Remember back when the writers were called lazy for not being original

Remember back in 2006 when this film was first announced, and the word got out that this would be a prequel? Abrams and the writers were criticized for being too lazy to be able to think up an original story....

...fast forward to now, and this film has a totally original story, but now the writers are being criticized as being too lazy to have written a story that fit nicely into the pre-existing TOS world and used all the pre-existing TOS rules.

People are now saying that the alternate timeline is the lazy way out, and it would have been less lazy to write a story that conformed to the established TOS universe.

The only way to please everyone would be to have a crossover of every series that is 25 hours long and includes references to every episode and every character that has ever graced the screen as well as acknowledging every comic, novel, video game, and Kellogg's cereal box.

Can't please everybody!

Re: Remember back when the writers were called lazy for not being orig

Your point being?
My point being that the writers would be criticized by a certain faction no matter what they do...

...they are called too lazy in 2006 because they are making it too much like TOS, but then they are called lazy in 2009 for making it not enough like TOS.

I wouldn't be surprised if both criticisms came from the exact same fans.

:guffaw: It's funny because it's true.

Re: Remember back when the writers were called lazy for not being orig

Let's face it: It's hard to come up with an original story, period! There are only so many science fiction plots that can be written -- everything is a variation of the few limited themes that exist.

Given these constraints, the movie did a terrific job with plot and screenplay. There was plenty of creativity here.

if people are displeased by something that is not only a fitting homage to star trek but at the same time developing it forwards into a framework for an exciting future of unpredictable possiblities and evolution, well honestly, they deserve no sympathy (in my opinion ;)).

How is a story about a generic, vapid bad guy whose home is destroyed, blames someone who had absolutely nothing to do with it, comes across a time travel device, and instead of trying to save his people, enacts revenge against a bunch of irrelevant by-standards creative?

Please elaborate.

Re: Remember back when the writers were called lazy for not being orig

Well yeah, if you drop every single film down to it's very basics, you'll end up with 50 million similar stories.

It's not how creative the basic plot is, it's how creative the design team and the director uses that basic plot and adds onto it. STXI may have a very basic plot, but it was very creatively directed and it turned out to be a really well done movie.

You can't say the same for most of the prime timeline movies.

As you apparently haven't seen it yet I would recommend that you do!

ETA: although, why he doesn't help his own people is also a mystery tome!

Who? Spock?

¿Qué?

Exactly. This film has a thin plot, but great execution. TWoK had a thin plot but great execution; Same with FC. All of these films have one thing in common -- they were great fun to watch because of the witty and sharp character interactions. What else do you need from a film?

As you said, every film can be broken down to its basics and nitpicked to death until the are no such thing as good films.

Well, maybe not EVERY cereal box. You could leave a couple of those out.

This is true of anything that has a fanbase. I got an NBA forum and there's a certain faction that criticizes a team's move no matter whta they do. As do comic book forums, insider pro wrestling forums, the World of Warcraft forums, and every other hardcore fanbase out there. The only stuff that doesn't have this faction criticizing everytihng they do... is stuff which has no hardcore fanbase.

Aren't we past the point where this "point" is an actual point? What's next, is someone going to make a thread just to make the point that the sky is blue?

It shouldn't be on Vulcan, but it was in the movie.
