Reflections on SG1

I definitely loved the way Earth progressed in technology and influence as the show went along. They started out as worthless nobodies who had to run away from the Gou'ald with no technology... then they started taking out System Lords by sheer luck... then they get fighters... then they get a battleship... then they have a bunch...

Though I do prefer the days when they were little fish and the Tok'Ra were so much more important.

I loved SG1 but it did fall apart once RDA left the show; it kind of screwed up the dynamic of the characters. That's one thing I really enjoyed: the chemistry of the main cast. However, my favorite character was, by far, Daniel. I am always drawn to the scholarly characters--I really loved his good-natured, outsider (non-military) perspective.

I don't think any of the later shows in the franchise ever captured the spirit of the original. I never really had any affection for Atlantis or SG:U. They just seemed to fall short and I never connected with any of the characters.

Daniel and Teal'c were always my favorite SG-1 characters, so while I missed Jack when RDA stepped aside I didn't miss him that much, especially in those last couple of seasons when RDA was clearly bored. I really enjoyed the last two seasons and thought that Claudia Black, Ben Browder, and the Ori storyline gave the show a much-needed shot in the arm, but I wish Sci-Fi had stuck with their original plan to let SG-1 end after Season Eight, and have the stuff after that happen in that Stargate Command spinoff. I'm pretty sure SGC would have lasted longer than two seasons. :sigh:

I think that once Browder was in, and they had their own, distinct storyline, established, Season 9 really took off.

I also think that Browder and Shanks had great chemistry of their own making that made their interactions very fun and interesting to watch. There was a lot of understated sarcasm that was introduced between the two.

While I missed RDA a lot, I think Browder did a good job keeping things going. I just think he should have spearheaded Stargate Command as a show.

Thanks for all your thoughts, good to hear them... to reply to just a few...

My big gripe with the later seasons is the whole Vala's baby storyline. Every time a magical child appears in a show it just kills things. (looking at you, V and Falling Skies)

That was a bit lame, but I think due to Claudia Black's pregnancy so I'll give them some leeway. But every time you see her daughter you just have to wait for "Hello mother". Just like every time Q comes onto screen you have to have "Q!" Lots of stating names and relationships at each other in shows like this.

The only really weak season was the one where Jonas replaced Daniel ... his replacement was bland and overall it just wasn't as good.

I don't care for your opinion there! :p

i have a lot of affection for Season 9 and Season 10. i know a lot of fans don't. i thought the Ori were interesting and frankly i was getting very tired of Goa'uld.

Oh yeah boy were they due to be retired! I like B'aul (spl) but even he was brought back too much. Let it lie.

Yes, it was really seeing them take to the galaxy-wide stage, and seeing the effects of their actions - like the Jaffa being free but then they may not do good things with freedom...

My favorite episode was the Other Guys. It was so fun to have well meaning amateurs save the day.

That episode featured John Billingsley-and references to Trek and Trek fandom!

It's weird how time/mood change things, as I remember liking that originally but found it just a bit puerile this time. It undermined the danger of the situations they go in.

I noticed that with the introduction of the Prometheus, the franchise was being turned into Trek. They even used beaming!

I was happy to have Daniel back, even if it did take away a bit from his death, but I do wish we'd seen Jonas more after that, other than in the one later episode he appeared in. They didn't quite Pulaski him, but they came pretty close.

Yeah. At the very least, I wish he'd been on one of the alternate SG-1s in "Ripple Effect." Even if we didn't see him, a name drop would have been nice.

While I prefer Daniel as a character, I was kinda bummed out that Jonas got so screwed.

^He appeared in the episodes "The Other Guys" and "Avenger 2.0"

God, I hated "Avenger 2.0." It seems like every show that I love insists on doing one really terrible episode that I can never bear to rewatch. (Doctor Who did "Love & Monsters." Angel did "She." Stargate Atlantis did "Irresistible," "Irresponsible," & "Michael.")

I didn't exactly miss Jonas, I was glad to see him go.

As to Nemec, I'd never given any thought to him being better looking than Shanks, but now that I do.......REALLY ?

I loved SGU - I'd love one last TV movie or miniseries. Jack still in charge with Daniel and Co. plus some Atlantis crew getting the Universe cast back...

Count me among those who liked Jonas. I didn't like him as much as I liked Daniel, but he was a pretty decent character who filled in well.

I thought SG1 was the most consistly good sci-fi series ever, with writers like Robert C Cooper and directors like Martin Wood and Peter Deluise the show really soared. the elvolution of the show into a ship based space series was nicely done. And of course I loved O'Neill's qips over the years.

I noticed that with the introduction of the Prometheus, the franchise was being turned into Trek. They even used beaming!

Although, I found the ship-based Stargate episodes (of any series) pulled off the Star Trek in the modern day vibe a lot better than Enterprise did.

I miss Stargate sometimes. By the latter seasons of Atlantis and the start of Universe, the world-building and mythology and politics stuff they had created was so rich...I loved it. Even if they did "Trek-ify" the show, I think it was necessary to show Earth becoming a true power-broker in the game, with tech to back it up.

I did enjoy seasons 9 & 10 of SG-1 and liked the additions to the cast and the Ori. I enjoyed Continuum and wish we had gotten the 3rd movie.

I agree. I found that Stargate felt far more organic in its growth and development in terms of world building, and the consequences of different technology.

Heck, the beaming was something they received from the Asgard and not until I think season 5.

I always enjoyed the design of the ships from Earth on Stargate.

I loved SG-1 and Atlantis, and while I did enjoy SGU it wasn't as good as the other two.
I didn't come into SG-1 until Season 7, but I quickly grew to love it. I thought the show had a great cast, and even like the cast changes over the years. Since I had only seen him for a season or two, I wasn't as attatched to Jack as a lot of people, wasn't to upset when he left. I had already watched Farscape when SG-1 brought in Browder and Black, and I thought they were great on SG-1 too.
I really loved the universe that built up over the years. I thought it really developed well, and it was nice to see a universe where they actually made drastic changes to the status quo.
I enjoyed the Ori story a lot. It wasn't as quite as good as the Gau'uld, but I still really enjoyed it.
I thought both movies were good. I've rewatched them both several times.
I did watch some of the earlier seasons over the years, and I thought that the show did change a lot over the years, but was still pretty enjoyable through most of it's run. The first season was a little rough, but that tends to be the case with most shows. I still haven't seen any of Season 6, but I plan on doing going back to a rewatch I started with Season 1 a few months ago.

^ I would have to disagree. I loved SG1, kinda liked Atlantis, but found SG:U to generally be trying far too hard to be "dark;" I recall people derisively calling it "Stargate: Galactica," and I felt that was rather accurate. I think it had potential but the "music video endings" were painfully cliched, the motivations of many of the characters were completely all over the map, and the "invisible aliens took my baby" plotline was fairly horrible.

Your mileage may vary, of course, but I can't say that SG:U was all that enjoyable for me.

i didn't like SG: U either. it was just bits of BSG, Voyager, Lost in Space and The Last Starfighter mixed together.

SG:U was a lot of missed potential. I lost interest 2/3 through the second season, but it did do some interesting things (again, a lot of it had to do with the very rich world-building the Stargate people had developed up to that point). I liked the galactic politics, Homeworld Command, the communication stones (and the complications with them)...but yes, it was "LostGate: Galactica" most of the time. I still haven't seen how it ended.
