Re-Watching Voyage of the Damned.

I was re-watching the Voyage of the Damned and a few things bothered me.

More of a link to Blake's 7, the Teleporter was so dang very simular, to the whole "Teleport Bracelets" and the way the ship's engines looked, they looked like the Liberators. Just something I thought reminded me an aweful lot like it.

My theory is that the people who built the Titanic eventually got to too reliant on computers and they took over, the computers then forming "The System" that built the Liberator.

VoTD was the most disappointing of the Xmas(or is it Crimbo? I crack up every time I read that - you Brits are so funny!)specials. I have only seen it once and have no desire to see it again.

Funny -- it and "The Runaway Bride" are constantly trading places in my mind for favorite Christmas special. ;)

Amen! I truly loathe that episode. It's the second-worst episode of Doctor Who I have ever watched (The Doctor's Daughter being number one)...

I feel it was RTD indulging his gayness just to stunt cast Kylie. A flimsy story was erected around her and you have the disappointing Crimbo special that resulted. It just felt "off" to me. The dark moments felt out of place in a situation that should have been more comical or AT LEAST light hearted in an Xmas special. I didn't care about the characters that died and there is that awful awkwardness when, IIRC, I can barely remember it, the fat man and lady die or something and you are supposed to care but I was watching the telly thinking, "God is this going to end soon?!?"

Yuck.

I don't care what people say about the acting of that Russel Morrisey guy or whoever, this year's HAS TO BE better than VoTD.

How can I be bigoted against gays when I am one myself?

Her casting was detrimental to the episode and was an indulgence.

1. I felt that Kylie did just fine. (And I'm straight.)

2. You still engaged in an act of stereotyping against gays on the basis of no evidence other than RTD's homosexuality. That you engaged in bigotry against your own group does not change the fact that it's a stereotype.

Is it a stereotype if it's true? RTD does love his Kylie. (And so does Benjamin Cook. I think one-third of The Writer's Tale is the two of them going on about how awesome Kylie is.)

"Cyborgs have rights now, they can even get married!"

Worst line ever.

Yeah I have to agree--that said the rest of the episode was fine as far as I'm concerned (although I thought Kylie's eventual fate was a bit rubbish)

An important point to remember about Kylie is that many straight people fancy her too, so for me Kylie in maids outfit and boots makes VOTD--was it stunt casting, yes, am I bovvered, no.

Let's be honest, on the face of it at the time casting Tate in the runaway bride was 'stunt' casting.

For me TRB is the worst Crimbo special, but I have only seen it once so I really should give it another try some day.

No, but it's stereotyping if you're running around saying they only like her because they're gay.

LOL!!!!!

:guffaw:

That reminds me of this Asian girl at work who goes on and on about the weird habits of her family and other Asians she knows. One day she was making these highly racist remarks about Chinese and we had to remind her there was this new hire guy in the office who was also Asian. She went bright red and kinda hid under her table.

I now call her a "raisin" because she is a racist Asian.

As for my comment, I loathe some of the things gays do and some of the traits that are, in my opinion, just put on affectations.

Besides, we all know Judy Garland wins over Kylie EVERY time!!!

;)

I like Voyage Of The Damned, I thought it was pretty amazing that they were able to throw together a movie and length special with not alot of money or time and was able to fit it into their schedule for the rest of the season.

"Voyage of the Damned" was pretty underwhelming to me the first time through, but with subsequent viewings I've raised my appreciation. Rusty is a clever writer.

It's my least-favorite of the Chrimbo episodes, but given the excellence of "The Runaway Bride" and the solid work of "The Christmas Invasion," that's not really a black mark.

Like Steve, I think "Voyage of the Damned" improves on repeated viewings. You stop noticing the spectacle, and start noticing the story.

It's still not without its flaws. You have to wonder just what the hell the Doctor's plan was; once he was captured by the Angels, it took Kylie's heroic sacrifice to save the day.

I think it's pretty clear that he was just making it up as he went along.

yeah that makes me look subtle

Xmas(or is it Crimbo? I crack up every time I read that - you Brits are so funny!)
yeah I dont think anyone worth while says "Crimbo"

:guffaw:that is just so wrong.

really? I thought she was just fine in it.

Ok I confess its a bit of a casting gimmick, but I think it worked out, and its something the christmas specials can get away with.

and Kylie has also likes Doctor Who, which I think has more to do with her casting.

The less good parts about VotD, um the Doctor flying with the Angels who had accpet him as the next highest authority for almost no reason, but its no worse, than Last of the TimeLords

It's so so but I agree that it pales in comparison to "The Christmas Invasion" (has any other Doctor ever gotten such an excellent introduction?) & "The Runaway Bride" (because Catherine Tate is just awesome in everything she does).

I did like the Doctor validating the Nativity story in his own way. "I got the last room at the inn." It made up for the subversive, anti-Christian symbolism of blowing up the star in "The Runaway Bride."
