Just watched I, Mudd yesterday.. good timing!
But regardless, it's not hypocritical to have an ideology, and then have a villain who stands for the opposite of it.
I like how you say that as if we should all have been privy to your thought process when you called it hypocritical. Maybe next time explain yourself when throwing out criticism like that.
I don't see how it's hypocritical for a villainous character to exhibit negative qualities without it compromising a diverse and egalitarian cast of protagonists, nor do I think they're required to be beholden to every detail of his previous depiction in TOS. It's like being mad that Ferengi are misogynist and thinking that erases the egalitarian stance of the Federation characters.
I'm still giving this show a chance and I've loved the various casting so far, especially the chance to see James Frain after Orphan Black again. I wasn't a fan of Mudd so seeing the character pop up in Discovery hit a nerve. It could be good I guess. I do like the actor so maybe he might put a positive spin on the character. I just wish it was a new character.

Just because it's a character we've already seen before doesn't mean there isn't a story to tell. Heck, Mudd only appeared in two episodes of TOS. We had Miles O'Brien on TNG as an occasional guest role, and then moved to DS9 where his story was MAJORLY fleshed out, and it was one of the best parts of that series. Revisiting characters is not something that is outside of Star Trek's purview; if anything it is very much within the established formula to writing successful storylines within the universe. O'Brien, Worf, Barclay, Troi have all had pretty significant storylines develop beyond their initial series. Heck, even Spock's storyline was highlighted on TNG. I'm sure there were TOS originalists that whined about it at the time, but TNG: "Unification" was one of the best stories Star Trek ever told.
The internet is going to be unbearable for the next 24 hours with all the April Fools'. Us sci-fan fans are juicy targets for such codswallop.

You know I was thinking this is 10 years before the original. Maybe they might have Mudd the saint and show how he turned to the life of crime and conning people. Maybe there is a little redemption for the character and I do like Wilson. I admit my reaction was overreactional because of my conceptions on the character but they could make him rather interesting in this series. Maybe there is a reason to be optimistic, at least a little.
So, "Better Call Mudd?" I can dig it.
I figure Mudd will play a similar role to how he always did - a recurring comedy character. Doubtless he'll show up for one episode this season with some sleaze up his sleeve, comedy occurs, and then he's off until next season. A treat when he's around, like Grand Nagus Zek, FCA Brunt, or Lwaxana Troi.

Given that in "Mudd's Women", he already has a sizeable record, we could see some of that happen here. I'm already picturing how Lorca will react to him, or maybe he'll be a headache for the Shenzhou!
