Re-watching DS9

When DS9 aired its original run, I was 6 years old so my memory of the episodes I did see is very limited at best though of course I remember more of the later seasons. I decided after I finished my Babylon 5 run earlier this summer that I would watch DS9 after and over the past several weeks I have.

I just reached the 19th episode of Season 3 and so far I am so glad I came back to DS9. I've forgotten how good it really was, how the characters mix so well together and how scary the unknown Dominion was at this point in the TREK franchise. Quark and Odo's scenes are some of the best in TREK but what I've noticed so far is DS9 in its opening 3 seasons has been very consistance with good episodes and I am so hooked on it at the moment.

I cannot wait to get to the Dominion War but for now am really enjoying DS9 all over again

Yep, me too. And I'm on season 3, too. I love watching the entire series from scratch and noticing new things, little nuances, that I hadn't caught before. I also develop new appreciations for the actors; right now I'm truly amazed at the acting ability of Rene Auberjonois.

Re The Quark/Odo dynamic, I really enjoyed the early episode of Boston Legal last season where Armin Shimmerman guest starred. They practically wedged Rene Auberjonois into a scene with him just for the hell of it. Classic case of closing your eyes, listening to them bicker and it was just like the good old days!

^I'm sorry I missed that! Did Auberjonois use his deep gruff Odo voice or his normal voice? Hopefully he reverted to his Odo voice during that scene :)

Sorry, I can't remember myself offhand. I just remember thinking it was great, just like being back on DS9. It was only a brief scene, but it's another nice little Trek in-joke for Boston Legal, God bless 'em.

^cool! do you remember the name of the ep? I missed that one, as well. I'll have to give it a looksee some time.

I'm in the same boat as you NX01. When DS9 originally aired, I was also a little kid, but mine showed at 1 in the morning, so not only did I remember nothing, but I wouldn't have gotten to see it anyways! My brother got me season 7 last Christmas, and between that and the few reruns I've seen, it has quickly become my favorite Star Trek series. Glad you refound it!

I have just finished the 3rd season and I notice towards the end of this season, Piller's name is not on the executive producer role ?

Is that because he left to make Legend? or for other reasons cause I know he was around in Voyager and does he come back later in DS9 ? or does Ira Behr takes over from him alongside Rick Berman in season 4 to the end ?

Watched "Way of the Warrior" and omfg what a awesome episode, DS9 knows just how to do action and its one of the best episodes of DS9 and Star Trek.

Just watched "The Visitor" and while I don't think its quite as good as a lot of people make out, its still easily one of the best DS9 episodes and one of the best the franchise has ever had.

Season 4 so far is very very strong, must be the number 4 ey

Following the series on Virgin. Most recent episode: "Second Sight", S2. It's been a blast so far. :)

Getting towards the end of season 4 and its been a very strong season plus Worf's addition only just adds to the quality.

One of my favourites episodes of TREK has to be "Our Man Bashir" its one of the funniest episodes to date and was just plain fun to watch.

Just saw "The Alternate". Nice episode. It's funny how similar the plot is in some ways to "The Begotten", Doctor Mora's second appearance. (Both episodes involve a new metamorphic lifeform and Mora and Odo trying to solve a problem).

"Armageddon Game" tomorrow, and then "Whispers" on Friday. Talk about ending the working week with a bang! :)

The wife and I marathoned "Blood Oath," "The Maquis I & II," "The Wire," and "Crossover" last night. A Guinness accompanied each, and fantastic merriment was had by all. She's watching a lot of these for the first time, as her family skipped a good deal of DS9 when it aired. It comforts me revisiting this series after years away on DVD through someone else's fresh eyes, only to discover that I was right in my then-unpopular opinion that this show was utterly top-notch, even early on.

Piller's input into DS9 pretty much ends with "Improbable Cause" I believe which is a part one of a two part episode that ends with the "Die is Cast." From the "Die is Cast" on, Ira Stephen Behr is the executive producer and basically oversaw the show until it ended. I'm not sure why the change was made or where Michael Piller went to afterwards (Voyager I think), but Piller deserves a lot of the credit for creating and developing the characters along with the basic premise of the show while Ira Behr stepped up and made the show more serialized when he took over the show and developed some new story elements while elaborating on some of Piller's ideas.

Rick Berman's role in DS9 is pretty much said to be low key especially once Ira Behr took over. He may have had a hand in developing the first two seasons, but he pretty much was more focussed on VOY and left DS9 alone. He sometimes might have suggested cript changes and I'm sure that he oversaw the business/financial end of the show but was not so involved in the day to day creatiive process

Just finished season 4 and a nice season with plenty of little gems and the finale left Odo changed and the little bit about Gowran possibly being a changeling but for a finale it felt a little flat.

Next season is when things start to heat up big time and I cannot wait to begin it but at the same time, am very sad that I have only 3 seasons left.

"Armageddon Game" today, great episode. Looking forward to "Whispers" tomorrow, a paranoid little favourite of mine. S2's been a big step up from S1, it's just been reminding me why Piller considered this such an outstanding season. He's damn right.

I am re-watching them all on Virgin 1.

I've also seen some on YouTube.

Fantastic stuff. Better on repeat viewings.

It also makes me sad though to see how poor Star Trek has been since DS9 ended.

Just got to "By Inferno's Light"

How long was Matrok kidnapped by the Dominion?

Whispers was just as good as I remembered it if not better. Its not very often in Trek (or television) that one actor gets such a large amount of screentime. Colm Meaney is such a fantastic actor.
