Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

In many case, it may be true for several reasons. Language change. There may be words and phrases we wouldn't recognize or misinterpret. Also, writing styles change, especially cursive. IIRC, one of the movie nitpicks regarding Indiana Jones and the last crusade was that Hitler wouldn't have signed Indy's journal the way we saw in the movie as it was uncharacteristic of someone who learned cursive in late 19th Century...
....

I was surprised to see Hiter sign autographs in that movie, I thought it was more of an American thing, and maybe even a Hollywood one. So I looked it up and it turns out he did. There are even pictures of him doing that.

cursive? that was never taught at school in either germany or austria

otherwise the movie is correct; hitler outlawed kurrent - he had really bad marks in 'schönschrift' at school. schönschrift means sth like beautiful writing. there is not one signature of him where he doesn't use latin fonts.

... btw, kursiv in german is italics to you.

it's called deutsche schrift or wrongly sütterlin. there are sütterlin versions for both deutsche and lateinische schrift - i would have linked to wiki but that article is nonsense. ludwig sütterlin was charged with inventing more pupil friendly versions for both kurrent and latin fonts.

kurrent was also used in england. there are lots of royal navy documents. what made deutsche schrift unique was the implementation of a few ideas of johann heinrich pestalozzi (he was swiss of course)

Thinking about tomorrow night's D&D session. I've got a new to D&D player with social anxiety coming to the table in the role of an NPC so he can get his toes wet. I want to make sure he has a good time. It's a lot of pressure (to me) being somebody's first DM. If they don't enjoy it, then they may never play the game again, but if they do, then you've opened a door for them for all kinds of fun. Fortunately, the table is a really friendly one. All of my players are very quick to help and open to people who aren't rules familiar. I decided to start him off on what will probably be a pretty role play heavy night rather than loads of combat. He's playing a spy, so he'll get plenty of experience with proficiency rolls and how contested rolls work. And if he enjoys it, there's potential for it to be a recurring role.

Watching Friends, I just noticed that there is a Tin Box on the kitchen shelf with Yorkshire Tea on it. I didn’t know Americans drank tea, and I have the same metal box.

they don't drink coffee either - they do stuff they call coffee, though

I clicked on a random YouTube video reacting to the Star Wars D23 reel. Must've accidentally clicked on the progress bar and started the video a few minutes in. The guy in the video called it sacrilege that footage from the first six movies were edited in together with the third trilogy. Turned the video off.

Life's too short to deal with those kind of people.

Would you get a poster for a great movie if the poster itself was rather unimaginative?

I have some reward points to use up before they expire, and 27x40 movie posters are among the stuff I can get. However, the selection isn't very good.

The only good movie available, in my opinion, is this:

I like this poster, but the movie isn't very good:

Get the first one. That was a sweet little film. Never buy a poster for a film you didn't like. No one wants to be reminded of a crap movie that wasted two hours of their life.

I went to the local flea market. It was more like a collective garage sale, as far as I could tell by the items proposed. I didn't buy anything but it was a nice way to get to know the people in the vicinity. Plus it's always fun to see people haggle over the price of an object that the seller would rather give away for free than to take it back with him and the buyer will probably wonder in a couple of hours why he bought it in the first place.

When I was visiting a friend over in the US, they had put together a care package with loads of tea in:D (Can't say whether they'd saved it just for me though)
