Recasting TNG

Status
Not open for further replies.
If TNG were recast, I'd like to have an actual Frenchman play Picard. I'd prefer that Data have a harder edge and not be as innocent as in the original TNG.

Data should be played by an actual android! I can't stand those egotistical actors who think they can play different nationalities and species and get away with it.

yeah, other than that, I dunno.... maybe in a not very likely, or Needed, TNG Reboot, Katee Sackhoff would make the Yar character last past season 1............

No, no and no again!

I hate the idea of the TNG characters being played by other actors than Stewart, Frakes etc.

If they can't come up with a new series, new characters and new ideas instead of "re-booting", then they should just call it a day and quit.
Agreed.

The only way I would be into any type of TNG recast, would be a recast of Picard only, by a younger actor in his 30s or early 40s, for a USS Stargazer series.

For consistency, I suppose they could get Tom Hardy or Marcus Nash (Tapestry).

Michael Rosenbaum could work, too.

Picard, Data and Riker were just perfect. I don't know if anyone could ever replace them.

This.

The cast were perfect as is. No one else, and I mean NO ONE ELSE other than

Patrick Steward
Johnathan Franks
LeVar Burton
Michael Dorn
Gates McFadden
Marina Sirtis
and Brent Spiner

should be playing the roles of

Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Commander William Riker
Lt. Comm Geordi LaForge
Lieutenant Worf
Doctor Beverly Crusher
Commander Deanna Troi
and Lt. Comm Data

I agree. Patrick Steward, Johnathan Franks, Lever Barton, Micheal Dorm, Gates McDonald, Dan Marino, and Brent Spinner are simply irreplaceable and unforgettable.

If there's an android who could play the part of Data, sign him up! My point is that, in the unlikely event of a TNG reboot, that I'd like to see different takes on the characters or even elimination of some characters like Riker. Some of the suggestions for a new Picard and Data seem like they're recasting Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner moreso than the characters.

I agree with that philosophy. Wentworth Miller would be a very different Picard than Patrick Stewart. Smart, strategic, but not priggish. I see him as more the daring Sisko type.

Alan Tudyk or Zachary Levi would also put their own stamp on Data, although that character more than the others is an iconic type that gives an actor less latitude.

Picard – Lambert Wilson (an actual Frenchman). If we can even change up the character a ittle more radically...how about Tony Todd? He's toiled (and i think done well) in a variety of secondary roles...i think he could handle the Big Chair.
Riker – Ian Anthony Dale (agent Simon Lee in The Event). Or, to provide the humor, Joe Flanigan (from Stargate Atlantis)
Data – Neil Grayston (doubles as computer voice)
Crusher – not sure who would be a good fit. But I ‘d have instead from the get go Pulaski, portrayed by Suzy Plakson
Geordi – Joe Morton. Since the timeline has changed, maybe things have “speeded” (i.e. the La Forge family reproduced quicker than the original timeline). Geordi as a mentor, and as someone who has lived a longer life with a disability…would be interesting for him to say no to a “cure”, or not jump at it as quickly as a younger person might
Troi – Marsha Thomason (Naomi Dorrit in "Lost")
Worf – Jamil Walker Smith (Sgt. Roanld Greer in SG Universe)
Yar – I’d recast her as Macha Hernandez, and put Erica Cerra (Jo Lupo in Eureka) in that role.
Wesley – Someone from Disney channel. Maybe even have a girl, named Leslie (wasn’t that the original plan?)

The cast were perfect as is. No one else [...]
If Kirk, Spock, and McCoy can be recast, then every other character from any series is fair game.

Can we recast TOS again and put it on TV? :rommie:
Only if some combination of RDM, Ira Steven Behr, and Robert Hewitt Wolfe are in charge!

My thoughts from the last couple times this topic was posted:

Jean-Luc Picard: Robert Wisdom
William Riker: James Badge Dale
Geordi La Forge: Chiwetel Ejiofor
Tasha Yar: Jamie-Lynn Sigler
Worf: J. D. Williams or Brian White
Beverly Crusher: Christina Hendricks
Deanna Troi: Elisabeth Moss
Data: Andrew Garfield
Wesley Crusher: Alexander Gould

Miles O'Brien: Brian F. O'Byrne
Katherine Pulaski: Shohreh Aghdashloo
Ro Laren: Stephanie Jacobsen
Q: Amaury Nolasco
Guinan: C. C. H. Pounder
Edward Jellico: Peter Stormare

I think I'll come up with a new list at some point in the next few days, though.

Picard: Lambert Wilson is exactly the type of actor I'd like.

Riker: Eliminate the character; it just doesn't make dramatic sense to split part of the role of Captain into an Executive Officer. The first officer should be a character who has some other "portfolio" like Science Officer.

Data: Have a character who's a little less of a child-like innocent. Maybe Lore is an earlier version of his software instead of a completely different individual. I thought about Michael Emerson, though he's not much younger than Spiner.

Barclay: Make him the chief engineer. He won't be as awkward as the original TNG, but still on the neurotic side. Geordi, a recurring character, is a brilliant young ensign just out of the academy.

Worf: Eliminate the character. He's probably the most explored, developed character in Star Trek. I'm not sure what else to do which wouldn't be a retread. Frankly, I also have Klingon fatigue.

Shran: Chief of security who comes from a prominent Andorian family.

Pulaski: Replace Crusher with Pulaski, but not as acerbic as in TNG.

Troi: Change her from the ship's counselor to chief diplomatic officer. May only be a recurring character. The character would be somewhat modeled on RJ Blaise from the Peter David written comics.

Ro Laren, Robin Leffler, Alyssa Ogawa: Recurring characters. Along with Geordi, they could offer a "Lower Decks" perspective in some episodes.

Tomalak: Recurring adversary played by Peter Jurasik

Crusher – not sure who would be a good fit. But I ‘d have instead from the get go Pulaski, portrayed by Suzy Plakson

That's a very interesting alternative. I was expecting you to suggest her for Crusher, since I've never read putting a redhead in a recast role for Pulaski.

The cast were perfect as is. No one else, and I mean NO ONE ELSE other than

Gates McFadden

should be playing the roles of

Doctor Beverly Crusher

Sorry for snipping your post, but it's only well said within the context of 1987-2002. This is TNG literally for the next generation. I'll come back to this at a later time.

Here's the weirdest cast I could come up with:

Captain Picard: James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano from The Sopranos)
Commander Riker: Tony Shalhoub (Monk from Monk)
Data: Michael Emerson (Benjamin Linus from Lost)
Worf: Danny DeVito (if you don't know who he is you're insane)
Beverly Crusher: Carrot Top in drag
Counselor Troi: Kim Kardashian (and she has to wear the hot strap outfit Milla Jovovich wore in the beginning Fifth Element)
Wesley Crusher: Adam Baldwin and he plays the exact same role as Wil Wheaton but we never explain why he looks like a 50 year old man (Casey from Chuck; Jayne Cobb from Firely)
Geordi: Andre Royo (Bubbles from The Wire)

Just like old relationships, you can't create what you had. Rebooting TNG is absurd. And what's all the negativity towards Frakes???? He's a nice guy.

Picard - Richard Dean Anderson
Riker - Joe Flanigan
Worf - Christopher Judge
Data - Michael Shanks
Dr. Crusher - Amanda Tapping
Troy - Claudia Black
Geordi - David Hewlett

-------------OR-----------

Picard - John C. McGinley
Riker - Zach Braff
Worf - Neil Flynn
Data - Sam Lloyd
Dr. Crusher - Christa Miller
Troy - Sarah Chalke
Geordi - Donald Faison

yaaaaah that would rule
