If I had to guess, they don't emphasize civics in school anymore. I remember my 8th grade Civics class, where we memorized the Preamble, the Gettysburg Address, and the 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' bit of the Declaration. Oh, and we learned that first you cast the votes and then you fucking count them. While the focus has been on the five battleground states, many other states are still counting as well; they just don't have an effect on the Presidential race because of the numbers.
Because they'd already done it back in 2000. Been there. Done that.

True. The last four years it's been more "But she won the popular vote!" and "Ditch the Electoral College!" Still whining though.
There was also some "Hey, electors, maybe don't vote the way of the district you represent in the Electoral College?" back in November 2016.
Then there were a few district will close results where they had to do recounts, at least one of which was contended for by Jill Stein on behalf of Hillary Clinton, something the Dems immediately rewarded her by calling her a Russian asset. Not to mention the despicable and outright anti-democratic way the Dems went after the Greens this year.
Yeah, I'm not really happy what the hatred of Trump turned some Democrats into.
I cringe every time I hear "nukyooler".
