The Best:

1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan--This movie has rich themes and speaks to the human condition while mirroring the advancement of technology and the improved warfare of history. It talks of sacrifice and friendship in a very logical manner.

2. Star Trek: The Motion Picture--An inventive idea having a machine of our creation that wants to make the next leap into consciousness. In a million years I couldn't come up with this storyline.

The Good:

3. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock--Good picture in its execution, even though I don't like how it affected the rest of the Original Series movies. The stakes are high, it says something about friendship and putting Kirk in the position Spock was in in II. It's interesting to compare the two characters' reactions.

4. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country--While it is a flawed movie and the prison planet scenes are all but unwatchable, it is well-written and the acting is good.

5. Star Trek: Insurrection--It actually does some exploring, has an interesting moral dilemna. A very underrated version of Trek.

The Bad:

6. Star Trek: Generations--Some very bad acting in some parts of this. For instance, Troi and Picard talking about Rene. Hokey pull-at-your-heart-strings nonsense like a little girl losing her stuffed toy. This movie seems geared towards 1994's 10-year-old audience.

7.Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home--Fun, yes. Ruined the movie franchise as far as I am concerned. Some punishment for Kirk.

The Un-Trek:

8. Star Trek: Nemesis--Overtly dark, disgusting, and a supervillian adds to the descending night of the 24th century. Bad movie.

9. Star Trek: First Contact--Space monsters, a zombie queen seducing Data, and a psycho Starfleet Captain who suddenly puts down the crazy after one conversation. Oh, and they tell Zephram Cochrane how great he will be. Horrible.

10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier--Campy humor, a bad script, and worse acting (especially by Sybok). A deeply flawed movie that seems to re-tread on the Motion Picture.

 

[Python Trek]

1. TWOK---had the spirit of TOS, but with a bigger budget, which should have been the point of the Trek films anyway

2. TVH---funny, charming, lots of heart...didn't feel the need to whip out the phasers every three seconds

3. TSFS---great character moments, great dialogue, tons of pathos

4. TMP---at least it was about something, unlike 95% of SF films these days...and they didn't whip out the phasers every three seconds

Those four are the only Trek flicks that I like. FC was so-so, and I like about ten minutes of TUC, but the rest of them are frankly embarrassing. The makers of TFF, NEM, INS, GEN, and AbramsTrek should be slapped hard...and often.

Trek is better on TV, methinks. The films, comics, and novels, much more often than not, let me down.

 

[Mark 2000]

1. TUC - Basically one of the few perfect endings to a saga ever made.
2. TMP - Epic and pretty with a great soundtrack.
3. TSFS - Fun romp with a lot of new ships.
4.TVH - Fun romp with a bit too much humor.
5. TWOK - Overly quotable but ultimately overrated. Khan's got a mullet.
6. Gen - The best looking Trek film. It's worth skimming through to see all the nice SFX and set lighting.
7. TFF - Not too bad premise but with a horrible execution.
8. INS - Dull. Not very smart while being dull.
9. FC - Ruined the borg. Made Picard an idiot. Cast Data as a crazy murderer... again!
10. NEM - So senseless. Do I even need to explain?
