Recommended episodes to go with the books

So here's the thing. I have all the series on DVD (well, not Voyager but for the sake of this post it doesn't matter.

Thing is, I have no time to watch them all from the start, so recently I've take to watching a few related episodes in advance of starting a new novel, to put me in the mood and mindset of the characters.

So I thought it might be worth starting a list of recommended viewing to go with each novel. Obviously some novels follow-up on certain episodes directly, others feature guest stars from a couple of episodes, others are more character studies which might resonate with certain character-based episodes, even if there's no direct link.

I'll edit stuff into this post to keep a list, and will start with a few things I read recently:

TNG: Vendetta
The Doomsday Machine (TOS)
Best of Both Worlds (TNG)

TNG: The A Time To... series
The Way of the Warrior (DS9)
Star Trek: Insurrection
What You Leave Behind (DS9)
Star Trek: Nemesis

TNG: Resistance
Star Trek: First Contact
Endgame (VOY)

If you're doing that anyhow, I'd recommend TNG's two-part "Birthright" and DS9's "Sons of Mogh" before reading A Burning House.

Before reading Fearful Symmetry (and Warpath to an extent) I recommend watching DS9 Second Skin.

If you're reading Forged in Fire, it should be sandwiched between ENT's "Affliction" and "Divergence" (watched before reading) and DS9's "Blood Oath" (watched after reading).

Star Trek: Nemesis

Articles of the Federation
...nope, not touching that one with a ten-foot pole... ;)

And of course there are the relaunches. where you should watch all of that series along with the movies of that series.

Cheers guys, awesome info.

I heard somewhere that to understand Articles of the Federation you had to watch all the Trek episodes plus the entirety of Farscape and Peter Brook's The Persecution And Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat As Performed By The Inmates Of The Asylum Of Charenton Under The Direction Of The Marquis De Sade. Is this not true then?

I'm really glad you're doing this. Let's try to make this a definitive list as possible because I think this could be really helpful to people. Here's my first contribution.

Terok Nor Trilogy (Day of the Vipers, Night of the Wolves, Dawn of the Eagles)

"Ensign Ro" (TNG)
"Duet" (DS9)
"Cardassians" (DS9)
"Profit and Loss" (DS9)
"Shakkar" (DS9)
"
The Collaborator" (DS9)
"Wrongs Darker than Death or Night" (DS9)

I'm sure there are more, but that's what occurs off the top of my head. Please feel free to add if anyone has suggestions.

a Few more:

Enterprise: The Good That Men Do
United (ENT)
Terra Prime (ENT)
These are the Voayges (ENT)

Voyager: Dark Matters trilogy
Eye of the Needle (VOY)

Voyager: String Theory trilogy
Caretaker (VOY)
Cold Fire (VOY)
Fury (VOY)

I'd also watch the other four episodes around United and Terra Prime, myself.

That's an old and tired joke around here. The truth is, while AotF takes its cues from several books, episodes and movies, everything that you need to know is supplied in the story.

All of that, along with Curious George and the Rocket.

Oh, and Trek or Treat.

All of that, along with Curious George and the Rocket.

As a card-carrying librarian, union regs require me to point out that Rocket is an abbreviated version of Curious George Gets a Medal. I actually prefer Rocket as a title because 1) it's hella more exciting and 2) it's not a SPOILER. Geeze. Star Wars: Episode V: Luke Learns Vader Is His Father, anyone?

I just thought of a couple more things to add to the list:
VAN: Harbinger
Where No Man Has Gone Before (TOS)

Vader is Luke's father?!?!?!?!?! SPOILER!

How about The Left Hand Of Destiny? I never read those, and I'm thinking about getting around to it soon. What should I catch up on?

Generally speaking I'd say season 7 of DS9. But mostly the ones dealing directly with the Dominion War and Worf/Martok/Gowron.

And The S4 premiere that introduced Worf to the series (I'm having a brain-fart as to the title of the ep) as that's the ep in which we meet Martok's son, Drex.

Oh is there a time limit on editing posts? Was going to just keep the first one up to date with suggestions but the button has disappeared. I'll just post updates as a new post if so but probably won't do so as regularly as don't want to spam the thread every day.
