Recommend an alcoholic drink for me?

The first time I saw such a thing was actually in France, a four litre plastic container of red wine (in a supermarket) - and that was at least 15 years ago.

I'd like to find a drink that tastes good (without a strong alcohol flavor) and in moderation provides a pleasant sensation without sneaking up on me or making me hyper.
It sounds like you're looking for a Jagerbomb. :techman: And if that doesn't work for you I know a guy who sells these pills...

For a cocktail type beverage, Midori on the rocks might work if you like sweet drinks. It's a liquer made from honeydew melons, and for a resident of this fine forum, there is a bonus:

Cheers, and happy new year!

I confess to enjoying fruity, "girly" drinks. I don't care for beer or wine. I don't like carbonation with my alcohol, either. But I do love sugary, fruity mixed drinks. A simple screwdriver, a hairy navel, cosmo, sex on the beach, etc. Good stuff.

Heh, I just made this for myself:

GreenNY.jpg

  • ½ Blue Curaçao
  • 1 Gin
  • 1 Vodka
  • 1 Rum
  • 1 Triple sec
  • 1 Tequila
  • 3 OJ
Shake with ice

Thanks to everyone for the advice. So far, it sounds like I may want to get a bottle of French champagne, a bottle of Captain Morgan, a 2-liter of Coke, and a 2-liter of RC (in case it turns out that I would prefer it with the rum, as I normally prefer RC to Coke), and experiment with those.
Well, it depends on your particular flavor likes, the situation you are consuming it under, and wild card factors.

Lets start with the first, what flavors do you like?
Drinks I have tried and what I thought of them:

Screwdriver - too strong with the flavor of alcohol
Pina Colada - The first one I had was made wrong - with vodka instead of rum - and again, the flavor of alcohol was too strong. I liked the other flavors, though, so since then I sometimes get Pina Colada mix and add ginger ale and drink it that way. I've tried a Bartles and James Pina Colada wine cooler, and again, there was an unpleasant flavor mixed in.
Strawberry Daquiri wine cooler - this, I actually know I like! But, I don't taste any of a flavor I identify with alcohol, so I worry about getting "snuck up on" like I mentioned in the OP, and don't drink them, save sharing a single bottle with my wife two or three times over the course of the last 17 years.
Peppermint Schnapps - refreshing like Listerine, and like Listerine, about a mouthful is more than enough, and then I don't want any more. Good flavor, but too strong, and when I say that I'm not sure if I mean the peppermint or the alcohol.
Inexpensive domestic beers - horse piss. Except - I had a couple of cups of Busch at a pool tournament my dad was in when I was in jr high. The beer was over a full cup of ice, and tasted watered down, to boot. That wasn't half bad.
Sam Adams Cherry Wheat - Why do they lie and say anything about a "cherry" flavor? Do they mean the wood, rather than the fruit? Horrid.
Korbel - We each had a swallow of this brand of red wine at a wedding reception about a decade ago, and I think I know what the "rotten fruit" taste that Maestro's wife is referring to is.
Zima - No. Just no. I'd be hard pressed to say what specifically is wrong with it - I think it may be more than one thing.

As to what flavors I like, well, a full list would take a while, but drinks that I have eyed as possibly appealing but haven't tried include Kahlua and a few other chocolate drinks, Appletini (if JD from Scrubs likes it, and he's supposed to be a huge wuss, then...), and Guinness, 'cause it seems like The Beer so maybe its better?...

I also sometimes make myself cafe mocha coffee and mix in caramel and peppermint syrups, and I've thought about substituting in peppermint schnapps, but I don't keep it on hand.

There are as many different Appletinis as there are Dry Martinis - have a talk with you friendly local bartender about what you like and dislike before actually ordering one ;)

I approve. :techman:

I am drinking some Brandy tonight.

I will mix it with Code Red Mt Dew or Sparkling Punch.

I'm not a fan of fruity alcoholic drinks (unless you are counting wine), I find it safer to know I am actually drinking alcohol when I drink it, bad things happen otherwise.

You could make a something like a tequila sunrise...but instead of grenadine use blue curaçao. I call it a Tequila Moonrise.

Isn't that a Harvey Wallbanger? OK, but I prefer regular Screwdrivers.

To the OP, of course it's perfectly possible to be a light, regular social drinker. If you're interested in finding drinks you like, dive straight in: either start wine-tasting or gradually work your way through the list of drinks in a local nice cocktail lounge. The structure of either approach will let you try a lot of drinks quickly, which is essential in figuring out what you like... and why. I think for a novice drinker, beer is a harder starting point as lots on the market tends to be bitter (as in tasting bitter, not necessarily being Bitter). There are some really great beers out there too, of course.

Personally, I really love wine but also enjoy many different cocktails and quite a few beers.

I think any alcoholic beverage can be an acquired taste, even beer or wine. (I still can't get behind wine aside from the occasional glass, and I've been drinking for 34 years)

If you don't like the taste of alchohol in general, a good hard cider is a good bet but they can be dangerous. It can be easy to lose track, and the next thing you know, you've passed tipsy and arrived in drunksville. That alchohol taste you get with mixed drinks can act as a good limiter for you at first, and eventually you might start to like it.

As far as spirits, Vodka is pretty much tasteless and you can mix it with different juices depending on your taste. Just play with the juice to vodka ratios until the strength is more to your liking. Other than vodka, captain Morgan and seven-up is pretty non-offensive (I think it tastes like ginger-ale), again, just play with the booze to mixer ratios until you find somthing you like.

Personally, my favorite cocktail is a Jack and Coke. I tend to burn them, but after the first couple, they don't seem so bad. :)

--edited to add: A good Bloody Mary on a Sunday morning is a beautiful thing!

Q: Recommend an alcoholic drink for me?

A: All of them.

Wine. Or good beer.
If you want to go for it try a "Bottle cap" shooter,( tastes just like the candy you had as a kid)

Not sure what is in it but they are tasty!!

Ok, going from this I would say that one of the first things you need to do is secure your ratio of alcohol to mix. Seems like your experiences in the past had the bartender mix them too strong. I've found that a lot of bar tenders get heavy handed these days unless you tell them to do otherwise. Next time you order a drink make sure to tell them not to mix it too strong.

Start slow when you play at home, with more "mix" and a splash of alcohol. Then progressively try mixing them stronger till you hit the point where you are comfortable.

I would suggest picking up a small bottle of good vodka, kettel one or Stoli are pretty good. Store it in the freezer for a few days prior to consumption, you will want it to be thick when you poor it (if you are brave enough you can try a straight sip). Try mixing it with lemonade, orange, or cranberry juice. These are simple drinks to start with.

Holdfast made a good point in the post below about wine tasting. Every wine and nearly each year of every wine tastes different, so wine tastings can be a great way to find specific wines, and specific vintages of those wines, which you really like so you can seek out those.

The ultimate goal of this is to have fun. Never feel like you have to finish a drink. never feel like you have to drink something you don't like.

I've never really liked beer all that much. But I'm a big fan of a good scotch. I also really like jagermeister which a lot of people don't really seem to. I like it on the rocks similar to how I drink my scotch.
