1 - I know that seems very harsh. But I thought about it, and there really is no other way I can rate this. Honestly speaking, there was not a single thing I enjoyed about this movie.
I went into this film with very, VERY low expectations. I couldn't stand INS, and I found ENT as well as VOY to be pretty awful. Suffice it to say, the name Star Trek didn't seem very promising at the time. So it's not as though I was hoping for too much, I'd say.
I have a wide spectrum of problems with this film that cover just about every area. I thought the story was pretty contrived and not very interesting. The whole idea behind the Picard clone as well as B4 just don't seem to make much sense to me.
I also found some of the characters to be pretty much out of character. I don't mind the fact that Starfleet has a dune buggy (though I'm not really sure why they'd need one). But I have to honestly say that Picard just didn't feel like Picard at all in those scenes to me. The same goes for him in the wedding scenes, where I felt he was bordering on being unwatchable.
On a broader level, the film really makes me wonder why this is supposed to be the flagship or the top crew in Starfleet, for that matter. How naively or stupidly (take your pick) they deal with finding B4 ("Yeah, let's just re-activate him. It's not like there've ever been bad Data clones...") is, for me, beyond comprehension.
This, again, connects with the more than troubled story in that it hinges on so many unlikely things to happen for Shinzon's plan to work. If the setup alone is this troubled, that's usually a very bad sign IMHO.
Another problem I had was that I felt the actor who played Shinzon was nothing like Stewart. I can see why they picked him. He does have some similar physical traits, but that's really just not enough to make it believable, I think. As a consequence, I never even once had the feeling we were seeing Picard facing off with a younger and alternative version of himself (which could indeed have been interesting).
Speaking of being out of character, I really don't buy into the Romulans being fooled by Shinzon like that. I suppose one could argue that the Tal Shiar was severely weakened in the Dominion war. But still it seems to me as though the Romulans we'd come to know over the years would have put a stop to a guy like this much, much sooner.
What also bothered me a lot about the film was Data's death. I well and truly felt absolutely nothing when he bit the dust. I think it was simply badly handled in the film and seemed absolutely needless. Plus any possible gravitas the death itself might of had was pretty much killed by how B4 seemed to be set up as a replacement.
The effects IIRC were good. But the action set pieces they were used for didn't really do anything for me. The same goes for things like the Riker fight scene where he's rather conveniently separated from everyone else so they can have a mano a mano.
In addition, none of the humor worked for me. As was indicating above, I felt the wedding scene was just terrible. As was anything else that was probably supposed to be funny.
I'm a big fan of film music, so I usually tend to look out for the music in a film and remember the films where the music impressed me. This is not one of them. That's not saying the music was bad. It just didn't stick in my mind whatsoever.
That's all I can really think of right now. I can honestly say I didn't enjoy anything about this film. I'm not sure it's the worst movie ever out there (probably not), but I certainly wouldn't consider it even close to 'good'. As a consequence, all I could really go with was "1".
Also, I have to say that I'd take TFF over this film any day. I do think TFF is a pretty bad film. But at least there's some fun in it here and there. And some of the bad parts are enjoyable for their cheesiness. NEM, on the other hand, IMHO is just bad as in bad, with nothing to make watching it any fun at all.
If people enjoy NEM, that's fine with me. I simply didn't.
