Remember the Star Wars Kid?

I don't get what you mean. I didn't think you were making a personal comment.

Sorry, I guess this part threw me:

Err, no. It's pretty fuckin clear that he was filming it himself. And while my comments are mostly sarcasic and tongue-in-cheek (11 years here, and a Charlie Brooker avatar, and some people still don't get it), the point still stands;

Probably reads a bit harsher than I intended, but I've noticed a disturbing trend recently, where some people seem to be under the mistaken impression that I take life as seriously as they do. :)

Sure, but in my view it shows a lack of class and responsibility to take something that you know will embarrass another person and put it on the Internet without their permission.

I'd agree, to a certain extent, although it can sometimes be hilarious. Depends on the person involved, and what the "embarrassing" thing is.

The fact that they added special effects to it just made it even less defensible.

It does, however, show a commitment scarcely seen in today's youth. An admirable quality. ;)

How about this, if you're going to tape yourself doing embarassing, stupid, shit then how about you remember to keep that tape! That's where this guy messed up he left the tape behind and it was found.

Anyway, the guy was an internet sensation. Sure his classmates made fun of him and stuff but the rest of the internet loved him. They even lobbied to try and get him into Episode 2!

^And he also had to have therapy, so I'm guessing it wasn't all roses and puppies for him.

Hypothetical situation, you go to work and bring lunch with you which you leave in the fridge. Lunchtime comes around and it's gone. Who is to blame?

Well, as I said, his classmate harped on him a lot. I doubt he went into therpay because of the internet and CGI'ing he got. But maybe he did.

Ummmm the person who took it? I'm not absolving the kids who did this, they deserved the lawsuit they got. Still, the kid left the tape behind which opened up the problems. I'm not sure the fridge analogy completely works. If I leave my car door unlocked with the keys in the ignition I'm partly to blame for my car getting stolen.

^It works because somebody found something that wasn't theirs and took it. There's no ambiguity here, the tape wasn't theirs to doctor or put on the Internet.

Another example, it's a warnable offence on here to hotlink to someone else's images in your posts. Why? Because it's not your image and not your bandwidth and it's not cool to assume that nobody will mind.

The people who took the tape are vastly more of assholes and at fault here than the SW-Kid. Vastly, like they're at 10,000 on the "responsible" scale and the kid is at, like 1 or 2.

Still, if I put my lunch in the community fridge at work I have to expect that someone "might" take it or tamper with it. If I leave my car unlocked with the keys on it I have to expect that someone "might" take it. If I put my pic up here I have to expect that somone "might" take it and tamper with it.

So the kid has to accept "some" responsiblity here. Again, his share of the blame is tiny compared to the dicks who took the tape and put it on the web, but still he did leave the tape behind.

But no-one is arguing that point. Of course the people who took the tape and messed with it are in the wrong, so I don't see why you feel the need to stress that fact.

Having said that, I agree with Trekker's sentiments. The kid is responsible for his own possessions. If he left something like that in a place where it could be found, then he shouldn't be too surprised when something like this happens.

^Trekker's post sounded like he was blaming the kid. Up until that point I was done with the thread as I had made my point.

Not blaming him, just pointing out that he should have been more careful with something he obviously didn't want other people to see.
I'm assuming that these kids didn't have to mount a huge operation to steal this tape from him, so he should have been more careful where he left it.

Hell, me and an old girlfriend made a tape once. I still have it, and I can guarantee that no fucker will ever find it. Point being, I wouldn't want anyone else watching it or putting it on the net, so it's my responsibility to keep it secured.

Now, sure, anyone who took my tape and uploaded it would be a dick, but I'd still have to concede that, if I'd been more careful with it, they wouldn't have had the opportunity to take it and be a dick.

Hooray! Another lawyer!

This tells me he is actually an idiot. Law is one of the worst job markets out there right now and for the foreseeable future.

For those who haven't seen the superior remastered version:

I don't know the history behind the tape. Did the kid throw it out or otherwise abandon it?
As I recall, he made the tape in a studio at his high school, using some found object as a light-saber, then either left the tape in the machine or left it some other place where it could easily be found by other students. He didn't make sure to keep it with him, at any rate.

He's not a lawyer yet, according to the article you linked.

Edit:

At least you've got the right video up now, though the other thing was pretty cool.

Oh how did you miss that opportunity..

I stand duly chastised. :o
