Recommend an alcoholic drink for me?

I'm not a fan of fruity alcoholic drinks (unless you are counting wine), I find it safer to know I am actually drinking alcohol when I drink it, bad things happen otherwise.

Like random children showing up 9 months later.... :shifty:

Or waking up next to me handcuffed to the bed.

But seriously, I would recommend something like a Long Island Ice Tea or an Amaretto Sour. They do not taste like alcohol and they are not really to fruity. A margarita is also good too!

I don't like the smell or taste of beer, and tasting alcohol in wine or other drinks makes me do a passable impersonation of Lucille Ball's "vita-meata-vega-min" shtick."

I do like the flavored malt drinks, like Smirnoff Ice--which my friends insist is not a "real" drink. For wine, I only like the sweet muscat/moscato--which are too sweet for many people. Other than that, I only like two drinks:

Shirley Temple--coke and grenadine (non-alcoholic)

Long Island Ice Tea--gin, rum, triple sec, and vodka; filled with sweet and sour and and touch of coke for color. Yeah, lots of alcohol there, but if it's made "right" (i.e., enough sweet and sour so I don't taste the alcohol), it's lemonadey. And confuses my friends as it's pretty much opposite my other favorite drink.

what do you call it?

The webtender calls it Green Hell #2 and suggests listening to reggae while drinking it -iirc.

Yes indeed, Holdfast, floating Galliano on top is what makes a Screwdriver into a Harvey Wallbanger which is a nice variation of the drink if you ask me.

I've never really liked beer all that much. But I'm a big fan of a good scotch. I also really like jagermeister which a lot of people don't really seem to. I like it on the rocks similar to how I drink my scotch.

Neat or even on the rocks spirits generally do nothing for me - the heat of the alcohol is just too much for me. I like some strong fortified wines - port, sherry, etc. But once the proof goes higher than that, I start to lose interest unless it's a cocktail.

For wine, I only like the sweet muscat/moscato--which are too sweet for many people.

If you're interested in spreading your wine wings a little, you could progress to an auslese Riesling. Still sweet but not as much as a true dessert wine. Then, if you like that, try a spatlese Riesling which will move you a little further towards dry. Then go for a light kabinett to give you a taste for low-alcohol fruity but clear freshness, and after that you'll find you have a taste for a lot of of different wines with fresher notes.

I started on alcohol in my early 20's, and had never liked the smell or taste of alcohol either. I was introduced to Malibu and pineapple juice, and away I went. It was very mild and quite delicious. And if you like cranberry juice, a good vodka improves it immensely. Those are good baby drinks to start on I'd say.

However, having thought about it, I never was missing anything. A good buzz that comes from pure feelings, and enjoyment of special moments cannot be beaten by alcohol. In fact, alcohol could make you miss the lovely details of life by dulling your senses. Our body is a wonderful drug store in itself, and can much better produce these sensations than some side-effect ridden substance you pour down your throat.

Since you say you're not a drinker, and alcohol abuse runs in your family, I would approach with extreme caution. Alcohol affects each person's system slightly differenty, and you won't know which category you'll fall into until you try it. Some people just feel an not very pleasant sensation of light-headedness, while others at the other extreme feel as though they have been transported to a transcendental universe - those will probably become the soon to be abusers of the substance if they don't watch it.

I have decided to go back to being teetotal myself, as I have had some issues with alcohol, stomach problems (I had a sensitive stomach to begin with), weight gain, and a much lighter pocket! It's really not the healthiest thing to do to your system, even in small quantities. It kills the good bacteria in your intestines, and any supposed beneficial anti-oxidants it contains don't even approach those found in tea.

Alcohol in moderation is okay, but it's not actually necessary. And if you don't like it to begin with, I don't see why you should force yourself to find something you like! I tend to view alcohol as the lazy persons happy buzz. You can reproduce that dozens fold by doing something you love, even taking some exercise beats it.

Think it through, I say, you don't have to follow the herd.

Well as someone who has drunk a lot, but doesn't really like the taste of alcohol I can help you out. Stay away from beer and wine. No matter what people tell you about the fruity or smoky or oaky or smooth taste of beer and wine they all actually taste like alcohol. If you want something like a beer that you can drink a lot of but not get really drunk try a fruit based cider. Or a wine cooler. Yes people will laugh at you and ask you where your Member's Only jacket is, but they actually taste really good.

As far as mixed drinks you'll want something really fruity like a Midori Sour(my favorite) or straight alcohol in a dilutant like fruit juice or soda. You can control the amount of alcohol you put into these drinks or tell the bartender to make it really weak. I usually have a bourbon and coke. I actually tend to like mine rather strong so you may develop a taste for it once you slowly get used to it.

I always liked the various silly drink puns you can have with the naming of the variations on screwdrivers/harvey wallbangers. Actually, I like the names more than the taste when it comes to this particular family of drinks.

I can't remember them all off the top of my head but I do remember that if you add sloe gin and southern comfort to a screwdriver, you get a Slow Comfortable Screw. Then add the Galliano in for the Wallbanger addition, making it a Slow Comfortable Screw Against a Wall. I think you then need to add Amaretto for the added touch of amore to give turn it into a Slow Comfortable Screw Against a Wall with a Kiss.

There are more puns to be had with further additions, but I can't remember them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried rieslings and zinfadels. Not for me. I have a brother-in-law who got a degree in enology (wine-making). He said some people with a "sweet palate" can't really develop their palates.

No problem, really. I'm not supposed to have much alcohol--it interacts with my meds.

Woah Woah

Strawberry Daquiri's?? Pina Collada's??
Let's all get mani-pedi's while we're at it too.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label straight, with ice if you want but nothing more.
If single malt is your style try a Glen Livet or Singleton

^Try floating a measure of Galliano on top of your screwdriver -now that's a nice drink!

For a cocktail type beverage

/.../

...it...

...it is...

...it is green!

Heh, I just made this for myself:

GreenNY.jpg

  • ½ Blue Curaçao
  • 1 Gin
  • 1 Vodka
  • 1 Rum
  • 1 Triple sec
  • 1 Tequila
  • 3 OJ
Shake with ice

I'm going to ask this hot bartender what she'd call it and let you all know?

One more suggestion for Long Island Iced Tea but they can come strong (without tasting it) if you're not carefull. Always talk to your bartender/waiter and tell them what you want.
