Having had my wrists slapped for resurrecting an old thread (apologies for that - so used to forums where the rule is to find an applicable thread rather than start a new one but it's on me for not reviewing the rules) so here is a new thread as I want to have a moan about Worf in this episode.

Worf doesn't half take the piss here. "oh Captain, yeah so, how you doing? Yeah, you know that stuff that's going down with the Klingons? I know it's short notice but can I have some time off to get involved with a personal matter?"

I have worked with those kinds of people and they suck! Just gallivanting off at the last second leaving us fools to cover their work. Does the Fed not have a HR policy on taking leave?

And then, to add insult to injury, he implores Picard, his boss, to get involved in the civil war, something Picard has already said he doesn't want to, so Worf just throws his dummy out the pram and quits on the spot? Not even a, "Yo cap, can we just have a chat in private?"!

Does Starfleet not have mandatory notice periods? Does his calling out Picard in front of the leader of the Klingons Empire count as gross insubordination and therefore he gets dismissed straight away, thus allowing him to do one? Because if that is the case then the bloody guard of honour he gets is absolute bull.

Now speaking of people in this episode who display flagrant insubordination and generally tw*ttery, Hobson on the Sutcliffe can go do one. Top quality racism, slags off his new boss, what a prick!

I always thought it was strange how at the end Picard just welcomes Worf back. Of course he had to for TV reasons but in reality would you when hes resigned his post?

So despite Picard saying you cant have leave, and Worf then quitting, in reality Worf gets his way and just has leave.

I would expect in reality Picard may have had him back but reduce him to an Ensign or something doing some crappy job rather than walking straight back into the bridge role he quit. Obviously in TV land its not going to happen, even Tom Paris being reduced to ensign didnt really make a difference to his role in the show.

Picard is very lenient on his staff, Riker was in the brigg for maybe 15 minutes before Picard just sets him free in the Pegasus.

As I was reading your post, the incident with Tom Paris came to mind. A very good point.

I get that the point if it is that Worf is abiding by his sense of honour and all that but it does seem awfully contrived to not have any repercussions, even if he was right in his instincts to get involved.

All a little bit "ends justify the means" - which is basically the discussion Picard has with Data after Data disobeys orders on the Sutherland in part 2.

Obviously this is all done for the sake of drama but surely a comment by Data that any communication to the Ent could be intercepted and give away his plan to the Romulans would have made more logical sense.

Quite clearly the bureaucracy of the 24th Century is as slow as that of the 21st Century, the paperwork re: Worf's resignation hadn't been processed yet. Or Picard used the little known seldom used reserve activation clause.

I really enjoyed the Data stuff on the Sutherland. At least Data puts himself forward for disciplinary action, and Picard has a conversation with him about it.

Worf just says Can i come back, and Picard says yeah without hesitation. Worf gets away with it so easy i almost imagine a deleted scene when they get back on board with Picard asking Worf to head straight to the bridge or file a report and Worf says 'later man, im off to the holodeck' and Picard says 'ok whenever you are ready Mr Worf, no rush'

Hmm... maybe they should have taken Worf off the show and worked out a way to bring him back in Unification. (Don't recall offhand if he had any important episodes in between).

They wouldn't do it of course. Or if they had, they would've not been able to restrain from announcing his return to the press.
