Re-Watching DS9

I think this was a middle of the road episode, mostly due to casting Dey Young. In all three of her appearances ("The Masterpiece Society", here, and "TWO DAYS AND TWO NIGHTS"), I was never quite compelled by her portrayals. Romance of the Week episodes live or die almost entirely due to the guest star, and she doesn't really work for me.

I also think this episode should have been done while Odo was a solid. Probably would have had more of an impact.

I'd give this a 5 or 5.5, probably.

I wonder if this episode was thought of earlier in the season, but went through re-writes which delayed production until this point?

EDITED TO ADD: I just had another thought. Typing it now so I don't lose it. Bashir plays spy in this episode, then Narissa turns out to be an actual spy. So, it was like they were tipping their hand without tipping it.

It does almost seem as though this episode was intended to occur while Odo was still a solid.

The ending is a neat little surprise twist, but it does also feel like a way of ensuring the events of the episode don't need to have any lasting repercussions.

I like the episode and with Odo they frequently got to lean into those noirish stories. I'm sure there's a story from the black and white era that inspired this or you could find a similar story. As the cop + woman format just translates rather effortlessly. It'd just be amnesia in a movie.

Well then it'd be called "A Complicated Investigation."
