Reassessing nBSG’s ending

it’s funny: Unlike many viewers, I was fine with most aspects of Battlestar Galactica’s finale — including it-hates-being-called-that — except for the idea of just giving up
cities and technology
, which I felt could never fly.

Sixteen years older, and given the specific context—

— I find I can completely buy it now.

Funny how getting older can change your perspective.

Plus, one concern expressed in the sequence — about what the Centurions might do — is resolved by the mere fact that we’re still here to watch it.

The only technology they had were ships that were on the verge of falling apart, and zero infrastructure to create new ones, much less the infrastructure to build cities.

What exactly would you have had them do?

I never had a problem with it. I like the finale a lot. But maybe you're the age now that I was when I first saw it? ;)

At the least, a whole lot of carpentry, and urban planning on that basis? I don’t mean modern metropolises, but basic low-level Viking-to-medieval town building would be possible.

And as noted, the stated point of the post was that I don’t feel the same way anymore, so I’m not sure what argument you seem to want to have?

I misread your post. I thought you still had an issue with them abandoning technology.

I never had a problem with the ending. That said, the Colonials had built a functioning town and infrastructure on New Caprica. They could have done so on Earth. Land the ships and cannibalize them for parts and power.

I think that the ships were in worse condition by the end of the series, and they understood that they had learned a lot about what it meant to be human since those episodes.

The only improvement I would suggest would be to tie the ludditeism into Baltar's cult; I.e. he's preaching anti-technology throughout S4. Not just because it would provide setup, but because it would allow a payoff to the Lee and Baltar tension running through the later episodes of the season. Lee promoting Baltar's worldview in the finale would be a gesture between the two characters.
