Relativity, Relativity, Relativity!!

OK by now some regulars here might know of my opinion that Voyager is my least fav series, but that Voyager spawned quite a number of ST's best eps of all time, case in point: Relativity!! I love this episode, right from the time travel elements , down to the starship (a UFP timeship!) and Braxxton's dialogue.

This is one of my favorite episodes as well
I love everything about it....the idea of it is just so intriguing

Oh I loved Relativity. Time travel was used as a crux a little too often, but I loved the humour in the episode. Janeway was pretty fed up and confused by the end of it all, it was hilarious.

Yep, great episode. The one thing I didn't like was Braxton being able to remember getting stranded on 20th century Earth. That doesn't clock with the ending of Future's End.

^ That was explained in the episode though that he was 'reintegrated' upon returning to his own time.

I always liked Relativity because it gave us some very cool scenes including - among others - our first look at Utopia Planitia.

I liked Relativity. It did give me a headache though with it's time travelling hocus pocus. But a pretty good episode..not my favorite but all in all not bad episode.

And it was nice to see Mars. I don't believe I've seen Mars on trek before this episode. Yes Enterprise did it again later.

Always look forward to Relativity; I assume people were seeing it on Spike on Friday. (I have all the VOY DVD's, but I still like to watch the eps on Spike with the TiVo. I am so lazy.)

Seven always looks dynamite in Science teal; the time ship is gorgeous; and I can see why time travel gives Janeway a headache. I get one trying to keep track in this ep.

Plus, that fellow, second in command -- I think he's got a thing for Seven. I always wanted to hear him say something admiring about her.

I like in the end he's like (not quoted exactly) we have 4 other Braxton's each from different time periods....they'll be reintegrated for the trial
sortof minority reportish.....im arresting you for a crime you're going to commit
the whole relativity ship was freakin awesome!!!!

I didn't care much for the "you will be arrested for a crime you haven't committed yet" angle.

And it was nice to see Mars. I don't believe I've seen Mars on trek before this episode. Yes Enterprise did it again later.

We had, briefly, seen it on TNG's Parallels, but it was a ground base constructing a Galaxy Class Starship.

It's one of my favorite time travel episodes because even the characters get headaches trying to follow it. It's almost a parody of the time travel episode that way.

Actually if you have a society where time travel is possible, a law that enables the capture and conviction of criminals during any period in relative time makes sense to me - otherwise it would be too easy to get away with any kind of crime if you have access to a time travel device.

The Braxton of the future may have been innocent, however in his future he will attempt to commit a crime in his past, forcing his capture and punishment in the present time to prevent the very crime he is about to commit from happening in the future - and thus preventing him being able to commit the crime in the first place.

A headache or just some fuzzy logic?

Actually, this is one of my favorite Voyager episodes. And I have no trouble with Braxton being arrested for a crime he hadn't committed yet. In the century he's from, time is understood to be more like a river with eddys and currents, and not linear from A to B.

For anyone who does have trouble with this concept, I recommend reading Up the Line by Robert Silverberg. It's a story about a young man who becomes a Time Courier -- his job is to escort groups of tourists back in time to see some of history's highlights in the Byzantine Empire. Naturally, he manages to get into some interesting situations while trying to avoid trouble...

The problem with that is the assumption that a person who might commit a crime can't be given a reason to do it. It's clear that Future Braxton was suffering from psychosis and blamed Voyager for it, while his present counterpart was not. Are we to assume that with the technology to travel through time, there's no form of medical or psychiatric treatment that Braxton could use?

Time travel tends to give me a headache anyway. :D But even with the ability to go through time, it seems to me like one would still have a large number of choices for any set of variables. Therefore you can't simply arrest someone for a crime they haven't comitted yet, because that might not be the only way to prevent it. Kind of like how Picard said in AGT that he preferred to look on the future as not being set in stone, and to not assume he would become ill just because Q showed him that in one future.

I agree which is one of the reasons I just can't get into this episode.

I totally love the USS Relativity itself. It's probably my favorite Federation Starfleet ship ever. It's nice to know that Fed tech will turn out to look this...cool...by the 29th century. :bolian:

Also in BoBW 2 with the Mars Defense Perimeter.

Which wasn't much of a perimeter, just three tiny nats that the borg cube swatted way without even stopping
