. Others get elbows deep in it. Throwing broad generalizations about whose role has what responsibility has little bearing on the reality of a given film production outside of any involved guild rules.

Why does every Star Wars topic end up being an argument about Kennedy or Mary Sue or diversity? Because a certain very vocal sector of fandom has decided those are problems, ignoring plenty of other issues. A lot of us griped about how white the original Star Wars trilogy was and how lacking in female characters and how they underused the one they did have: Leia. Apparently fixing those problems is now a problem for a certain sector of fandom who want to blame that for everything.

Kathleen Kennedy gets more undeserved hate than pumpkin spice, and pumpkin spice actually deserves more.

No, I really do hate pumpkin spice.

As in, detest it.

If it were human I'd make a youtube video about how awful it was.

Don't think I ever ate any mind you, I just hate it on principle.

To sum up @Flying Spaghetti Monster’s argument: Kathleen Kennedy is merely a “secretary” with no creative input yet is responsible for the creative “failures” of current day Star Wars while also not responsible for any of the successes, all while overseeing the most amount of Star Wars being produced ever. But, she would be better off if she just listened to a bunch of men here and on YouTube who have no actual experience in her field. BUT it’s not about her being a woman or diversity at all, it’s about “story”

lol.

So, perhaps a diversion to this enlightening and never - ending tangent - we can all speculate on a topic:

If the Rian Johnson trilogy is released, where would be the best place for him to focus his story telling talents?

He's an off-beat storyteller, so it is really hard to guess where his talents would be best utilized? Maybe a Force-enabled smuggler, the Star Wars underworld, and things along those lines.

Although the Canto Bight story line was a poorly conceived and shoehorned sideshow...I like the concept of a wealthy overclass being brought down by folks who realize their corrupting influence. The old Star Wars RPG source stuff talked about giant corporations like Cybot Galactica, Incom, and Kuat Drive Yards who designed, built and sold the various weapons of war used by the Empire and the Rebellion. That's a fertile story telling ground, for sure.

More stuff without Jedis.
I'd be quite satisfied if they excised the Jedi stuff permanently. I sincerely hope at the end of ROTS Part Deux that the Jedi are no longer a going concern.

@Nerys Myk - The only issue I see is that we grasp the basic outlines of Leia's story... there isn't much narrative to mine, unless they were to focus on some here-to-fore unknown wrinkle in her path to Rebellion.
