Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

I actually saw a horse die during the chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede. :(

(Well I didn’t actually see it die, as such; I saw it fall over. But later they had to put it down. :( )

Anyone that has had to put a loved pet/animal down knows that feeling, it is visceral for most.

I grew up w/ horses and it always hits me hard when I see stories of them being mistreated, there is a special place in Hell for those bastards but I don't recall Dante mentioning which circle they should be cast into, hopefully a lower one.

It’s sad that the horse died, but I did appreciate the fact that when it initially fell over and the veterinarians descended on it, they raised a huge tarp so no one could see what they were doing. At least the horse had some privacy..

^ I hope you're kidding. Horses don't need privacy. The tarp was held up so the audience won't be upset when they see the horse die. God forbid they see what races like that do to the animals.

If they need to race, they should lace up their sneakers and run it themselves.

What’s with all of the suicide prevention ads after episodes of the Magicians? I’m rewatching it from the beginning on Netflix, and I swear almost every episode has something.

The show is very dark and depressing some of the time that's why they put the PSA's on plus it's up to the individual channels what they do with content so maybe Netflix think it's worth it .

Oh, I thought they legally had to put those any show that end of any show that dealt with depression, or suicide or anything like that.

That's horrible.:weep:

I got a random call today from a friend I haven’t seen in a few years. She did not leave a message. I see three possibilities.

1. She was hacked and a scammer went through her contacts.
2. She misclicked in her address book.
3. This one I only think is plausible because I’ve seen her talk about Mary Kay on Facebook. She is calling everyone she knows to get them into an MLM scam.

There is no ‘Just want to catch up’ scenario she would call me instead of texting AND not leave a message.

One would fucking hope so. I'm so tired of seeing the depression rates increase, and talks of suicide as an option amongst teams and pre-teens.

It’s more women than men. I’d keep kids off social media as long as possible. I’m in the camp to not give kids smart phones. When they can pay for it themselves, then they’ll be old enough.

I know it's in vogue to blame social media, and certainly I see that as a part of it. But the other side, that I get to witness, is how students interact with each other. They are mean, tell people to go kill themselves, and engage in very negative behavior that parents are either not aware of, or indifferent to.

Social media is tough but it's more than that.

It was tough in the 80s too when I grew up. Absentee parents was the norm then as well. The big change is really kids putting their lives online. I don’t find that healthy at all. They also fail to communicate because of devices.

I agree and communication is a huge thing I teach when it comes to individual sessions, both with parents (who sometimes lack the skills because of absentee parents in the 80s) and the amplification of negativity due to lack of context in text based communications.

What drives me the most nuts is the assumption that parents have that kids just "figure this stuff out." No, no they don't. They need a guide, be it parent, teacher, mentor, pastor, coach, or whomever. They need a guide.

That’s because as a kid my parents expected me to figure stuff out. It sucked. But what I really learned was that my parents couldn’t be a guide because they still hadn’t figured it out.

It really is ok for a parent to learn with a child.

It's fucking hard work, takes time and effort and you'll make mistakes but you can learn with your child, rather than being the expert and having all your shit together.

Too many parents think they have to have it altogether. You don't.

At the airport in Calgary yesterday morning, when I was clearing US Customs, they never once checked my passport. All they did was take my picture. That kinda confused me a bit!

I mean, I had to show my passport when I was actually boarding the plane, but I would have thought that Customs would have checked it first.

(in case anyone's wondering: most major Canadian airports have US Customs facilities. So if you're flying from Canada into the US, you clear customs before you get on the plane. Linky )

That's ok. You're in the database now.

It reminded me of the scene in 2001 where Dr. Floyd clears customs on the space station by simply stating his name and intended destination. Implying that passports were no longer used, and voice confirmation was all that's necessary.

I must admit I'm in favor of this. Passports are physical objects, and can be lost or stolen. If that happens, you're up Shit Creek without a paddle. Especially if you're abroad and trying to get home.

I mean, of course there is the potential for abuse. I'm not denying that. I just think that any method of clearing international travel that reduces the risk of you being stranded abroad, deserves some serious attention.
