Revisiting Babylon 5 on DVD....

Going through Babylon 5 again is always fun.

Mind you, this is what Doyle claims and he's not always the most reliable source.

Do you have some sort of credible source that calls his reliablity into question? If so I'd love to read/hear it. Otherwise. . . . . .

It's not possible to prove a negative but I've seen almost all of the rest of the B5 actors at numerous conventions and the 'Michael O'Hare leaving' question isn't exactly uncommon. NONE have ever said anything worse than they felt that he was uncomfortable in the part and struggled with his lines and the pace of episodic TV. Perhaps they're simply more professional than Doyle since I've also never seen any of them display the behavior that I've witnessed Jerry Doyle in which includes drunk, rude, crude and socially unacceptable. I don't consider him to be a credible source in the first place.

You've witnessed Jerry Doyle being "drunk, rude, crude and socially unacceptable"? Where/when was this??? I've never heard of it. As far as his reporting on what happened on the set v. the others, I find his honesty very refreshing rather than protecting his own like our politicians tend to do.

Drunk, on at least two occassions at local cons in the Orlando area. Rude and crude, pretty much every time I've seen him (regardless of whether there are children in the audience or not); though *some* of that may just be schtick. Socially unacceptable would have been certain behavior involving his girlfriend while about three feet from me at a memorial con for a departed cast member.

What you call refreshing honesty could well have damaged O'Hare's professional reputation and cost him work with no proof whatsoever.

So why is it you feel he's such an unimpeachable source?

I believe the episodes have been remastered because I now see no discrepencies between the live-action footage and the VFX sequences. Everything is in the same aspect ratio and everything looks equally crisp.

Agreed. I've had the DVD's since they came out, and my recent acquisition of a Vizio 32 inch 1080p flatscreen prompted me to revisit Babylon 5 (my second favorite sci-fi show right behind the various Star Treks) also. I'm a little further along than you, almost done with season four, and the series looks great on my new screen. One thing I noiced is that the DVD's were releaesd in the widescreen versions that were put out by the Sci-Fi channel years ago, a marked difference from the full screen my old tapes were. On this new TV however, they are back to being presented in full screen mode. The same thing with my ENTERPRISE DVD's. I sort of understand the differences in aspect ratios (1:85:1, 2:35:1, etc,) but exactly how it works is a little confusing.

Damn, I never heard about that. Thanks for the info. Oh, I never said he was an "unimpeachable source". I was asking for some reason to call his word into question as some here did. I reported something he said and his word was questioned. I was asking for a reason to question a persons word. Does that sound unreasonable?

Now if what Jerry said is true about O'Hare then perhaps he needs to find another line of work. One that perhaps does not put him in an authority position over female workers.

Not at all, though with two posts asking about it there did appear to be a bit of attitude. Going back to his being unreliable, I didn't mention it because I don't have any personal knowledge of what happened but Jerry has tried to work a few deals bringing back B5 in the past and he seems to like to talk to fans as though they're realistic when they're actually extremely preliminary. There's a moderately infamous public spat between him and JMS about getting fan's hopes up, some of which can be found here.

Ancient history. There hasn't been any sign of Michael O'Hare acting in TV or plays for a few years now. Also, while he was the lead actor, he wasn't actually in any kind of authority position such as a boss/worker on the show.

What is this rumor about O'Hare? I've never of this before. I always read he was a really nice guy and down to earth...

^^ See post #5 in this thread.

I think the thing I liked best about the DVDs were the JMS commentaries even though the did tend to be full of spoilers. I especially loved the Sleeping in Light commentary and the one he did with Mike Vejar (I forget the movie or episode).

Jan

^^ Unsubstantiated at best. And like most 'controversies' about a show off the air for 10 years, pretty pointless.

Now if somebody wanted to ask about 'Lyta's Lingerie', that would be more fun.

Jan

I've just started watching B5 again. About half way through the first season, and I have to say it holds up a lot better than I remember. There's not really any of those silly aliens/anomoly of the week episodes that riddled DS9's first season.

Well all this B5 talk has got me to buy the whole series and watch it again. It's been a long time, and I'm watching them with my girlfriend. She seems to like it so far. I love seeing her reactions to people like G'Kar (my favorite character). She says she hates that guy, and I've just smiled. Oh how I how love the characters on this show. Can't think of many shows that have this much character progression!

The first thing she said after seeing Kosh in the first episode was that he was cryptic. I said that she just summed up the Vorlon race perfectly!

I'll bite, what's Lyta's Lingerie? :p

Once upon a time, JMS came into his office to find a fancy box on his desk. Upon opening it, he found a bra and panty set with a brochure/catalogue advertising "Lyta's Lingerie" whereby Pat Tallman explained that once the director called the day a "wrap", she'd remove her 'wraps' and they'd be marked with the date and episode and made available for purchase, profits to benefit a children's charity. Both JMS and John Copeland had gotten 'samples' of her wares and were completely convinced that this was a genuine enterprise. Only after screwing up their courage to go Have A Talk With Her did they find out they'd been the victims of a practical joke. Much to the dismay of many fans, I'm sure.

JMS posted a photo of them in one of the script books.

Speaking of Lyta, who here knows what movie Patricia Tallman did a nude scene in? I'll give a hint - Ed Harris got top billing in it but denies he ever was in that movie AND it had a guest apperence (uncredited IIRC) by Stephen King.

I made it a summer vacation goal this year to finally sit down and watch all five seasons from start to finish. Always been a fan, but never watched it in order.

I finished it this morning. Damn, was that a good series. Must obtain the movies, lost tales, and Rangers.

This revisit has gotten me into an almost forgotten mindset. While working through the seasons I also want to get the films as well as Crusade even though it was shortlived.

I'll have to pull out my B5 T-shirt.
