Reusing SW EU, painful or joyful?

I would have been great to see characters like Mara Jade or Thrawn in the live action or even animated series. Hopefully we will get new characters that are good.

I wouldn't mind seeing those characters in at least some form of cameo even if they aren't front-and-center. But yes, I do like the idea of an animated series following their exploits, running in parallel with the movies. Definitely Mara Jade and Talon Karrde for me, two of the best characters to be introduced to the EU, who could easily sit in alongside the original cast. Could easily see them perhaps treading similar ground to Han had in his early days.

While not into the EU as much as some, I was sort of disappointed to hear about LSG's decision to make the EU an alternate non-canon continuity because there were some very interesting and unique storylines and characters in the EU that I will certainly miss (NJO, Thrawn, Mara Jade, the Solo children), but then I realize what a headache it would be for JJ and the LSG to come up with a coherent and consistent storyline for the new movies, as well as some of the junk that came from the EU that I'd rather never have heard of (i.e. Dark Empire, Children of the Jedi) and I realize that not being bound to the EU continuity was probably the wisest decision. I hope to see some nods to parts of the EU, but I don't really expect it to really be much more than that at this point. I feel like I've basically made my peace with the EU decision and am looking forward to the new universe of characters and continuity being created by LSG even though I haven't quite been blown away by some of the new content yet- though Rebels is starting to get better/more interesting and I felt even more reassured of the future of Star Wars after seeing the TFA teaser.

I wonder if they'll ever continue the "Legends" continuity in some form. Probably unlikely at this point, given the cancellation of the planned novel series Sword Of The Jedi and the build up to the new film. I think it could be kind of like how DC comics is revisiting the comic continuity before Flashpoint/The New 52 in their crossover this year.

Also regarding the prequels being ignored in EU by Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm, the Marvel Star Wars comics will be featuring Darth Vader returning to Geonosis and having some confrontation with the Battle Droids as revealed in the latest Marvel solicitations. As well as a series featuring a the origin of Rebel's jedi character set around the time of ROTS. http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58587

The problem with the old EU was never continuity, but rather an overall lack of quality control and getting good creators to work on the material. The new EU is just following in the footsteps of the old, the new comics are just retreading the previous material. At least Dark Horse had some editorial and quality control.

I was far more into the Star Wars comics than the novels, and even then the only titles I really cared about was Legacy and to a lesser extent Dawn of the Jedi. With those titles and their continuity concluded before Marvel regained the license, that pretty much ended my interest in anything other than onscreen material.

Yeah, I was initially enthused at the idea of an 'EU reboot', but they've already resorted to using the same authors. Hardly a bold new start.

I've purchased....nothing so far...

Why shouldn't they cherry-pick the old stories for good ideas and characters and planets? Shame to let it go it to waste, and most fans will probably enjoy any cool, nostalgic nods to the earlier books and comics.

Exactly. I have no problem with the idea at all, and in fact, hope it happens every now and then.

I like reusing EU elements in the new canon. Why let such wonderful material go to waste?

I would love to see all the EU clone troopers thrown back in. I'm more than willing to throw out Darth Caedus, though.

Also, despite the popular insinuation that Disney intends to completely ignore the prequels moving forward, prequel character Luminara Unduli was featured on Rebels.

Luminara Unduli debuted as a background character in Episode II and appeared on the 2008 The Clone Wars series.

It's not "reusing" it's "Using".

I think it is perfectly appropriate to use EU characters in the new films, as long as it not Waru.

both painful and joyful. joyful in the sense that the series grew beyond the films and had some awesome novels and cartoon. One carton in particular redeemed Anakin's character as it was painful to watch him in the prequels..so unlikeable ,he was.

Painful in the sense that the EU is not canon. So it means star wars did not grow much.

Yeah, Matt Lanter's Anakin was much better I think, and more believable as the friend Obi-Wan remembers in the OT.

Although a great deal of Clone Wars related material (comics, novels, the original miniseries cartoon) was released in the time between AOTC and ROTS, the Clone Wars CG cartoon (released in 2008) sort of overruled all of that (Although with some nods here and there)

CW Anakin had more charisma than the Christensen one.

There's also a Togruta-the species to which Ashoka and Shaak Ti belong-in the first issue of Marvel's Star Wars. So still not really ignoring things.
