Remake This!

Space: Above and Beyond doesn't need to be remade but continued...although a remake would indeed be interesting to see.

I'd agree, but I think I'd prefer a remake a little more - although I'd like to keep some of the actors (McQueen and Ross) if possible, since those are two roles where age doesn't matter as much (and James Morrison doesn't seem to have aged anyway) but I'd like it to get out of the gate as good as it was when it went off-air. I love the later episodes but the first eight or so are pretty lame (except for Ray Butts). I'd like to more firmly establish some aspects of the mythology - like how their method of FTL travel works. I don't want it to be dry and technical, these are marines, not scientists, but some of the tech was a little muddled on the show. Likewise I'd try to explain from the get-go the role of the Space Aviator Cavalry and play up the "Maybe the Chigs aren't actually evil" angle from earlier on.

I'd also like some infantry characters in the regular mix. Seeing pilots regularly sent on infantry missions (which is just as much a military speciality) stretched martial credibility.

A lot of your ideas mirrored mine, but I remember that I added in the idea the George was a social drug user to get away from the pressures of work and home. I also added a government conspiracy aspect to the setting of Jetsons and why the world is covered with water. Spacely was somehow connected to it, in addition to a host of other shady dealings (which is why he promoted George; so he can have someone to pin it on in case he is ever caught).

Interesting. I was basing myself more on family dramas like Sopranos and Cane, but that would certainly heap it on poor George.

Trent, if you would, show us Ron Moore's...

Quantum Leap

Knight Rider

Mork and Mindy

Not familiar enough with those series; sorry.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I liked those story pitches Trent.

In regards to nuWho, the show is both a Remake & a Continuation.
It begins with the story of the Ninth Doctor and while this follows on from the past series, everything else is new in terms of production, budget, social attitude, & story outlooks. Semantics aside, it and nuBSG are the best realized models of bringing back long dead sci-fi TV concepts and I don't feel bad admitting that as I love them both for what they are.

Don't get hung up on descriptors, just realize that they're groundbreaking and leave it at that. (Note: This doesn't mean that either show is "perfect".)

The reason I selected nuWho as an example is that lots of shows (like Space: Above & Beyond for example) really just needed to be updated & followed through on creatively not completely gutted of original premise and repurposed.

I'd love to see an updated version of Quantum Leap that follows on the adventures of Sam & Al with all new characters. I remember hearing something about this way back when on Sci-Fi, but nothing ever came of it.

Also Sliders would be a good fit for total restart learning from the mistakes of the last 3 or 4 seasons of that show.

I think Earth 2 and V would be good candidates for a "do-over." Both had some really great ideas and interesting characters--and then proceeded to do NOTHING with them, or ruin them entirely.

Duckula

Seriously, have him killed off on the opening episode, flash forward to the time of the next ritual and have Duckula the 19th emerge as a proper Vampire this time, but female.

Earth 2 was the one with Clancy Brown, right? I watched the premiere on DVD - ugh. But an interesting concept.

The ugh isn't directed at Clancy Brown, btw. He was one of the few worthwhile elements.

I have always wanted to see a live action remake of Star Blazers, the thought of the battle with the comet empire with today CGI would be very appealing.

I'd like to see a remake of The Last Starfighter myself, with shiny new CG graphics. And no BSG-ization please.

*cough* Don't you mean Space Battleship Yamato? :)
Don't know about live action, but a new CG series would be great.
Closest we'll probably ever get though will be the PS2 game version.

V is a good suggestion. That was an interesting premise which was completely wrecked.

Chiming in on this, I was thinking about ways to reboot Dark Shadows, and, although the primetime soap genre has seen a resurgence recently thanks to Desperate Housewives, the base concept of Dark Shadows strikes me as really very suited to a serial drama akin to shows like Heroes, Lost, and the cancelled series Vanished (from 3 years ago) and Wolf Lake (from 6 years ago). However, despite the fact that I think the concept fits the serial drama genre, I'm having some problems figuring out exactly how you'd structure DS as a serial drama in terms of characters and an ongoing narrative, probably because I'm only peripherally familiar with the series despite having an interest in it. Thoughts?

Aren't they making a Dark Shadows movie with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton directing? I would re-make Smallville...and perhaps Lois and Clark but the later would be a sequel series to the remade Smallville.

Yeah, Depp and Burton are going to revamp DS for the big screen, but, as I've said before, I wholeheartedly believe that there's more than one way to tell any given story (something borne out by the recent reboot of The Incredible Hulk film franchise, as well as the remakes of BSG, Bionic Woman, and Knight Rider which have come or will be coming down the pike).

Vis a vis Smallville, I'm interested in hearing how you'd reboot the series (even though it's still ongoing), and what you'd do differently.

How would I remake Smallville? Boy oh boy...that is an intriguing question Digific! I will have to spend a couple of days actually thinking about this one before posting an answer. First and foremost though I would take out most of the crap drama and angst that seems to go on and make it more realistic if possible. Meaning that these characters relationships would go through experiences that would progress and enable them to evolve as characters rather than be determental to their progression. As I've stated on other Smallville threads one of my biggest problems with the series is that I think the writers have stuck too long with their motto and original series proposal. These characters maybe comic book characters but they need to expand and grow just like anyone else. They seem stuck in a temporal casuality loop and its stifling the quality of the TV series, not to mention the actors ability to work as well. I would get rid of all that and budget constraints asides would take the kid gloves off. This show has tons of potential to do a lot of cool stuff but instead continues to tease its audience and that can only go so far before you loose this audience. I'll have to think a couple of days before retooling this and get back here.

In my remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, Klaatue and Gort would announce the aliens' policy was regime change in the US. That would give the audience a new perspective, which is one of the goals of serious SF.

I came up with a proposal for a sequel SeaQuest series that a couple of people liked, just search for SeaQuest and scroll through the thread.

Another series I'd like to see a BSG-style reboot of is Mutant X. There was so much promise in that (Avi Arad was heavily involved) but it devolved into mutant of the week. I would like to have seen an X-men style war brewing between mutants and normals.
