Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

I’m thinking I can’t be the only one harbouring some sense of inadequacy in the face of all those celebrity Christmas programmes. The ones that show us how we can have the perfect Christmas in a few easy steps.

I think most people feel the same way, Butters. :)

I have decided to stay and spend Christmas at home with the people I share a house with. I don’t have the strength to travel 1500 kilometres to family living up north. I feel a bit guilty about it but I think it’s for the best.

given the political situation during almost the whole decade I'd suggest The Ten-sions

Well, the decade is not over yet. I'll wait till 2020 to characterize it. Something remarkable could happen next year, who knows?

Like the 1980's was the decade when the people were officially authorized to cross the Berlin wall but we had to wait nearly till the end of the decade to know that.

and after almost 4 decades we still haven't lived down the consequences. There's rather a lot of people on both sides who think the wall should be re-erected. The prob is that during the separation the ethical values on both sides began to develop into very different directions and once there is a rift you can mend it but never heal it completely. Many Eastern Germans belong to what we westerners call "the elbow society" - they don't ask, they demand; they squeeze themselves into the front of a queue, they not only look down on people worse off than themselves but actually (and often even literally) kick them, they act rudely and self-centered by our standards. And they have a most unfortunate right-wing tendency, politically.
This doesn't go for each and every easterner, of course, and particularly here on the BBS are a few who behave very differently from the above described. But the rude/selfish/primitive/aggressive ones are the majority, unfortunately. The social tensions caused by this very badly planned and overly hastily performed reunification will last for generations, I'm afraid.

In Russia, there are many who think the situation was better before Gorbachev decided to change everything.

Maybe the Propaganda Decade, the decade where public discourse was dictated by sensationalism and manipulative misinformation.

Pretty soon it will be a rough time for our livers... Our livers are fantastic organs that keep us from being poisoned, let's have a thought for their ordeal in the coming days.

I have let to break it to my liver that I'm about to go to New Orleans.

Reminds me of something that (comedian) Greg Giraldo once said about Hurricane Katrina. Imagine being blind-drunk and waking up in the middle of all that, like "What did I do? Was I near a dam?"

..I've just been informed by a few modding friends of mine that Aad Moerman passed away. That man was a true trek fan and has been a great inspiration to keep me going in making 3d designs for starships.
I know it's Christmas and supposed to be cheerful but I cannot help but feel anger and sorrow right now...

Sorry to hear that. I didn't know him but I am sorry his passing affects you so much.

Why at hotels do they put that half blanket thingy on top?

That kind of hard dark colored thing on the bottom 40% of the bed. I don’t get that. You just put it on the ground. It has no warming utility. But every hotel puts it there.

Does every hotel put a bed garnish on for no reason other than the psychology that it may increase perceived value of the room?

I imagine it’s used as protection from dirty shoes. People probably tend to lie down on the bed with their shoes on when they get into their rooms.

Really? That seems a disgusting habit to me. I would never do that.

Have you seen those news stories where they take a black light into hotel rooms? “Shoes on the bed” is probably one of the least disgusting things you should be worried about... :ack:

I have, and it was disconcerting! After reading such a story I always wash my hands after using the tv remote control.

Is it true? Not the aliens. Maybe not true, but accurate even. The astonishing claims of these ancient alien investigators. The alignments of ancient monuments, the similarities of geographically distant sites and their placement on the globe. How much is empirical fact, how much is wishful thinking, cherry picking, distortion?

This is on my mind, but only because I settled on a weird TV channel.
