Spoilers Ready Room with Wil Wheaton

So Kirk's body was taken by something called Project Phoenix.

Doesn't a Phoenix rise from its own ashes?

after it spontaneous combusts and kills itself yes. A Rogue James T. Kirk (similar to his mirror universe counterpart) would be a significant threat to Starfleet and Federation.

I can't believe Picard piled all those rocks on top of a critically injured Kirk and then just left him there. What. An. Asshole.
Oh please, feel sorry for Picard. He had the honour of having to lift a BRIDGE off of Kirk and then drag his fat, monster maroon covered, arse up a fucking Mountain.

Maybe he never moved Kirk at all. He made a little pile of rocks for a pretend grave, and just left the mostly-dead Kirk under all that twisted metal?

Yep, I enjoyed the Shatner books.

Like I said earlier, I don't expect Kirk to show up here. I do appreciate the easter egg as a coda to "Generations" which gives the possibility that Kirk's adventures might not have ended in a movie I found very disappointing. Kirk is my favorite fictional character and I love the idea of endless possibilities for his return in the 25th century. If the easter egg does nothing more than that, Matalas has my gratitude.
Yeah, I guess Terry Matalas is trying to take the heat off Berman & Braga for killing Kirk in ST:GEN

This is saying to fans:
"See? James T. Kirk WASN'T killed in Generations. He's not dead."

I don't know that it's risky. Even if Matalas does nothing else with it, even if it is never addressed again in the future, he has added a coda to "Generations" that seems to be well-received.

Strikes me as eminently unnecessary, and creating speculation around Kirk's returning.

I don't know...

Having Picard meet Kirk in Generations was a big deal during what some think of as Trek's heyday. Having a nod to that, during this love letter to 80's and 90's Trek seems fitting to me.

To each their own.

I'm not interested in talking Kirk in this season.

Fair enough. I think this is in the same vein as showing a TOS era Connie---a nice nod to fans of such but not an integral part of the story they are telling. Mileage will vary.
If they nod any more to fans their heads will fall off. It's hitting absurd lengths.

I don't think there needs to be fan pandering for the sake of fan pandering. Seeing the TOS Constittution in the museum is enough for me to have that little happy nostalgia button ticked. I don't need an apostolic dictum factum about the technical variances of why some Constitutions looked like TOS and some looked like SNW. If we see the SNW Enterprise morph into looking more TOS-y..cool.

If we don't, also cool.

Spaceship is spaceship.
