Retro Review: Innocence

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
While Janeway greets an alien race, Tuvok’s shuttle crashes on one of their moons, where he meets imperiled children. Plot Summary: As...

When I watch this episode two things come to mind: The lady (engineer on Enterprise) who got assimilated in First Contact and the outtake where Tim Russ runs away from the cave, "Man, I'm not going in there!"

Nothing an especially brilliant episode.

The ageing backwards trope has never been that interesting (or original) to me and "Innocence" adds little. Russ and the kids do an OK job with the story and dialogue but it's all a tad forgettable and dull. Another shuttle lost (is anyone keeping count?) and another ensign Steve Whatever dies.

There isn't a great deal to redeem the episode but it's not all that bad. I can think of many that are worse. It's a mildly below average episode.

One thing I always hated was the condescending way Janeway talks to these people as though they're idiots who don't quite grasp how ageing works. We will protect these children from you and your backwards ways because we are superior hoo-mons. The total lack of respect they show for these aliens is bizarre considering they must encounter unique and even unpalatable cultures all the time. They're apparently trained in the art of cultural sensitivity yet act like it's perplexing that another alien culture could be so different. We've been exploring the universe for centuries but still think egg & chips is the height of civilisation.

Hux> welcome to 20th century writing limitations. Janeway or anyone with a high moral center and true intrigue in the mysteries of space life would not have been so disrespectful and short sided had they had a proper writer who by my definition of that is one who pushes beyond his or her 'training' in life. True thinking outside the box of our own self imposed morality.

The Vulcan and the alien Children. It could be worse I suppose. It could have been Neelix.

I skip over this one. It just doesn't interest me for whatever reason.

A definite skip over for me. I didn't appreciate the token Ensign death to make way for Tuvok to babysit the children in a way he might not have had said Ensign been present.

See, for me, episodes like this would be perfect for guest starring roles. Instead of the usual alien of the week stuff, the guest actor could play a deck 17 crew member stranded on the planet. Not only would this provide the writers an opportunity to be really creative and experimental but it would also allow them to play with the audiences expectations. Would they kill the character off or not? They could genuinely go either way without it causing any narrative problems.

Tuvok stranded with three kids on an alien moon. The concept works out fine and the interaction between Tuvok and the kids is great. An unexpected twist in the end gives extra points to the story.

Well, the way the aliens aged was a bit over the top to be honest but still a good episode.

I'll give it 4 points out of 5

I skipped this moment, by the way) Thanks)
