Reboot DS9 movies?

Christopher Bennet on the Lit forum suggested that there could be reboots for TNG, DS9 and Voyager after the third and possibly last TOS reboot movies. So this is just a theory, no hard evidence, but as Christopher points out, shared universe movies have become hugely popular with Marvel comics heroes, and Star Wars is set to begin releasing a movie every year.

So hypothetically, we could have movies coming out with reboots of TNG, DS9 and Voyager, one of them every three years. I'd prefer to just use the original cast and continue their adventures, but at this point, reboots seem much more likely. I'd be pretty excited to get more Trek, and as I've enjoyed the recent Reboot movies, this sounds pretty exciting as a possibility. There is a rumor that a young Deanna Troi was being cast in the third JJ Trek movie, so this isn't completely unfounded speculation.

Which makes me wonder how this would work, what actors could play these beloved parts, what would be different, what would be the same. The recent movies made a bold move in destroying Vulcan, so any future continuing from that would be potentially different from the original version.

I'm posting this in both the Voyager and DS9 forums, as this is relevant to both.

I don't think a reboot of DS9 is likely, because it's just not as iconic as the original Star Trek. More likely, imho, is an all-new Star Trek series or miniseries. The big question is would it be set in the original or Prime timeline, or in the new JJA timeline. I'm hoping for Prime.

I don't have any strong casting ideas at this point, but no, please, no Will (or Jaden Smith). I do like Jada, but I don't particularly think of any specific lead role I think she'd be right for.

I could see Far Beyond the Stars reconfigured as a standalone story that has no specific relationship to the ST universe: the story of a pulp writer trying to convince people of a heroic future for African Americans, ultimately being the catalyst for such a future.

A DS9 reboot is just not happening, ever, IMHO. I think a lot of the hardcore DS9 proselytisers (is that a word?) massively overestimate its popularity and longterm penetration in popular culture.

I do like the show to an extent, but a Star Trek movie with prophets, pah-wraiths (replete with "eval" red eyes), costa mogen spell books, superstitious whining Bajorans praying to da gods in the temple etc - no thanks.

The most recent Planet of the Apes remake is based on one of the more obscure sequels and seems to be doing okay, so I guess anything's possible. Anything that doesn't involve the slightest hint of original thought, anyway.

I'm not a fan of the idea of reboots. There are really two directions you can go. Either you copy the original only with modern aesthetics, or you come up with your own idea which only has character names and vague character roles in common.

And if you're going to come up with your own idea, why bother using the same names? The difference is measured in millions of dollars, so you're basically sacrificing the writers' creative freedom for a built in audience.

Either give me a continuation of the DS9 storyline (Not gonna happen) or give me a new universe. I don't care about seeing any characters named Sisko, Odo, or Quark if they're not the same people.

I could go for a continuation, but not a reboot. I think season one was ok--it had a few great moments--but I don't want to revisit it. Season one was so small in comparison to what the series became.

I'll even go further: the current reboot of Trek feels like a return to the small, confined feel of the first six movies. The Enterprise is always, for some inexplicable reason, the only ship in range and the only ship that can save Earth from imminent destruction. Every adventure is always a family trip: since every character is along for the ride, every character needs something to do. If that is the model for a reboot of DS9, it would pretty much sap the potential the series had of telling stories that occur over time and over multiple locales. I'd much rather see an entirely new station crew (and vendors) if the focus were still on the geostrategic value of this one place in relation to many other planets and governments.

I still haven't watched it, but I think it's more of a sequel to the first "reboot/new" film than a reboot of a previous sequel.

I think that rebooting everything, DS9 included, is pointless, and pretty much stupid. It would be a lot better if they just created a new crew — even within the same time frame as the Enterprise — and continued from there.

People have been recasting King Arthur, Dracula, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, and every Shakespearean play for hundreds of years. Audiences seem to love it. Why not? We are having a go at reimagining the TNG cast over in a TNG Reboot thread.

Reboots, Restagings, or whatever you want to call them have been part and parcel of performance arts of millennia. Great characters are immortal, as are great stories. And you can always write new ones.

When the TOS movies end I'd prefer if they brought Trek back to the small screen with something that isn't just TNG/DS9/VOY mk2. It's time for a new Captain to be added to the pantheon.

I would pay damn good money to see Captain Kira of DS9 whooping butt (as only she can) on the big screen. I can only weep and cringe at the thought of a JJ-inspired "reboot" of the series.

How is that going to work?!?! Deanna isn't a century old! Or is she part of an experiment to send someone back in time to find Prime Spock and restore the timeline? If so, there are better qualified officers for the job.
