Drone36929 offers 10,000 Farkel points. Do you accept?

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

I don't mind the status updates - it's the games so many of my friends are playing that drive me up the wall. I don't care if your cow has gone missing, unless you're an actual, real-life farmer and you're depending on it for your livelihood.

If I were playing the games too, I might not mind so much, but I don't have the time to spend hours every week pretending to be a mafia don. Hell, I haven't found the time to update my Livejournal since May.

Okay, if every single one of my friends changed their statuses at the same time, it would take me hours to read them all, but fortunately, they don't.

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

Oh my... the games... THE GAMES! The constant updates for them drive me nuts. Most of my friends play Mafia Wars so for a while my news feed was crammed full of crap from it. And to be honest, and I hope I don't offend anyone with this, I would feel very uncomfortable playing a game where I am a member of the mafia out to kill people. That's one of the reasons why I hate video games. I just don't feel comfortable killing people, even if they are digital. It gives me the creeps so rather than having to sift through all the junk from it everyday I have hidden the feeds for it.

As for myself, I only play Farmtown but I won't let it post things to my news feed. I know that my friends could care less that I just reached a new level or that I won an award for buying the most crap in the store.

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

This thread reminds me of one of the many reasons why I have never signed up for Facebook.

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

You guys make me feel like my Mom because I don't have a clue what half of the stuff is you're talking about. I'm not on Facebook or any other networking site because I never saw the point and now I don't understand this modern world, anymore...

I initially joined Facebook because it was a really convenient way to keep friends/relatives up to date on what was going on with the family and esp. what was going on with my daughter.

For instance, I was able to post pictures of my daughter's first time in a swimming pool while we were still on vacation. My mother really got a kick out of seeing what we were up to in Orlando almost as it was happening.

^ Ditto. I have friends and family scattered all over the US, most of which I see maybe once a year. But Facebook helps keep us a little closer. For example, I wouldn't even know what my newest nephew looks like if it wasn't for his mom posting his pictures online. He will be a year old in two weeks and I would have missed so much if we didn't have a convenient way like this to share.

Drone36929 and his RL crush are now hardcore lovers.

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

My facebook updates today have so far consisted of drunken ramblings about all my teams kicking ass!

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

I figured out how to hide all the Mafia Wars/Farmville/Yoville/whatever games so I don't see them as status updates anymore.

And without it how would you know all of my opinions on Fringe? :p

QFT. I have siblings in London, so Facebook makes it easy to see what both of them are up to, plus other family and friends are all around the world.

That was me around 12 hours ago ... except for not being drunk. Looking forward to Friday night.

Blocking. I think I have 4 or 5 applications blocked at the moment, as I added another one last night, as there was 4 or 5 updates from this one application in a matter of 20 minutes.

Hiding things is very simple. You just hold your mouse over the update until the Hide button pops up, then click it and choose from the menu options. I didn't know you could do that for about a month after the last software update. Now I just hide what I don't want to see (including a certain friend who has some very odd views on politics and religion).

Facebook is very customizable but you have to know where to go to do it.

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

Just hide people who start to annoy you. That's what I do. I probably update mine 4-5 times a week though I hardly suffer from delusions of people "caring." Here's a couple examples:

STATUS UPDATE: http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaResources/PreparedSchoolRemarks/ - Anybody else think Obama's speech to students isn't as horrifying as some are making it out to be? The President is essentially saying "be cool, stay in school" and people are freaking out.

STATUS UPDATE: Did I actually enjoy a 60 degree walk to work this morning?!? *sings* "Oh Happy Day!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLY7yI1xV-M

STATUS UPDATE: Just spent the last hour and a half stuck on the red line! They unloaded the trains twice at Van Ness station so I decided to cab the rest of the way to put an end to the madness. Finally back at my place :)

I also enjoy reading statuses and commenting or "liking" the interesting ones-- particularly on my cell phone during my bus ride to the subway.

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

I don't use Face book, MySpace, or Twitter; I find it more than enough to barely use Live Journal. I guess I really don't want the rest of the world to know what I'm doing for the most part. My LJ entries are usually several months between one another.

Just in case anyone is interested I just took my shower and am now sitting here naked! :p

Re: Quick! Update your Facebook status! Someone might actually give a

I'll update my status one-two times per day. Occasionally, I'll use it to bitch, but I'll make sure to do it in the 1st person (Sean ~ This French homework is making my brain melt), or I'll have a funny quote ( Sean ~ "Illegitimacy is something we should talk about in terms of not having it"- Dan Quayle") or a satirical observation about my day. My current status is one like that (Sean~So, what did we learn today?: A good doctor is one who is willing to insert a Foley Catheter, and perform a rectal exam sight unseen.).

My friends all say they enjoy the humor I put in my statuses, so I figure I'm on the right track. I don;t think, or care that anyone else really cares, but if someone wants to comment on it and say it's funny, or strike up a conversation on a topic relating to it, cool.

Those notifications from those stupid games annoy me though. I've set my feed to hide most of those. I definitely liked Facebook before they changed it to make statuses indistinguishable from wall posts or anything else for that matter. :vulcan:

What does annoy the hell out of me though, is when my friends (mostly girls) add extra letters to words in their statuses, so that a simple thing like "Out, Text me!", turns into "Outtt. Texxxt meeee!". That bothers me. No idea why though.

When you see them in your update feed, just hover the mouse over them, and you should see a little box on the upper right portion of the update that says Hide. I think it gives you a few options on how much you're going to hide after that.

Thank you! I'd seen that "hide" feature before but had never clicked on it - it didn't jump out at me as being what I was looking for. I didn't want to inadvertantly hide legitimate posts from friends and then not be able to figure out how to reverse it. (Well, as a developer myself I would have just read the documentation, but sometimes I have trouble finding specific things in there as well...)
