Alright, so I've decided to rewatch DS9 for the first time since its initial run . Sadly, DS9 has always been my neglected trek show and now I plan on fixing that lol. Now the thing is that I really don't feel like sitting through crap episodes and It has been so long since I've watched the show that I dont remember which episodes qualify as such. So, can anyone give me advice on which episodes I should just avoid? One I know about for sure is that retarted board game episode when they get transported into the game. Any other stinkers out there for me to be cautious of?

ds9 is so intricate and subtle that every episode is important, especially for characterization.

that being said, you can avoid
"take me out to the holosuite"
"one little ship"

any others?

I like both of those episodes!

Season 1 in general is a bit mediocre, which makes it a bit hard to get into. Move Along Home is a pretty bad episode, whilst others just aren't generally interesting (but in retrospect, never end up being as bad as Melora, The Muse, Let He Who Is Without Sin, Profit and Lace etc.)

Having said that, DS9 has many shows that, whilst not advancing any of the political threads that are ongoing, does a good job of character building. Something that happens in one random episode may inform a character later down the line. So I'm no help really!

I recently just did a total DS9 rewatch and was totally hooked by season 2. It surprised me how much I enjoyed it, as I don't remember being as interested originally.

Do not skip "one small ship," its one of my favs- its got everything- danger, humour, conflict... and a tiny runabout! Its awesomeness!

I think you can safely skip "Move along Home," "Take me out to the Holosuite," the A-plot of "Meridian," "Facination" ummm... I dunno... I don't want you to lose momentum... what if you just held the remote as you watch like I do in case you get boring parts? Every episodes has at least some scenes worth watching.

I quite liked 'Take me out to the holosuite', it was a fun departure considering the last ten or so episodes were the finale and we got to see some of the Sisko anger played out.

I've never been fond of 'Things Past', the end point for Odo was nice, but it it could have been delivered in a much more entertaining way. The episode on Risa ('Let he who is without sin'?) didn't really do much for me either and could easily be skipped as only Bashir-Leeta's breakup would directly effect ongoing stories.

I'm trying to convert my current girlfriend to the Trekworld with DS9 as she was unimpressed with early episodes and then put off completely by Voyager and Enterprise - I've found that hooking her in via Quark then introducing her to Season 5 has worked well as she's now hooked into the Dominion war angle. For her she was happy to skip the early stuff and have the blanks filled in.

Either that or she's humoring me as me ex wife and I were big fat nerds :|

I completely understand where you are coming from. For this very reason I have personally graded every episode over the last 6 years, watching each episode at least once in that time period.

The following list is of course entirely my personal opinion and I’m sure there are many people here who will disagree with it.

Having said that, must avoid turds are (episodes I have graded F or D):

Season 1
Q-less (F)
The Passenger (D+)
Move Along Home (F)
If Wishes Were Horses (D)
Dramatis Personae (D-)

Season 2
Rules of Acquisiton (D-)
Second Sight (D+)

Season 3
Meridian (F)
Fascination (F)
Prophet Motive (D)

Season 4
The Muse (F)

Season 5
The Assignment (D+)
Ferengi Love Songs (F)

Season6
The Reckoning (D+)
Profit and Lace (F--- Worst DS9 episode IMHO)

Season 7
The Emperor’s New Cloak (F)

There are a number of other episodes that aren’t that great (low C range) but at least they aren’t a 42 min cringe orgy. Overall though, DS9 has the highest concentration of good episodes (B to A+) ranging from 50% in season 1 to 60-75% in the other seasons.

Hope this helps.

Do you like TNG tho? Cuz then you might like the one about Q and Vash... maybe. Its a bit funny. (I prefer to be amused by TV then saddened etc.) Kinda the same for "If wishes were horses." Second Skin helps for Ties of Blood and Water- which is a very good episode...

In fact, I love TNG and I especially like Q episodes. However, Q-less doesn't work for me. I never liked Vash and her presence on DS9 was of no interest to me nor was Q's fixation with her. Add to that the fact that they had no idea for a Sisko-Q dynamic. I will admit Sisko's no nonsense attitude is much more difficult to work with here then Picard's or Janeway's more pompous styles. But, they should have realised this or be more creative.

That was "Second Sight" he marked off on, not "Second Skin"...

^^ Yeah, I over-read that but its a big difference!

Second Skin is a great episode in my view. Rated it with A- and I trurely recommend it.

This is good advice, and I agree with you on 'Profit and Lace', though I kinda enjoyed 'The Reckoning'.

Since everyone's tastes are different, just watch them all. If you find yourself in the middle of the episode and think it absolutely stinks, then go on to the next one.

I think there are quite a few people who like The Reckoning. I personally just never liked the concept of the par-wraiths. It cheapend the whole Bajoran religion for me. I prefer to see evil as a more indirect thing, like choices that people can make or attitudes they take and actions people can do. Swirling energy beings that take over humanoids are just too much like Japanese Manga for my taste.

Oops, sorry! I don't remember "Second Sight" either... where is my brain???
Thanks NG!

I didn't really care for the Reckoning though...

Ferengi episodes

I really find them atrociously boring :D :lol:

I classify Reckoning as a midway episode - some things it gets right, some it doesn't. I think it also benefits a bit after watching the rest of the season, specifically the finale.

That said, I love the Kira/Odo discussions about faith.

For me, I think pretty much all the episodes post-season 1 are good to see again. Sometimes, even in an otherwise lame episode they push a key plotline ahead by a step...and I like to see the whole thing unfold.

Season 1 has alot of one-offs that don't tie to anything that comes later. But after that, even many of the one-offs have references to the Dominion.

I recommend checking out Jammer's Reviews (http://www.jammersreviews.com/)

Aside from ratings and full-length reviews of every episode, he also has a handy Season Synopsis at the bottom of each season's page, which will give you a cursory review that should tell you whether or not you think it's worth watching. His review system is on a 4 star scale and most of DS9 is rated at 3 stars or higher, which is pretty good. I suggest using his site to do a bit of investigation and see if you really want to skip an episode or not.

Warning: If you don't want any spoilers, don't look at the reviews or the synopses. The season pages, however, only contain the rating and a 1-sentence plot description, so no harm done and still relatively useful. If you're worried about spoilers, maybe it would be a good idea to only read the descriptions of episodes you're pretty likely to skip anyway.
