My signature suggests that I don't accept anything post TOS or at least post 1979. Well, I beg to differ.

Recently I've seen the price on some season sets becoming very reasonable and so at some point I'll pick up the first three or four seasons of TNG because the bulk of the stuff I like in the show is there.

I'm not a consistent fan of TNG, but they did have ideas I found interesting and they did do stories I liked and how they did them. And so here they are.

TNG – Good to Excellent (23%)
Where No One Has Gone Before
The Last Outpost
Lonely Among Us
11001001
Heart Of Glory
Conspiracy
Where Silence Has Lease
Elementary, Dear Data
The Schizoid Man
A Matter Of Honor
The Measure Of A Man*
Contagion
Pen Pals
Q, Who?*
Up The Long Ladder
The Emissary
The Ensigns Of Command
The Survivors
Who Watches The Watchers
The Enemy
The Vengeance Factor
The Defector
The High Ground
Yesterday’s Enterprise*
The Offspring
Sins Of The Father
Captain’s Holiday
Tin Man
Sarek
The Best Of Both Worlds (Part 1 & 2)*
Future Imperfect
The Wounded
Devil’s Due
The Drumhead
Darmok
Ethics
The First Duty
Tapestry
Rightful Heir
Lower Decks

That's a pretty definative list. Not sure about Ethics, though.

I'd throw Times Squared & Data's Day in there too.

What do the * denote?

Measure of a man is okay, some of the logic doesn't work for me though. Data is clearly, clearly alive and I find it hard to believe that he would have risen to the rank of Lt Commander without someone asking this question before. Bruce Maddox would have been around 9 years old when he opposed Data's enlistment in starfleet.

I'd probably put my top 5 (in no particular order) as

1. 11001001
2. The Offspring
3. Data's Day
4. Best of Both Worlds Pt1
5. Q Who

wow, to state as fact that "Contemporary Trek has failed" is pretty extreme.. i'd personally rate TNG above TOS everytime...

I'm currently working on the “captrek TNG marathon.”

The first criterion is that the marathon should include all of my favorite episodes. Note that I say “my favorite” and not “the best.” For example, “Cause and Effect”, “Time Squared”, and “Parallels” are very popular episodes, and in an objective sense may therefore be considered among the best, but to me they are mere curiosities and I have no problem leaving them out of my marathon.

The second criterion is that the marathon should feel reasonably complete, so the inclusion of some episodes may mandate the inclusion of others.

For example, “The Naked Now” is not a particularly good episode, but is required because it is mentioned in “The Measure of a Man” that Data and Yar had been intimate. If you are not familiar with the events of TNN, that revelation in TMOAM is likely to have you thinking “WTF?!!!” and be distracting enough to affect your appreciation of the rest of the episode. To a lesser extent, TNN is required by “Where No One Has Gone Before”; if WNOHGB is the second episode in the marathon, the “Wesley as Mozart” thing seems to come out of nowhere, but the various depictions of Wesley’s ingenuity in TNN set that up nicely.

Another less obvious example is “Ménàge a Troi,” which was not included in the first draft of my marathon, but I found it jarring to see Wesley, without explanation, wearing a Starfleet uniform at the start of “The Best of Both Worlds.” So, yes, I included MAT for the Wesley subplot that I think gets less than five minutes of screen time. Fortunately, when I watched the episode, I found it not nearly as bad as I thought I remembered it being, and it doesn’t require any previous familiarity with Lwaxana or the Ferengi.

It’s still a work in progress, but this is how it looks right now:

Code:
Encounter at Farpoint

Well, it is a matter of opinion. And I've had that sig for some years now.

The real flaw with Data is conceptual and the backstory as stated for him. If he'd been in Starfleet for some two decades or whatever then many of the things he struggled with during the early TNG seasons should have more likely been encountered years before. I think it more likely that Data would have been more at ease with himself (as he was in the latter seasons of TNG) by the time he was assigned to the 1701D.
